I’m frustrated

Bad machine bindings for Software Licence (Twist 2.3)

A few months back Twist started throwing an error concerning activation. Specifically "bad machine bindings for software license". I tried deactivating the software in iLok, reactivating, reinstalling TwisT, reinstalling iLok/PACE. Nothing helps.

I have two crossgrade licenses from M-Audio purchases, none of them work now, even though it used to. If I de-activate the licence - it prompts for activation. Activating results in a "Successful activation" followed by the aforementioned error.

I'm on Windows 7 SP1 64-bit. Using Ableton Live 9 Suite (also in 64 bit mode)

I've sent Sonivox a support ticket, but that was 6 days ago and I've not had a reply from them.

  • Hello Vsevolod,

Thanks for the post. I'd like to help! Sorry to hear that no one has got back to you yet. Refer to the following article below. It details how to use the activation codes and links provided by the Upgrade Email Notification Utility.

The automated Upgrade Email Notification Utility can be used to retrieve any Promo Codes or Activation Codes associated with your email address.

Refer to this helpful article here regarding how to use your activation codes to activate your Twist software. Try this out and let me know how it goes.

  • Hi,
The notification utility came up with two serial numbers which I tried before. If I deactivate the software in iLok and perform activation within Twist as it states in the link you provided, it ultimately results in the same "Successful activation" followed by a dialog window stating "bad machine bindings for software license".

  • Just so you know Bill - I got s support ticket reply today, and they sent me a promo code for a new license for Wobble 2.3. I guess they thought that my original license was invalid (which it shouldn't be, as it was bundled with an AKAI MPK Mini I bought only a week ago), but nonetheless I uninstalled everything, deactivated my old wobble license in the ilok license manager, then reinstalled everything and activated my new license for wobble 2.3. Then I get the same error message as before - "Bad Machine Bindings" license error message.

So it is not the license - both are valid.

  • I have had the same problem with Twist 2.3 for months - hopefully support can help me now. They couldn't before. I'll let you know if they give me a solution. I'd like to buy their Premier pack, but won't until this is fixed.

  • Hi Everyone -

The “Bad Machine Bindings” error you’re experiencing is related to the iLok License Manager specifically. Machine bindings tie a license to a specific machine or user, and is used for digital software distribution. I have seen the following steps below resolve the issue. However, if your symptoms continue after this, you will need to get in touch with PACE AP, as they are the company that makes and distributes the iLok License Manager software. 1. First, deactivate your license in the iLok License Manager by using this helpful guide - Deactivating the Licenses on your Computer

    2. Uninstall both Wobble and the iLok License Manager, then perform a Ccleaner scan (if on Windows - this scan is not necessary for Mac.) You can download the software from that link. This is a registry cleaner that will get rid of any files that are creating conflicts; it’s more specific than your anti-virus software.

    a. Open CCLeaner
    b. Click Registry
    c. Click Scan for Issues
    d. Wait
    e. Fix Select Issues
    f. Click Yes to create a ‘backup’
    g. Click Save
    h. Click Fix All Selected Issues
    i. Run Steps C - E two or three more times until there are no issues found.
    j. This should have cleared out unnecessary files that may have been causing any conflicts.
    k. Reboot your computer
    l. Reinstall the software

    3. Install the latest version of the iLok License Manager from their website here, then Wobble. Perform any additional updates for both of these softwares, if available.

These steps should resolve the issue for you, but as stated above, you will need to get in touch with PACE AP if the issue persists since the error message is related to their software specifically. Their phone number is
408-377-9774, and they are based in San Jose, California.

    Hope this helps!

  • Thanks for the info Bill. I did all that you describe (as you emailed me this info a while back) but unfortunately it didn't resolve the issue for me. As calling Pace AP in the USA is not an option for me, I had no solution. All I ended up doing was moving the license to a machine that had a hardware ilok, and it works fine for a hardware authorization. The issue for me is present with Wobble when trying to do a pace machine-based license.

  • iLok just had me try a few steps to no avail:

"Did you check with the publisher that you have the latest version of their software?"

"Please check that your on-board Ethernet is enabled. Even if you don’t actually use an Ethernet cable to connect to the Internet, enable it anyway, because we use it as part of identifying one machine from another. To do that on Windows 10:
Settings -> Network and Internet -> Ethernet (on the left) -> Change Adapter Options
Look at “Ethernet" or “Local Area Connection” if it is Disabled, right-click and Enable it. It should then show the name of your network, or Cable Unplugged."

They had me send them some log files and my system info. We'll see what they say.

@justin - Thanks for the feedback regarding the hardware iLok. I just placed an order for the iLok hardware. It sucks that I have to pay $64 to try to fix the issue, but I have spent way too much time on this. I also figure if my PC ever dies, I'll have the licensing on the physical iLok to use. I have 37 machine-based activations with iLok that can disappear if the PC dies before I deauthorize them - so I guess that'll be how I justify the purchase.

I don't understand how a plugin can give a specific error message and neither Sonivox or iLok knows how to fix it.

I also ended up purchasing the Premier bundle anyway - the new key for Twist does not fix the issue and Wobble (did not own before) gets the same error - every other plugin in the bundle works fine - so I have verified that getting another activation key does not work.

Maybe Sonivox can give us a promo code toward another plugin purchase for our troubles.

Along with all of this, I have had to try to emulate the Twist sounds I used in songs with other VST instruments because of the issue - not really very fun, along with the time spent trying to fix the issue.

I'll let you know what iLok comes back with - and if the iLok hardware fixes the issue for me.

  • @Ki11Billy - no worries mate. Using the hardware ilok solved this issue for me, I hope that you have the same success.

I'm not a fan of ilok, but too many other plugin manufacturers still require it, so I guess we are stuck with it for now. The downside to using an ilok is that it is tied to that hardware, whereas with a machine activation you are able to just deactivate it if or when you need to.

Hope you have good luck with it! Let us know how you get on.
    Thanks.

  • So iLok support fixed my issue. They reset my licenses on their server, and then I had to do the following (along with reactivating my licenses on the PC). The steps below might be worth trying before contacting iLok support. Otherwise, I would contact them and refer to the steps from support below:

I have reset your account on the server. All licenses are back in your account. Please do the corresponding cleanup on your end before reactivating them.

    1) Quit iLok License Manager if currently running as well as any other binary that would be using our protection
    2) Go the Start
    3) In the search field type in “services” (without quotes)
    4) Choose “Services” from the search results
    5) Within the Services window, look for “PACE License Services”
    6) Right-click it and choose “Stop” from the pop-up menu
    7) Leaving the Services window open, open a Windows File Explorer window
    8) Navigate to the following location (this can be cut and pasted into the address bar):

    C:\ProgramData\PACE\Eden

    9) Delete all ”.sdb” files found there and then close the Windows File Explorer window
    10) Return back to the Services window
    11) Right-click “PACE License Services” and choose “Start” from the pop-up menu

The client database on Windows will be reset after completing this step. You can now reactivate your licenses.

  • I’m irritated.
I would say it is on Sonivox end. I've monitored the installation with Revo Uninstaller. If you changed the installer on Wobble and Twist where it doesn't try to install the Pace software again then that may solve some issues. Most of my "Paced" software allows for the Pace stuff not to be installed again.

Until this issue is solved I will warn others to stay away from Wobble and Twist. Seems like you are passing the buck to Pace.

  • Eventide software had the same issue. It was on their end not iLok. They updated their plugins instead of pointing fingers to Pace.
