Orchestral Companion Strings, picking up the end (release) of a MIDI note

Hi guys, I just downloaded Sonivox Orchestral Companion strings and for some reason when I try and record using it, it only picks up the very end of the midi note and plays that, like when I release the key. The MIDI note looks like it should be playing a long sustained note, but instead it just plays the release of the note, which sucks! I don't have this issue on any other plugins so I'm assuming its something to do directly with Orchestral Companion. I'm using Protools 11 which is fully compatable. Anyone have any suggestions? cheers Ben

  • Hello Ben,

I don't believe this had to do with the software. This sounds like it pertains your MIDI controller instead. Make sure that you have the very latest version of this software installed too - http://sonivoxmi.com/products/details....

    Hey Ben,

Have you solved this problem? I have been having the same issue with mine. I am running Pro Tools 12, so I don't know if they are working out kinks in that maybe? But you said you were using PT 11, so I'm wondering if this issue has been solved for you. When I am in "record-enabled" mode everything works just fine, but once I actually hit record the same thing happens as you describe. I have also tried on two different midi keyboards (which both function perfectly with other virtual instruments). Hopefully I can get this figured out, as the sounds I'm hearing are great... I'd just like to be able to record them

I am having this same problem but I found if you turn learn on it will play the midi scroll, this is extremely frustrating.

  • I had the same issue in Usine Hollyhock. The VST only played truncated notes on key release (note off). However, Cakewalk Sonar X3 Producer worked fine. Went back to Hollyhock, clicked on the 'learn' button to the right of the user interface keyboard (changing it from gray to blue). This fixed the problem in Hollyhock. In Sonar, it's just the opposite... 'learn' button off (gray), it works fine. 'learn' button on (blue), only plays on key release.

I just bought this and I think the strings sounds are great.

However when I use it to play midi in ProTools 12 nothing plays I stop playback and then the end of the note plays for half a second.

If I put the keyboard in learn mode it kinda works but notes stick.

Substitute the Sonnivox piano instrument and that works fine.

I can play live notes, but playback of recorded midi is not working correctly.

Seems like the midi is buggy.

Same thing here, i bought the Strings, Brass, Piano and "BigBang" and i'm having various issues with all of them including the same midi weirdness and some loading errors. Sent an email to tech support but never got a reply.

I'm using Mixcraft 8 and Orchestral Companion Strings works fine playing back recorded MIDI except when the DAW is in loop mode.

In that case, it gets to the end of the loop, then when it starts over, it plays just a bit of the note, as if someone had tapped a key.

In order to get it to play normally, all I need to do is stop and start the transport, but when I am recording multiple takes of something, overdubbing, whatever, it can be a pain in the a$$ to have my string section start playing backwards staccato, especially if I am recording vocals and am listening to it to help guide my pitch.

I've examined the MIDI stream with MIDI-OX and other utilities and can't see anything out of the ordinary when a loop restarts.

It sounds similar to what everyone else is describing. With all of the suggestions to phone tech support, I wonder if phone support has helped anyone solve the issue. It seems like it would be a nice thing to post the workaround here on the website.

    • With the latest build of Mixcraft, the problem has vanished as mysteriously as it appeared. Orchestral Companion Strings now once again behaves as it should in Mixcraft 8.
    • That's not surprising. Apparently some DAWs have variations in how they process MIDI events when the transport is looped. I had that problem in the last version of a different DAW and brought it to the attention of the developer. It appears to also be fixed on the newest release.
