I’m Frustrated!

After sync, duplicate birthdays appear in Outlook calendar!

FInally I found a way to successfully sync my HTC Hero with Outlook since the HTC Sync did not always work properly and messed up my outlook contacts - thanks Soocial!!

(OUTLOOK Soocial GMail HTC Hero/Android)

HOWEVER.... once I sync again - the Contacts in Outlook are fine, but birthday events are duplicated on my Outlook Calendar!

Looking at the "modified" date in the outlook contact, it appears as though some of the contacts are simply REPLACED when the sync occurs (albeit the info is the same)... When this happens Outlook thinks it is a NEW contact and puts the Birthday/Anniversary on the calendar again = duplicate entries.

Is there a way to overcome this that anyone is aware of?

I would even be happy if I could have a DIRECTIONAL sync - in which it only took info from Outlook and not try to update Outlook.

    Hey mitra0g,

that is a know issue. Really hard to solve. Our experience was actually that the birthday links would dissapear. We do not have a solution for this yet. But we are hoping our coming versions will provide a solution for this issue too.

Okay, this is a year-old issue, but I don't see any indication that it's been solved, and it is making my life miserable. Every week or so I go through the painstaking task of deleting all the duplicates (and most of the originals, since I don't want the birthdays of each of my 1700 contacts on my calendar), and I've tried doing it in Outlook, then separately on my Google Calendar, before syncing. And that seems to eliminate all the unwanted birthday calendar entries for a day or two. And when they come back, they seem to come back in multiples that match the number of my Outlook connections (three). My questions are A) are you still working to fix the inability of Soocial to recognize only one birthday for each contact, and B) does anyone know who to turn off the creation of Calendar events for birthdays, short of going into the individual contacts and deleting the value in the Birthday field? Any insight into how to handle this would be greatly appreciated.

    Rob,

we do detect duplicate birthdays and will remove them. Only if a contact would get merged with another contact and there would be two birthday fields with different data we would not know which one to delete. Do you have contacts in Soocial that have duplicate ones?

No, there don't seem to be duplicates on the Soocial website, nor do I have duplicate copies (knock on wood) in Outlook. I just have in Outlook three separate birthdays for certain contacts. And I delete the events from my calendar, and they keep replicating back, after syncing with Soocial.

    Rob,

I guess the question would be how to turn of this automatic adding of birthday events to Outlook. And apparently we are not the only ones bothered by this "feature" :-(

Does anyone know how to do this? I've have been searching for months or ways to purge my calendars of the birthdays of all these contacts, and have been manually deleting unwanted birthdays on all three of my Outlook calendars daily. I can't find in Outlook the means to switch off automatic birthday displays. I have isolated the problem to syncing with Soocial, however. I have witnessed the magical restoration of deleted birthday events on my calendar, as I'm in process of a Soocial sync. I can't delete the unwanted items on my calendar, but they only stay deleted until the next Soocial sync, then when all three of my Outlooks have synced, I frequently have three duplicates of the unwanted birthday events.

    PLEASE HELP!

Well, then you'd think that the tedious workaround for Microsoft's poorly designed software that won't let you turn off the birthday display on your calender -- manually deleting all the unwanted birthdays from my Contacts would solve my problem. But NOOOOOOO, ,,, The persistent bugs in your software that prevent my XP/Outlook 2003 computer from syncing reliably -- and for some reason make that machine the LORD OF ALL MY CONTACTS (changes I make on my other machines are overwritten in the rare instance of that machine syncing) -- causes those birthdays (and hundreds of duplicate Contacts) to reappear. I've spent countless hours and literally six months trying to get your software to work as advertised, but to know avail. I wish someone would respond to the many problem reports I've issued from that machine (email: rgarretson[at]starpower.net from that machine, not my gmail address that is associated with my PAID account). Because I can almost never get that machine to sync, I can't just clean up this mess once and for all by syncing each of my machines, running a dedup then syncing again, in rapid succession. On top of that, the strange bug that causes my XP/Outlook 2003 machines to overwrite more recent changes or to duplicate contacts that have been changed (I thought that was the case, until it finally completed a sync yesterday and seemed to duplicate every last one of my Contacts, not just all that had been changes since it's last successful sync weeks ago) makes it completely impossible to get one, correct set of my 1700+ Contacts properly synced and updated. I fear my only alternatives is to cut off my home computer (the XP/Outlook 2003 machine) from Soocial altogether or go back to Plaxo.

And "frustrated" is a massive understatement
