Support for Heart Rate Monitors + Footpod's

I'd love to see support added for recording our progress with HRM's and Footpod's. Support for Wahoo devices (http://www.wahoofitness.com/) and Runalyzer (http://www.runalyzer.com) would be a good start.

I agree with your stance on measuring time rather than distance for the course, but I would love to be able to get my workout data into Runkeeper's Health Graph so I can track my progress.

  • Hi Olly,

    They sound like cool products!

You should find that they'll all just work right now. You can start a Run Keeper run, then switch to Get Running and follow a workout. At the end, go back to Run Keeper and finish the workout off. That's it! Get Running also works happily in the background, so you can do it the other way around if you like :-)

We've decided that we like to keep Get Running pretty simple. There doesn't seem to be a lot to be gained from letting it hook up to lots of different sensors (that not a lot of users have) when they can be used anyway with multitasking. I think there are other areas where Get Running can be developed that will benefit people with getting started and keeping running.

    I hope that helps!

No, that doesn't work, because ANT+ sensors cannot be accessed when an application is backgrounded.

The Wahoo SDK is free from what I can tell.

It's a shame, as currently there doesn't seem to be on the market an app that does both coaching cues, AND sensor monitoring. Coming to this from cycling (and Strava...) having the data is really useful...

  • The iSmoothRun app, which can export your run data to Runkeeper, can be used in conjunction with Get Running, even in the background.

However, if you are running on a treadmill you will need a stride sensor (footpod) to record your distance since the accelerometer in the phone cannot work in the background. (AFAIK!)

I completed C25K with Get Running on a treadmill for almost every run. I tracked my progress successfully using iSmoothRun and the Wahoo Fitness Blue Heart Rate Monitor together with their ANT+ dongle and ANT+ Stride Sensor. This worked perfectly.

If you have an iPhone 4S you might want to wait for Wahoo Fitness' forthcoming Bluetooth Smart Stride Sensor to avoid having to buy their dongle as well. It is supposedly coming in January...

iSmoothRun is a great app in its own right, especially when it comes to taking your training beyond 5K. :)

    Thanks Olly, nice one!

Another thought for Nigel – leave Run Keeper, or your preferred tracking app of choice in the foreground. Get Running should work fine from the background fine.
