Hey guys!

Today we launched a new version of Springpad, available on the web, iPhone, iPad & Android. More details: http://springpad.com/blog/2012/04/the...

Check it out at: http://springpad.com

Unfortunately, there are a handful of issues that are impacting a number of you:

1. Notebook covers are showing 0 contents
This is a temporary issue with your accounts. Even though the cover shows zero, if you open the notebooks, you will see your data.

2. Attached notes & links are not showing up
Another temporary issues. All of your attached notes are safe & sound, don't worry! But, you should know that when they show up in the new Springpad, they will be comments.

Both of these issues are due to a huge job queue over on our servers. Once we get through the queue of upgrading everyone's accounts, these things will show up. I know it's frustrating, and I think you in advance for your patience. If you really can't wait to see your attached notes, send your username to devin@springpad.com & she'll help you out.

-----

While I have your attention, I thought I'd also address a common question we are hearing: "Where's All My Stuff?"

Yes, the navigation has changed a bit. Here's how to get to all of your stuff in Springpad:

Web: Click on My Notebooks, then you'll see

Here, I'd click on '1531 springs' to see all my stuff & '850 unfiled' to see the stuff that's not in a notebook.

iOS and Android: Tap on the 3 little lines in the top left corner to reveal the menu of notebooks, then scroll to the bottom to choose All My Stuff.

I've been trying Evernote to know its look and feel. I'm still more fond of SP (I know, comparison is not direct; they're not substitutes to each other).

I want to acknowledge that you guys in the SP team are making a huge effort trying to recover from this downfall, with a positive attitude as well, coping with angry / desperate / frustrated users. Hopefully we will be satisfied with the final product and we all learn a lot from this for the future.

It is great to see that manually added Recipes launch into the edit window when added, however when adding Cuisine, Course, Cook Time, Directions, Main Ingredient the window scroll bar does not activate and the page window is disabled, so if too many options are added the Recipe cannot be saved. The work around is to save and close the edit window and launch it again before actually editing the Recipe. This adds an extra step, instead of eliminating two.

An enhancement for Recipes, while you are fixing this issue, might be to have the Directions option already added, as what Recipe doesn`t come without directions.

In fact it might actually save time to have everything added and allow people to subtract the ones they don`t need. Though maybe a poll would help you decide which option use consistently. There may also be a couple additional options that are wanted but not available.

Duplications still appearing during edits, like previously listed for check lists. This time saw it with Recipes.

This edit issue appears to be related to screen size. I was using my 12" tablet PC with Google Chrome 18.0.1025.162 and had the described issues, but on a 21" monitor using the same version of Chrome, there is no issue.

Question! How am I supposed to set an alarm for a task(on the web app) without stating what TIME/Date I want it to go off?
I mean sure, I can set it to go off 20 minutes before- but before WHAT? There's no way to set a legitimate time!

This is the sort of stunning oversight that comes from them backtracking and retrofitting some productivity tools into this "social" interface. You are so right, the "Due" needs to be a date and TIME (which it currently isn't) in order for their reminder to work. I presume now, it would be 20 minutes before midnight.

It's April 22 and I've stopped counting how long I have been without attachments on my phone. The web portion seems to be fixed, not that I like it, but I see the attachments there. I work in areas that have no Internet access so I had to switch to Evernote so I can get my job done. If I have to rely on the competition just to do my daily tasks, why am I still waiting for Springpad?

Android app caches all notes to memory with no option for SD. But if I didn't mind filling up my phone with stuff, why wouldn't I just save all of my documents and notes in local memory? (verbum sap.: Evernote takes ~2mb of phone memory and Springpad takes ~20mb.) It seems Springpad has lost all commonsense.

Well, technically you ARE storing all your notes locally, but they are also syncronized to the web and available to other devices and the web (with the obvious benefits of having them available everywhere, and of course, stored safely elsewhere in case your phone is lost).

That being said, I agree with the general premise that even if the app is on the phone, there is no reason to have the cache of files reside anywhere but the SD Card.

Yes jdleiderman, I agree.

I tried to stick it out with SP because I liked the colors and user interface of the old SP, but the changes, bugs, and sheer length of the problems forced me out of the pocket. Evernote simple works and is not a facebook wanna be.

I wish the staff at SP good luck with their endeavors!

And so it goes

Hey Katin and Devin,

Just wanted to show you some love. I am loving the new Springpad and can totally see the potential. I can imagine how hard it must be to please all of the people all of the time - or even most of the people most of the time. Keep up the good work. I'm using Springpad much more than I ever did before.

Hi Katin, Devon,

A small issue on the Android app: The date picker for the reminder doesn't show the day numbers completely. I'm using an HTC One X. See screen shot.

What version of the Android app is this? (I ask because my screen looks nothing like this, and I am wondering if this is perhaps an issue with "Sense")

I have sense enabled on my triumph with CM7.2 and my date picker doesn't look like this either. So I don't think it would be sense.

Trouble syncing this was my fix.

Per email I sent to Devin who has been helping me but I could not wait anylonger.

Devin,
I closed springpad on my Android phone then I went into my settings and apps on my android phone and picked springpad then deleted the data (mind you this deletes any unsynced data). After that i opened springpad and it pulled all my information from your servers again and now it is syncing.

Not really a fix but I need to use springpad for daily life and could not wait any longer.

Sorry
Thank you
Carlos

Sorry, but I am tired of waiting for Springpad to fix the Android file access problem. Everything is back on Evernote and my Springpad account has been deleted. I suggest that after almost 3 weeks of waiting, others do the same.

I've had the same problem. Isn't it amazing that they could release a product and not even notice a total failure issue like this? Did anyone at sp even TRY using this product before they released it? Or did they just say "who cares what the users think?"

Trying to remain civil on Jeff's latest blog:

http://springpad.com/blog/2012/04/rec...

Jeff

I’m curious; I’ve continued to ask primarily for one thing. In case you’ve forgotten:

a summary list of all defects, de-enhancements and priorities and progress on all.

The reason I and others want the above is because it would assist us with the following:

1. Bored of encountering issues and wondering whether to report them or not

2. Don’t know if some of the things I’m encountering are meant to have been fixed in newer versions

3. Work out when to upgrade my mobile device. For example, I’ve still got a v. 2.0 app that seems to work and I’m not moving until I’m confident that the latest version works

4. Find out when features that were removed will be returned, if ever. For me and many off-line access is a necessity

5. Determine whether Springpad will continue to be good for GTD

6. Be convinced that we, the users, fit into your long-term strategy. I like some of the new stuff, but then I liked some of the old stuff that you chose to throw away

7. Decide whether I can trust Springpad with my data, my time and my peace of mind.

Alternatively, perhaps you can tell us why you cannot supply this list?

Thank you

James.

I finally relented on one of my phones and upgraded the Android client to the new SpringPad 3.0.X

I can't even begin with discussing the fuctionality yet, because I am too stunned on just how bad the new interface is on the phone.

Let's start with the hideous looking widget! It takes the Title bar color from the Theme and not the Accent color. I hope this is a bug and not more of this backward thinking that somehow makes sense to somebody there.

The icons! Holy cow! How freakin' awful! What the heck was wrong with the colorful Springpad icon rather than the stupid black and white impressionist rendition of the Springpad logo and images?

Now, lets go into the app. Yes, I am sure some of these have been mentioned, but I am going to go through them, because I have no way of knowing what is in the midst of being fixed, which ones are already allegedly fixed, and so on.

Notebooks - The amount of wasted space and the inability to read the title of the Notebook because you feel it is more important for the icons of those I am supposed to be sharing with is more important and the oversized (considering) space wasted to the lock and note count in simply baffling. This is the absolute opposite of "streamlining" and making things easier. It is "consistency" of user interface to the detriment of actual usability.

I get (I don't like, but I understand) using the thumbnail of an image if the item type is an image, but why would it be the icon, if the image is simply an attachment to a note? Once again, you seem to promote the idea of images over actual content, regardless of the situation. This flows nicely with what seems to be your theme of making this more Pinterest like with visual cues, but this is NOT Pinterest. Once again you seem to choose style, and pictures over actual functionality.

Go into a note and choose edit (Droid Bionic), and get a popup that says Edit and what looks like a window shrunk too small to see anything, and that is it. Only by pressing on a blank space on the note do I actually go into edit mode.

Now, I already don't like having "Comments" rather than being able to attach a note, and I don't like having the "Activity" wasting space there, but what is again bordering on "WTF" territory was the decision to put the "Activity" ABOVE the Comments pushing them down and off the screen.

Do, you really need to waste pixels on each side of a note in order to show a "background" that is barely visible, but wastes space that could otherwise be dedicated to the note?

Why do notes in gallery view continue to appear so large, even when there are no images? Yes, I know I can change it to List View, but then I get those stupid gray and white icons again.

I'm sure I will be back with more, but my eyes hurt from looking at the design choices, and my heart hurts from what you did to this once outstanding app.

Can anyone tell me how to use the little search bar at the top right of this screenshot? It looks like it is meant to be useful but its present functionality is baffling... or perhaps I'm missing something obvious? I had assumed it was an alternative search method but when you click in it, the keyboard pops up but there appears no way to activate the typed text - just an X which deletes contents but maintains focus in the control with the keyboard open. Is this a bug specific to my Android build (4.0.3) or a yet to be implemented tool?

Jay, that's why I'll only upgrade from v2 on my nook when they hold a shotgun to my head. It's impossible to believe that every problem you describe is a non-issue on my current nook version. Color coding, pretty (user selected) background, full notebook titles, smal thumbs for notebooks, the good points go on and on. Unfortunately, the bad points of v3 also seem to go on and on.

For the record, a reboot seems to have fixed the issue with when you select the Edit Button (either that or it is a coincidence... but I don't believe in those), now I get "Edit Title or Edit Text" I will get some screengrabs for the other issues and send them to you, though I am not sure what about them would be "device specific"

@Peter... That is why I only upgraded one phone so far and left the other as well as my Tablet alone. But since I had the luxury of using multiple devices, it logical to sacrifice one to the cause to find out the issues that need to be fixed.

@Peter...exactly why I have held out on upgrading my iPhone & iPad...especially hearing that the fixes that are "in the pipe" for those devices are weeks out. Unfortunately, whatever Springpad did removed the attached notes as well as a few other things from v2 on my devices. It's the lesser of two evils, though. I'm limping along looking at the webapp and some things are still working okay on the mobile devices. As this goes past two weeks, I am really wondering if I can stick it out with Springpad. I mean, when the app that is supposed to make your life easier ends up consuming so much of your time and holds your data hostage in some instances, I gotta wonder why I'm sticking around. The old version was definitely pretty and the new has some good features, but ..... [sigh]

@April, Yep. March was probably the most life-changing month I've ever had, and this update on top of it has not made my life easier.

I've basically dealt by starting to use Nirvana for some of my heavier-use daily stuff, and to create new tasks and projects that I just want to get out of my head, but I've left a lot of info in Springpad for now, and I've kept hanging around here. Just in case... And, well, because right at the moment I don't have time to fully investigate all the other options and move everything. But I don't really have the time or patience right now to play with Springpad and report bugs, either. Sigh, indeed. :-/

@Katin, are all the updates available via the App store for iOS devices?

I am just scared to upgrade until I know that I can get the latest bug fixes. For what I need to do "on the go" the v2 is still working mostly for me and I'm scared to get into a situation where I upgrade and find bugs in v3.01 (or whatever) and am in a worse situation and have to wait another week for Apple to approve v3.02 (an example...not sure which version you are on).

Not to rub salt in the wound, but this is where the list James keeps asking for would come in handy...I could see which update fixed which bug & which issues are still outstanding to decide if I should upgrade the app on my phone yet.

Sorry Katin, but when are you going to supply the much asked for list?

I could ask a member of my team to go through all the feedback given and would expect them to make a fair stab of producing it by the end of the day. They might miss a few things but they'd get it done.

Too many excuses being given at the moment. Some simple, honest answers would be good.

Heh. It IS a ton of work, but unfortunately that's the whole point -- none of us have access to those 800+ replies, including James' employees. So we can't really help.

Is Springpad paying Getsatisfaction for this forum? You've said there's nothing you can do about the "15 most recent replies" issue (aside from coming out with this full list), but can't you call them, complain, something? I assume you're a client of theirs in some sense, and this has created pretty serious communication problems.

Since weeks, Springpad has been broken and unusable and I don't trust it. It seem to have lost bits of information. By example, the date of creation of "comments" doesn't feel right.

There is no magic in the world to fix the mess in one or two days more.

Why not revert to old Springpad while you guys, with time and love develop Springpad 4 and let version 3 be a bad memory.

By the way, they are not "comments". They are notes attached to another note.

Wanted to report a bug in the 3.0.5 version of the Android App. When adding a contact manually in Springpad, it doesn't provide the same options available as on the web version. The web shows things like E-mail address, Address, Phone etc. As you would expect. The Android app shows the image below. Please also note the two available (and perhaps inappropriate?) flagging options on this Contact. I'm not sure what other option the Android app appears to be confusing a contact with, but all I can edit is the "title". No other fields.
