Search Function Doesn't Include Bodies of Notes

  • Problem

I've found the search function lacking with the update. I seem to remember that the search function would look through even the body of my notes (which was superb!), but now I can't find things unless they are in the subject. I save a lot of ideas on Springpad that I copy and paste over from email list-servs, so it would be helpful if the search function would include the body of notes, since many times ideas are hidden under different headings. Thanks!

Hey There - The mobile and web apps should all search title, tags and the body of the notes. Right now they do not search comments. Which version of the app are you using?

Why can't I search in my own notebooks? I want to find a recipe, and have over 200 recipes stored so just browsing for one is time-consuming, yet the search bar on Springpad only has the option to Search the web, not search my own items! I don't want to find other people's recipes, I want to find the one I saved for later so I can make it.

it's working now, although it wasn't before. thank you!

@ksharra - when you're at the main "My Notebooks" view, the search bar at the top right will look through your stuff. When you're inside one of your notebooks, the search bar for your stuff moves to the left side.

I search my stuff for a particular search term ("Belvedere", and many others), knowing I have a web clip with that word in the title, as well as in the text, and it refuses to find it. It does find it on my Android app, but not on the web app (Chrome on Win7 64 bit). I've tried reinstalling the extension (from where this problem also presents itself) but it's made no difference. When I search for a different word on that same note, it will find it. If I make a quick note with the same text, it will also find it with the original search term. What's going on?

Hi Bianca - What is your username? Is this only happening with that one note?

My username is bianca.arnold. It is happening with several notes. If you look at my Europe 2012 notebook and choose the tag Weimar, you will see quite a few notes there. The note title always starts with "Kulturstadt Weimar - " and then eg Belvedere or Tiefurt etc. If I search on the first word after the hyphen or a combination of words starting with the first word after the hyphen - it doesn't find it and tells me there's nothing there. It only seems to apply to that particular website but it's quite perplexing.

Bianca - We are looking into this. It appears that the problem you are having it intermittent and not for all notes. I am trying to determine what specifically the instance is when it does not search certain notes in the body. I will update as soon as I have more information.

How do I search the content of my notes? I tried using the "search my stuff" box, but it only seems to search the title of the note.

Any progress on this one? To be able to search the text in the body should be one of the most fundamental functions, and if it's not fixed soon I'll switch back to evernote (which I don't want to).

I agree. I'm just getting started to migrate from evernote and thought I'd try the search function. When it failed, I stopped until this gets resolved. If there's a solution, I'd be interested.

@inge - You should be able to search body of notes right now. We do have intermittent cases where certain search terms are not returning results. If you are experiencing this, please send your username, notebook name, and search terms that do not return results to: devin@springpad.com. Thanks!

The search still doesn't work for the body of bookmarks. Should this work, or is still in progress?

Just following up that I tested searching the body of bookmarks on both iOS (3.0.9) and the web, and neither are working. The app also doesn't seem to index longer notes (a couple of printed pages) for search. This is the biggest issue holding me back from full adoption of SpringPad in favor of competing products. It's such a great product otherwise, but I *really* need search to work to use this as a note taking (knowledge offloading, really) application.

@cnc right now the web is not returning results for the body of bookmarks. iOS should be. Please send me your username, and the name of a bookmark you cannot search for.

still a problem on Win 7 and android, sometimes no results, sometimes partial.

On PC, search usually takes me to "let's get started".

My copy and pasted items are not searchable. I have copied parts of e-mails and turned them into note. When I search for words Springpad doesn't find them. I have two notes both containing the word 'pizza' one note I typed it the other was a copy and paste - the only one that can be found is the one that I have typed in. Why is this?

I'm using Windows Vista running Chrome Version 22.0.1229.79 m

Thanks, Stan

I have the same problem, it seems only the first 500 characters are indexed, the remainig words in the body are ignored.
This is a big problem for me.

I tried "Search & Do" with 5-6 different words that I can see in my notes and it only returned results for 2 of the words. So its not very dependable

As far as I know, the new version of Springpad completely solved this issue.
