I’m frustrated

Springpad clipper feedback

The clipper is a lot easier to use especially the image selection. But it got rid of some essential features.

I can no longer pick more than one notebook. For example, I did a search on web hosts and the sites I am clipping need to go into my review and/or social notebooks.

What happened to the tab suggestions!? How can I tell if I already made a tab called photographers or photographer? This helped me keep the tabs to a reasonable level. I could even catch accidental mistyped ones.

I picked Sringpad to stay organized especially for the bookmarking. This will make it a lot harder to stay organized. I have 349 bookmarks since only March 18, 2011. This loss could be a deal breaker.

Please tell me if these features will come back.

Frustrated but hopeful, Lorekeeper

I don't get it. I actually used the clipper much more than the the extension. It provided a host of features: We could include more than one picture as attachments, we could add it to multiple notebooks, tag suggestions, edit the content using a proper editor, include additional notes.

The only chagnes that I can see that are positive are the fact that it looks prettier, and automatically picks up some text from the page.

Why change a perfectly good thing? it doesn't make any sense to me.

The missing tag suggestion is probably the biggest issue. as shanabelle indicated, how are we supposed to know if our tags are Photo, photo, photos, pic, pics
    • view 1 more comment
    • Yes I did notice that. However, it converts the text into plain text from its previous html version (there is a warning when you try to edit). Also the editor is then just a plain text editor, which means I can't even turn section bold. I often edited my boookmarks, removing certain sectios, marking sections as bold to highlight, removing social links that get included etc.

I'm sure you can see why imo, the new clipper is a major downgrade of the product.
    • Got it, thanks for the details!

We made the changes to the clipper mostly to streamline the clipping process - now you can save things from one screen with fewer steps. (plus it should be noticeably faster to load)

But, we hear your complaints & will be sure to address them soon.

  • Yes, it is more streamlined, in the way that you can clip a bookmark using 1 step.
However, I believe most people use springpad for more than just simply bookmarking a link. That is a basic functionality that every browser does very well.
The main advantage from springpad is that I can (could) actually include the content of the site, any images I wanted, easily tag the item, assign it to notebooks etc.

In fact because of the 'streamlining' I now have to save the bookmark, hope that I have assigned the right bookmarks, then go to springpad, adjust missing/wrong tags, edit the item properly using the editor within springpad. This is the opposite of streamlining!
Also the new clipper doesn't pick up all of the images (e.g. try a youtube link)

Some real improvements to the clipper, would be automatic tag suggestions based on site content, previous tags associated with domain, assigned notebooks etc. Better image/thumbnail management (i.e. use a custom source link to assign a thumbnail). Use a text engine, like Readitlater or instapaper to automatically retrieve text and images from articles.

I really want to see the person that thinks this change is an improvement.

Overall, I am happy with the new clipper for recipes so far (haven't tried it for other things yet), it's faster to load and save, it seems to be accurate more often (still some problems), and I like how you can choose to pop-out the window.

But, I agree with the others, there are some smaller things I miss:

    1. I'd like to be able to toggle the public / private from the clipper screen

    2. I'd like to be able to add notes and pictures from the page directly from the clipper like before

    3. Like everyone else, I'd like to be able to also choose from a list of tags, that's an important feature for not having to many similar tags

    4. I'd like to be able to add to multiple notebooks, I don't do this often so it's not super important to me, but it's useful sometimes

    5. Also not as important but still nice to have, on recipes, and I'm assuming a similar issue would come up on other types of entries like books, businesses, I'd want to choose to enter more fields like I used to (so I could add cook time or cuisine if I wanted, even though it doesn't need to show up by default).

Like I said, happy with the progress, hope that some of these features make it back in soon without sacrificing the speed you have now.

I don't understand why the functionality of the web clipper was reduced.

The pop up tags were helpful, as I don't always remember the exact format of a tag used (wall vs walls, onion vs onions, etc). Now that is gone and I am constantly guessing what my previous tags were.

The ability to add a clip to multiple notebooks is now gone- why?

The ability to choose public or private at the getgo is also gone. Why?

You can no longer add notes upfront- why?

Sure, it looks nicer visually, but you have turned it in to complete garbage. It's now as useless as the firefox extension.

  • Agree with all of this. It also doesn't tell you if you've already bookmarked a page! Which is annoying because it means I eitehr end up with duplicates, or have to go edit the original in the main web app, instead of being able to add media, additional tags, notebooks, etc. within the web clipper.

  • exactly. I didn't use the FF extension at all because the features of the clipper were so much better. Now what?

I admit that I am mostly talking (ranting) about saving regular bookmarks to springpad, which in my case msotly involves, articles, research, blog posts etc.

I don't know how if the features for the other types have improved or how they have changed.

    my mood is improving :)

  • I’m undecided.
When I first "sprang" something today I noticed & liked the change in the clipper, but on second glance, I am missing some features I used regularly...1)the ability to add Media (a picture to go along w/ my bookmark or recipe, etc.) and 2)the ability to add a Note right there.

What's going on with the new clipper?

Thanks for merging my comment...I am going through reading the comments.

I'm really frustrated as recently I started using the option to save a bookmark as a Task so that I could do an action & have the bookmark attached (for example Order tickets to this football game or concert & here is the link to the order website). That is no longer available.

Maybe it's just me, but the clipper was FINE. I haven't seen many complaints on it at all. Why isn't Springpad addressing functionality like "unchecking all items on a checklist" or "sorting tags alphabetically" or other such topics that people have been complaining about for a year? Instead you are taking away functionality from us to make make something prettier or more streamlined. As kschaefers pointed out, this is the opposite of "streamlining."

I could do all sorts of things like adding multiple media, multiple notebooks & tags, adding notes, etc. without having to actually go into Springpad to further edit my item.

I hate to say it, but this "improvement" sucks.

  • My primary work flow involves adding notes using a highlighted piece of content. I then add my notebooks (sometime multiple), and all my tags (depending on the auto suggest), etc. The new clipper completely breaks my work flow.

May I suggest add the old clipper back as an option until the new clipper is improved? In no way meaning to be snarky, but depending on how long the delay at restoring these features takes, I may need to switch back to Evernote as my primary tool.

  • Hey guys - we are looking at making at least some of the improvements discussed next week. If it will take longer than that, we'll make the old clipper available to you for a while longer.
    • Thank you Katin! I DO appreciate that we can post feedback on these forums and have direct contact w/ you guys at Springpad! Thank you for listening!

    • Any updates or are we to assume that the two features that were added back are sufficient for y'all to not bring back the old clipper and just leave it at that?

I'm back to not understanding Springpad's logic. I understand all about the code bloat and developers being available to work on a "streamlined" clipper, even if among all the requests, it wasn't something for which was asked.

But I'm not understanding the alienation of all the Springpad users here. Why not just go back to the old clipper until you have a better "improved" clipper? Obviously the new clipper is sorely lacking. It might be faster, but if I have to do two extra steps AND go into Springpad to do what I could once do via the clipper, a few extra seconds doesn't bother me. AND the feature I used the most recently (assigning a Task from the clipper) is nowhere to be found even in Springpad. Once I clip something, there is no changing to another item type, as you know.

  • I think the new clipper doesn't jive well with pop up block settings. Just tried to spring http://europa.eu/legislation_summarie... from Chrome on Win 7 and I notice a brief alert that a pop up was blocked before my browser gets redirected to http://springpadit.com/public/clipper... with an eventual error that connection with the page was lost.

I also echo the above concerns as to losing some of the earlier functions.

Are the recipe features going to come back? (course, cuisine, main ingredient, time). If I'm going to have to migrate elsewhere, I'd like to get started. Unfortunately, doubling the time to save recipes is pretty much a deal breaker, since that's 99% of what I do.

This is much better! thanks a lot.
The picture detection engine seems to be worse. Also I really liked the old feature of adding multiple images to my bookmarks.
Lastly the text editor is still simply plain text which destroy all of the formatting.

    Cheers
    • view 1 more comment
    • It's still an issue for me because I tend to clip whole articles into my bookmarks. As an example, try highlighting any article from the NY Times website and then clipping it. You will see that by highlighting the text, you automatically highlight the social links, related articles and other things you do not want. all of this gets included in the clipping, which makes it look really messy. When you try to edit, you lose all of the formatting including the pictures etc. The old clipper gave me a quick way to edit the content down to the important bits and I could even include some personal notes prior to the actual article.
    • Ok, I get it now. Thanks!

I still don't get it...why is Springpad updating something that no one was asking for & we were all fine with?

    • Corrie - We are going to make update for recipe users, yes. But, I can't promise anything on timing. We are working on some major improvements to Springpad for the coming months & the developers are mostly busy with those changes. Sorry I can't be more exact, but I do want to be honest with you.

As for a recipe-specific clipper it would be for you to use on any site & it would always assume that you're trying to save a clipper. So, in most cases you would save the extra step of choosing the recipe type when you clip.
    • @Katin: I appreciate it, and I'll start my hunt for something that works as well for me as springpad used to. I'm sad to go, but this is something I use a lot, and it takes 2-3 times as long as it used to.

I really do appreciate how much faster the new clipper is, but there are still several features missing (or added) that I find a problem:

    - can't create a task/event/reminder
    - can't add media or notes
    - can't EDIT the title, etc. without opening the whole thing in my Springpad! It is really super annoying and inefficient to have to save, then go to Springpad and make edits, add notes, etc.

Also, I hate - SO MUCH - that when I tell it to save, then it gives me ANOTHER damn popup asking me if I want to edit it in Springpad or wait 5 seconds for it to close. NO! Just, please, go away once I save. for people who want to edit in Springpad, how about putting that option right there on the main clipper, instead of adding this extra useless step?

I have to agree with the others when they say that this new Clipper has increased the time it takes to clip something. The new Clipper is making a two-step process (add via Clipper, then modify content inside Springpad) out of what used to take one step (add & edit inside Clipper). I still love Springpad, but I would like the following functions reinstated into the Clipper in addition to what others have said:

    - for clipping recipes, adding/editing non-ingredient and direction fields; i.e. yield, cook time
    - selecting text while the clipper is open

I would also like to request that the clipper scroll with the page.

    Thanks!

  • I’m sad
I'm adding my voice to the chorus here too. Please, please add back the "save as note" AND "add note" feature to either or both the clipper and the extension!! I mainly use Springpad to save clippings & notes that are not bookmarks and don't fall into any of your pre-given categories like recipes, products, movies, etc, and so I really have to be able to clip things as note, edit the title, edit the body (i.e., take out extraneous objects/links, add in other relevant info), and also add a supplementary note to what I clip all in the extension/clipper. I know the clipper gives you the option of going to the clipped note after clipping it, and I really tried to live with it for a while, but it's really cumbersome because in the end, I have to clip, open springpad/note, go back and forth between tabs/windows to edit the note, and repeat this many many times over and over again (i clip multiple things like this in one sitting), when it used to be so easy and quick. i also second t_chika's idea of a clipper that scrolls with the page, but that would be an added bonus - the icing on the cake. Otherwise, there's a lot to like about the clipper & extension, and I do appreciate the "smart" features, along with the multiple notebook and auto-complete tag features you added back. Please, please consider adding just a few more things back!

    Thanks!

  • I’m extremely aggravated.
Give me a break Springpad...trying to use the new clipper to clip a recipe.
    1. It DOES capture the ingredients and directions better than the old clipper.
    BUT...
    2. No option to add any notes (as previously stated).
    3. No option to edit the servings.
    4. Does not always capture the URL in case I need to go back to the source.
    5. Cannot add it to the notebook I want since my "Recipes" notebook is at the bottom of my list of notebooks & the dropdown list will NOT scroll to pick it even if I scroll the page.
    6. The real kicker...after I spring it, and I click "View in Springpad" since I need to add/edit things I can't with the clipper, it pulls up All My Stuff and the recipe isn't even there. I have to go out of All My Stuff and go back in before I see it. Thanks for adding about 4 more steps that I didn't need to do w/ the original clipper!

And what is the answer? Are any of the other features of the orignal clipper going to be added back?

(Except that the Clipper extension in Firefox doesn't let me copy and paste text into the body of the note, which is a separate but equally inconvenient issue.)

    • Hi, I am new to Springpad and am still evaluating it against Pinterest and Evernote as the tool of choice in our home.

Couple of key things though that I am trying tofind a silution to.

      1. The web clipper does not have the capabiity to clip the whole page in the format seem on the web. Evernote can do this, with some minor formatting glitches and DevonThink does it brilliantly, retaining all linsk etc as well and has no formatting issues.

      2. Grabbing screen slections is an issue when Springpad has no native Mac app to switch between it and Safari for clipping.

Do you have plans to improve the clipping capabilities and to develop a desktop app?

      Thx
