Books fail to download with ios4?

  • Problem
  • Updated 4 years ago
I have an phone 3GS, and I recently upgraded to the ios4. I'm also on the latest iTunes release. But now, whenever I try to sync books to Stanza over wifi, it works for a second, then says:

Failed to download and import "[book title]": Failed writing downloaded book date to: /private/var/mobile/Applications/[series of numbers divided by hyphens]/tmp/Downloads/download-34

The download icon then turns into a red arrow. And when I tried emailing an epub format book to Stanza, I got the same error. My iPod Touch, which is not able to upgrade to ios4, still works just fine with Stanza. It's only my upgraded iPhone that gives me this error.

I had had this problem, too. Shutting my Ipod Touch all the way down and re-starting made the problem disappear. I no longer have the problem.

This also fixed the issue sync'ing through iTunes for me as well. Using iPhone 4 and iOS4.

I am having this issue as well. When I attempt to download from a pre-loaded site (which it wasn't recognizing at first) I keep getting the "Download Failed" error message. I have iPhone 3GS with IOS4

I tried the fix above, restarting the phone, and it allowed the files to download. I have restarted the phone several times before after downloading '04 and Stanza, but this was the first time attempting to download files into stanza since those two changes.

And on top of it all, this site broke. Fantastic.

Same problem here. Restarting my phone temporarily solves the problem, but it invariably shows up again within a day or so. Frustrating as hell.

I'm getting the same problem...
I usually transfer books directly between my Mac and my iPodtouch (3rd gen iph4.0)...But I already try uploading them to Box.net and is the same...
I try through iTunes...but nothing happens..I add the books into the Library but they are not sync into my iPod... :(

Any Idea?...

...when you say..."Shutting my Ipod Touch all the way down and re-starting..." what are you talking about?...Go back to original settings? How do I do that?.....Does it mean that I'm going to loose all my previously downloaded books?

I really LOVE this application...please...any help will be appreciated..
:)

Just means to power it off and turn it back on. No need to adjust settings

I already followed the suggestion...and it seems to work...
I tried the different alternatives to transfer a book...and they all worked..

Hope it keeps that way...
thanks everyone!!!

I followed the suggestion and it worked for me as well. I really like Stanza, and I use it for ebooks that I don't purchase from Amazon for my Kindle. I hope that someone will be able to find a permanent solution soon...

Yes, restarting the phone will make it go away temporarily, but it always comes back.

I have the same problem with an iPhone 3GS and iOS4- restarting doesn't make it go away. Curiously, .epub format books transfer through iTunes to the iPhone, but no other format. Or if the book transfers, it cannot be read except for the cover image. Before iOS4 other formats transferred as well (as the documentation says they are supposed to)

Same problem here, Stanza 3.0.3 and trying to download anything from feedbooks results in error. Also, book names are no longer displayed, only numbers which is very annoying. Seems this problem has been around a while without any real solution. I'll keep looking for a while linger but this really is a show-stopper for me. If there is no fix, I'll have to find another app to use :( I've loved using stanza, but not enough to reboot my iphone constantly.

Just to let you know that I haven't found any "permanent" solution yet...
It's incredible that my first post was EIGHT months ago...and still the only thing that have worked for me is "total power-off"... :(
So..I've change my patterns...I try to upload some books at a time instead of one by one (any given day)...just to avoid multiple "reset" every week
It's terrible that we all are still waiting...and nothing...

You do not need to totally power off. Just double click the home button to bring up the "running programs screen" then tap and hold on the Stanza icon to give you a red (-) to close the program. Ebooks should again download to your IOS 4 device just fine the next time you start Stanza.

Picture of "running programs ready to be closed" below.

I've ran into a few different programs on IOS 4 that exhibit this behavior, not just Stanza. It seems when multi-tasking, IOS 4 doesn't shut down apps, it just "pauses" them. The problem is when the app starts up again, it still has old settings in it's memory and is not flushing them when it becomes active after a "pause". That's why closing the app completely and restarting it makes everyone work fine again.
