Getting 'Unreadable Book Format' on most books since upgrade.

  • Question
  • Updated 3 years ago
I recently upgraded a number of apps on my ipod touch and found that stanza had also been upgraded, but when I tried to read my books, most of them come up with a screen saying 'Unreadable book format'. Is this a bug or some such? If so it must have come in with the upgrade. How can I get my books working again?

That's odd. The books still show up OK in your library? Do you know what kind of format the books were originally in?

Thank you for answering.
Yes, the books are still in the library. A lot of the books were from feedbooks, but some were bought from the stanza catalogue

I'm having the same problem, and all of my books were downloaded through the Stanza online catalogue.

If you download a new book from one of the Get Books catalogs, does this error still occur?

Similar problem here, since I updated to Stanza 3.0 a week or so ago. 3.0.1 made no difference.

Now, when I open a book, the whole screen whites out, and it stays that way, all I can do is go back to the launcher. Then I open Stanza again, which whites out the screen again, but now when I click on it, some books will finally appear, and others will give the 'Unreadable Book Format' message.

When a book does appears, I get a brief glimpse of the previous book I was reading, probably the X.splash image Stanza saves.

I have some 180 books, all in ePub format, from Stanza, Feedbooks and Calibre (HTML -> ePub).

Seems the unreadable error only happens with pre-update books for me; at least, the dozen or so books I've added since updating are readable. But some of my old books are also readable... so who knows.

The white freeze is quite annoying, so in the mean time I'd like to downgrade Stanza to a previous version. How would I go about that?

More important, however, I'd like to backup and export to a human readable format all my notes. Please tell me there's a script to dump the SQLilte DB. :P

Seems Stanza 3 has quite a load of problems, some much more severe than these, judging by the comments in the release note and the forums. Have you contemplated pulling it back? Many users could thank you for saving them the hassle. I know I would have. ;)

Cheers.

I was able to downgrade with an old 1.9 IPA I had on a backup. Since I'm jailbroken and I don't use iTunes, I installed it with AppCake, but I imagine you can add it to iTunes, though I don't know if it will let you downgrade without removing Stanza v3 from your handheld (deleting your library in the process...). With AppCake, I could downgrade without removing v3.

I was able to find some v2.x IPAs Googling, but I didn't try them since I solved this problem. If you have backups in iTunes, you can check if you've an old Stanza in /iTunes Media/Mobile Applications/Stanza.ipa.

Note however that downgrading will most probably force you to reinstall your library anyway, since I expect the database changed in v3, and Stanza v2 wouldn't recognize it now that it was updated to v3... so you're better off removing and reinstalling v3, and rea-dding your collection with Calibre if you've this error on many books; if it only affects a few, you could also consider re-importing only those, and ignoring the faulty duplicates in your book list.

Same problem here - just updated and all (that I checked) of my epub books (500+) are showing up as unreadable. When I try to delete one of these from my ipod touch (I was going to try to download it again) Stanza hangs and eventually dumps my out of the app.

Suggestions?

I can confirm Stanza crashes on trying to delete the "unreadable format" books. Some of my recently downloaded books are affected now. You can still download them again though; so far the second copy has been readable.

I tried downgrading to a Stanza.ipa v1.9.1 from an old iTunes backup, but the database file has a different path, and probably structure, so my library appeared empty.

I went back to 3.0.1, and it re-added all my recently downloaded books to my library, *except* the ones that got the unreadable error, so I got two copies of the others. But I can delete those normally.

Removing Stanza entirely and reinstalling didn't fix the white screen freeze. No idea if that would prevent the unreadable error, but apparently it did help some people. So if you don't mind having to add your collection again, and losing comments and markers, you may want to try deleting and reinstalling. I *do* mind, so I'll keep on waiting for a fix with duplicated books and white freezes... unless iBook wins me over. Yeah. Right. ;)

As Stanza would crash everytime I tried to delete a book it now said was "unreadable format" So in the end i used WINSCP and logged into the folders of stanza on my iphone and finally found it under ---/private/var/mobile/Applications/965FB2B6-87FE-4984-B264-B397A4D8AEBE

found all the folders (which are not named like the books, instead numbered) deleted them all and started adding books and organising using CALIBRE

The application directory is generated randomly every time you install Stanza. You can use the wonderful SBSettings to quickly find it (go to more > App folders). iFiles will also display the application name when you browse into 'mobile/Applications'.

Once you get rid of your current collection (by deleting, or moving 'Documents/.Stanza'), you should be able to copy all your books to 'Documents' (over WinSCP or even USB --moving them from 'mobile/Media' to the right place afterwards) and Stanza will recognize them as "just downloaded" the next time you run it ('Documents' is where Stanza downloads books itself --and not 'Documents/Downloads'; go figure). This is a more reliable way to copy files than doing so from the Calibre server, you can resume easily if the process is interrupted, and you will avoid a lot of "Show me more" clicks, specially with big collections. ;)

I'm not sure if you can modify other application's directory with iFiles on a jailed phone, but it's worth a try if you're reinstalling.

one more thing ...
the path (from above, see my last post)

/var/mobile/Applications/06DE4C8E-7C8D-4637-8F71-26BF6E08B051/Documents/.Stanza/Library/2/42

does not exist.

but this exists:

/var/mobile/Applications/06DE4C8E-7C8D-4637-8F71-26BF6E08B051/Documents/.Stanza/Library/2/42.explode/

that is a directory which contains some other subfolders:
META-INF
OEBPS
mimetype

I hope this helps you.

Hmmm... 'Documents/.Stanza/Library/2/42' is supposed to be the original book file (e.g. the epub file), while 'Documents/.Stanza/Library/2/42.explode/' is an uncompressed version. After a quick check, seems all the files with problems don't have a 'Documents/.Stanza/Library/x/xx' file, but a 'Documents/.Stanza/Library/x/xx.orig' instead. Perhaps Stanza didn't finish processing them for some reason when it added them.

The uncompressed directory looks fine though. Hmmm... but still, if we remove the .orig extension and the exploded directory... Eureka! Stanza uncompresses it again the next time you open it and works just fine (except for the white freezes of course). Just removing the .orig extension works with most books, but I found at least one case in which I also had to remove the directories, so it's better to remove them all. The following commands should take care of fixing all your library:

cd
cd Applications
export stanza_app=`find . -name '*Stanza.app'`
export stanza_lib=${stanza_app%Stanza.app}Documents/.Stanza/Library/
cd $stanza_lib

find . -name '*.orig' | while read file; do export file=${file%.orig}; echo Fixing $file; mv $file.orig $file; rm -R $file.cache $file.explode; done

You should run them with the user mobile from any terminal, like Putty. You can do it from WinSCP's console ("Open terminal"), one line at a time. Sadly the Terminal application doesn't supports copy/paste, but you can save the commands to a file, say mobile/fixstanza.sh, and then just run it with ". fixstanza.sh" (yes, that's a dot-n-space before the filename) from the terminal.

If your device is still jailed, you're out of luck I'm afraid, AFAIK only Stanza can change it's own files.

Cheers!

Required container.xml file missing from zip: 10 (the other book says 9 here). Can someone please help??

I'd suggest you open a new Problem with those errors as the title, since they seem unrelated to the current topic. That way, other users with the same problem could more readily find a place to discuss it, and hopefully someone will come up with a solution.

Things look kind of grim around here though. I've not seen Stanza's support offer any advice other than "walk out of the room and back inside, and see what happens", though we didn't got even that in this topic. We had to figure out the solution by ourselves, and fortunately it was technically very simple. Even so, doesn't looks like Stanza will fix this one for jailed users...
In short, if walking in and out the room (deleting Stanza and reinstalling) doesn't fixes your problem, I would not keep my hopes high. :P

This is the third time I've accepted a Stanza upgrade, and the second time I've lost my large library with Stanza. It's also going to be the last. It took me over 5 hours to restore my books last time and this time I have several hundred more. There are other book reader options out there and I'm not going to invest more time with Stanza given their track record.

My device is jailed, and I don't like Stanza enough to let that be the reason I jail break it.

It seems like Stanza could fix this relatively easily with a "rebuild library" option - I can only surmise that those of us affected are not their target customers and thus our issues don't rank highly.

I'm off my soapbox (and Stanza) now.

I have exactly the same problem. Stanza used to be great, but it seems that since Amazon bought them, stanza has gone downhill - it's not in Amazon's interest to keep Stanza strong since they want to promote their kindle application. My guess is that this is the end of Stanza, which is too bad since it was once by far the best ebook reader. This problem (and the other problem with stanza interfering with the iphone email client not being able to open pdf files) is indication of that. I would love to be wrong though.

I'm having the same problem. I just got a blank screen when I upgraded to a new iPhone 4, so I downloaded the most recent Staza. Now all the books in my library are "Unreadable Book Format." Working with a MacBook with the most recent operating system.

Thanks Larry

There seem to be so many people with similar problems you would think that Stanza would do something about it and fix these system bugs, or at least acknowledge the issue and give us all some help.

To Stanza Support

I updated Stanza yesterday (July 7, 2010) and now most of the existing books on my iPod Touch get the message "Unreadable Book Format". Notably, the book Welcome to Lexcycle Stanza is still readable. However, as an example, the book Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand gets the "Unreadable Book Format" message. This book was downloaded from the Free Books catalog. From Free Books choose Feedbooks - Free Content >Public Domain Books >Authors and look up Rostand. Cyrano is the only book under this author.

Perhaps you can load this book to a unit with the older version of Stanza and after opening a few pages of the book then update to the new version of Stanza. Hopefully this process will help you recreate the error on your device. Note, I loaded the books via wi-fi and they were not backed up to iTunes.

I'm sure all the participants of this thread are anxiously waiting to get an update on the status of a fix for this problem

Thanks.

The problem was found and there's a fix above, for jailbroken phones. If you're jailed, then you can either reimport the problem books and ignore the duplicates, or remove Stanza, reinstall and reimport your collection. You can also wait for Stanza to apply a proper fix, but I wouldn't hold my breath. ;)

I can't believe we are STILL having this issue! I'm ready to dump Apple altogether. Sounds like more than a few people are with me. The upgrade totally blows (excepting the ability to subcategories apps, which rocks) and I'm beyond frustrated.

Just upgraded to 3.0.3 and I have yet to find a readable book in my 300+ collection. All have the same "unreadable format" error. My books and documents were in many different formats i.e. mobi, docx, lit, html, epub, pdf. There were also notes for speeches I'd prepared :(. My last computer died a week ago. I have no backups for these books (and I know that bit is my fault). I'm really upset by this. Why are there no previous versions of the app available? Does anyone know where you can get the 1.9.1v?

Oh and the new app seems slow and mildly ugly. The starting page is cluttered and looks clunky.

Is this going to be fixed?
