How to get books into Stanza

You can share book files (in the DRM-free ePub, eReader, PDF, DjVu, CBR, or CBZ formats) from your PC with Stanza using iTunes by dragging files into the "Stanza Documents" part of the "File Sharing" section at the bottom of the "Apps" tab that appears when you select your iPad from the "Devices" list in iTunes.

There are also a number of other ways to share your books, including e-mailing them to yourself and tapping on the attachment in your device's mail app, uploading them to a web page and adding that web page using the "+" button in the "Sharing" segment of the "Get Books" tab.

There have been many questions over the last few weeks about how to get ebooks onto the handheld (iTouch, iPhone, iPad) Fortunately, I've figured out how to do this quickly, with minimal hassle. I use Calibre as my primary library manager, running on a PC (ir runs on Mac as well), and Calibre's content server to vend the content to the handheld. The first step, and one you only have to do once for each ebook, is to import the ebook files into Calibre and get them converted to ePubs if they aren't already in that format. I also go through, correct any metadata issues such as incorrect titles, misspelled author, etc. When I'm ready, I bring up Calibre, go to the preferences, and select "Content Server" I set the Max. OPDS entries to 5000, and start the content server. Then I allow the iPad to connect to the WiFi network the PC is on, start up Stanza, and select the "Get Books" icon at the bottom of the Library screen. Select "Shared" at the top of the screen, then when Stanza comes back, select "Books in calibre on MyPc". You'll be presented with a list of options on how to display the content - if you select "By Title" or "By Newest", you'll be presented with a complete list of all the ebooks that Calibre's content server has under management. Simply hit the "download all" icon in the top riight corner of the screen and Stanza will pull down the complete library, skipping those books that it has already loaded. You can also download by Author, by Series, or by Tag.

I'm wondering if there is any way to import the book Title when downloading an .epub book from within the Stanza iphone 3.0 app via a custom URL.

At the moment Stanza is using the XXX from xxx.epub as the name, which is frustrating as the .epub has the correct title name within.

    Cheers, Simon.

Here’s a super easy way to get books into Stanza if you are also a Dropbox user: Put the book into your public Dropbox folder and right click to get the public link. In Stanza tap the Get Books tab and then tap Downloads at the top. Tap the plus button and put the URL into the field. Stanza should start downloading your book.

Am I the only one who doesn't have this "file sharing" section appear at all?

I'm assuming it's an iPad and not an iPod thing?

I wish they'd either make the interfaces the same or else make the names more distinct.

Hi there - I think I am in the right area - PLEASE help! I have done everything correctly (I think!) but it's saying that the e-pub book I created (by myself in InDesign) is saying there is DRM??! And so Stanza wont download it. Does anyone know how a book I have created in InDesign, then exported digital editions - has copyright issues?? I am very confused. To be clear - this is NOT a DRM book I have purchased. This is one I have created myself.

    Thanks in advance
    Katie

I just bought an Ipod, after 25 YEARS of using PCs. I cannot believe the cludgy, cumbersome process and series of hoops you have to jump through to use this hardware and put some files onto it. With the PC, it is always drag, drop, done. I am about to take the Ipod back. Absolutely atrocious. Good riddance.

  • ROFLMAO! After well over 25 years of supporting the PC and assorted other hardware/OS systems, it's no surprise that a PC user doesn't research.
Had they done so, they would've went with a better OS.
    Solaris, anyone?
Seriously, good riddance! I use a PC, a Mac, Linux, Solaris, BSD, Netware...
    Each to its purpose.
Cludgy interface is typically an OS vs port issue. I'll not blame developers for not FULLY supporting an OS when the vendor keeps changing the API to sabotage the competition!
Just as I fault Apple for the current issues that give me heartburn with this software, as a backward compatible mode could have been accomplished in. Hence, I blame both vendors.
It certainly isn't the way *I* run development projects. I *LIKE* keeping my clients!
THAT bit of spleen vented, Apple needs to get their heads out of their floppy drives. When they ACT like the competition, they drive people DO said competition, as Microsoft is FAR better at such nonsense.
Let Apple go back to its engineering and more friendly roots. Or let it go the way of Vax/VMS.

  • No luck for me. Everytime I try to transfer a PDF (24MB) to my iPhone 3G via iTunes/Apps/Stanza/Documents ->

iTunes Crashes + iPhone crashes. iPhone restarts without me doing anything. And I have to force quit iTunes.

    Not so great.

I have an iPhone 4, Calibre and Stanza. Whenever I 'add' an ePub to the shared Stanza folder in iTunes it is automatically deleted by iTunes. Have Stanza writers managed to figure a way of getting ePub books onto iPhones yet, or do we have to wit for them to rewrite the software for the new OS? Or is it that iTunes blocks Stanza from operating in order to promote iBooks?

I had hoped there was a way of reading eBooks on the iPhone without having to set up webpages and servers and stuff. Like, can no-one write software that is simple and usable anymore?

I've been at this for four days now, and it seems like no-one on the internet can get answers to this.

  • Switch to GoodReader. It's not that hard to get PDF ect. on the iPhone using your browser (one of several methods). Just enter http://IP(canbefound in the iPhone settings):8080 then upload, that's it.

Should it be something like www.dropbox.com/public etc. Or is it much more simple?
I tried, but I did not succeed.
    Thanx in advance for help.

    JVM_Bind and Error -65551: INCOMPATIBLE
What does these errors mean? I cannot connect from my iPhone to get books from my PC now. My PC does not appear in the "Computers Sharing Books" tab on my Stanza iPhone app, unlike before. Please help.

I tried Ctrl + Shift + Esc and ending all Stanza processes because I thought another Stanza wasn't properly closed, but to no avail. These errors still appear.

  • sHeRyL,
I think Stanza needs the Bonjour service from Apple iTunes.
Sharing should be activated in Stanza desktop!

  • Hi, Ljb,

I removed Bonjour as advised by someone from Lexcycle. And last time, I successfully got books from my PC into my iPhone, somehow.

But now it won't work. And yes, I enabled sharing under Tools, but upon clicking it, the Error -65551: INCOMPATIBLE appears. When I click OK and re-enable sharing, the error does not appear anymore, but I still cannot find my PC name under Shared books.

  • Stanza for the PC has never been what I'd call a robust product, and it hasn't had the benefit of maintenance for well over a year. Couple that with a strong dependency upon Bonjour, and you've got a mess.

You'll have much better - and much more reliable - service from Calibre on the PC side. Download a copy, and use the Calibre content server to handle the process of serving up ebooks for your iOS device. Calibre's functionality as a library manager and format converter are first rate, as well.

  • As an addendum to my first posting on this topic (see the top of the reply chain), I thought that I should add this for newcomers. My recommendations for a "bulk transfer" of content to Stanza are still valid, but a bug in the current release of Stanza (3.0.3) will cause it to choke and spontaneously abort whenever you attempt to initiate a "download all" event with more than about 500 items. Given the lamentable fact that Stanza currently offers no options other than "download one" or "download ALL", this presents a problem if you have more than 500 ebooks to be downloaded.

The workaround is fairly simple: Go into Calibre, select a block of ebooks (less than 500), type "E" to bring up the metadata editor for that block of ebooks, then assign a new tag to all of the ebooks in the block by typing it into the Add Tags field and selecting OK. I use a generic tag name like 500A, 500B, 500C, etc. Repeat for each block of 500 ebooks, assigning a different tag to each block.

When you go to actually download the ebooks to Stanza, instead of displaying the ebooks "By Newest" or "By Title", display them "By Tags". Select your generic tag name (500A, for example) and then initiate a "download All" action against that group of 500 ebooks. When it finishes, back up a screen, select the next tag in your sequence, and go again. Don't start the next group until the first one finishes.

While this is less than ideal, it is still vastly better to be able to download your ebooks 500 at a time than downloading them singly. Once you get your elibrary moved to the iOS device, you can resume the "By Newest" methodology as long as you do so frequently enough that you don't have more than 500 ebooks to download in a single pass.

I had hoped that Amazon would actually fix the bug so that this workaround wasn't needed, but they appear to have abandoned us completely. Hope this helps.

Thank you! Your steps worked fine. But I had to spend 1hour googling before found this post.

Ipad2 cost me 500$. And I have no idea why there are so many difficulties in copying files to ipad. Where is friendly apple interface? Just continuous lie from apple combined with their overestimated prices.
