Latest update (3.2) Crashes the app IMMEDIATELY

  • Problem
  • Updated 10 months ago
I just updated my iPod Touch 2G running iOS 4.2.1 to the latest version of Stanza 3.2 and now it will not load up at all. Please update it again...this time so that it will actually work. It worked before the update...now it will NOT work.

Just a small comment. The problem with this updated started before Steve Jobs passed away. Besides, if you will read this whole thread, you will realize the developers do not fix this bug intentionally. Just revert to previous version using one of the many solutions described here.

I fixed the problem by deleting Stanza 3.2 from my iPhone and copying the older 3.1 version from iTunes.
From iTunes, just drop 3.1 from the backed up apps to the iPhone link on the left, and it will resynch it.
However, this will work only if no synch has been done after downloading Stanza 3.2.

Yes, you will lose all the books, annotations, etc.
In my case, I use Calibre from my PC to do a wireless download to the Stanza app on my iPhone, and I had all my books there.
Hopefully, you were in a similar situation.

Kathy, I'm afraid the only way to revert to version 3.1 in iTunes is if you have a backup of the file Stanza.ipa somewhere on your own system. It is usually in the "iTunes Media\Mobile applications" folder (under My Music), but the one that is there will be the later version 3.2 if you have updated. You may find the older version in the Recycle bin. Unfortunately, under normal circumstances, you cannot use someone else's file, as it is locked to that person's iTunes account. Further on in this thread, you may find some way of getting around that, but it is a bit complicated.

Thank you PC and PA. I found 3.1 in my backups and dumped 3.2 from everywhere- computer, iPt and its app store. Did a restart, added 3.1 to iTunes apps and then did a sync and all worked well.
The library is empty except for Stanza info and Alice in W land and I tried reading Alice but what a bore. I am now so used to iBooks and I have already taken the DRM off my purchases using Calibre & its plugins that I don't think I want to go back to Stanza. Will keep it as a memory and may add a few books but really, iBooks on my 2nd gen iPt is so good and BookReader so good on my Mac that I have no probs saying adios to Stanza.
Sometimes it is hard to step into new worlds and this has been a good experience with lessons learned. Try the new for a week at least. Goodbye Stanza and stick it where it don't shine, Amazon.
Appreciate your ideas guys/gals. It's all a learning experience.

PC said "However, this will work only if no synch has been done after downloading Stanza 3.2."

It worked for me PC. I have synced many times since installing Stanza 3.2. Just delete everything as I said above, and then I quit everything, did a restart of my computer and iPt and then dragged 3.1 to iTunes with iPt attached and updated/synced etc and Bob's your uncle.

This reverting to version 3.1 does mean that you lose your whole library, annotations, etc. But at least the app works again! And if you have all your books backed up somewhere, you can get them back...
But, come on, Lexcycle! Too many people have had this problem - there is certainly a deadly bug in the new version.

*Paul Allerton* There is no longer any such entity as Lexcycle so appealing them will not achieve anyhting. They were bought by Amazon some time ago, and this forum is no longer monitored by anyone associated with the Stanza product.

Amazon also announced with the iOS5 update (which was actually not expected to ever materalize so its appearance was a surprise) that all further support and maintenance of Stanza is being discontinued. Whether enough complaints might persuade them otherwise I have no idea.

I didn't know that Amazon had acquired Stanza, nor that they have announced no further support for it. But the fact that just 2 or 3 days ago, SOMEONE posted an update for Stanza, surely means that SOMEONE (Amazon or whoever) is still developing Stanza? Perhaps whover that SOMEONE is could listen to complaints?

Apparently Amazon purchased Stanza from Lexcycle back in 2009. Also, more recently Amazon has its own Kindle app on iTunes. It seems to me that Amazon has all the interests in making Stanza obsolete so that it can drive all ebook readers to Kindle where it can control content.

@ Paul, it might be a good idea if you were to read the thread called iOS5 issues. In there you will find that many of us (myself included) had written nagging Amazon to fix Stanza. They denied having anything to do with it, at all, initially. Much water under the bridge since then and suffice to say that Amazon has NO interest in maintaining it. None. The original developers who worked for Amazon for a while have gone and Amazon itself isnt interested in any ebooks stuff except for Kindle. The update occurred because of the pressure that this community and the one on facebook applied to it. They didnt do it out of any sense of obligation but to get us off their corporate back. The update is partly broken, in any case.

No. Sadly the only thing to be done is to ignore updates on apps you don't want updated, and if you do want to, make sure you back up you mobile applications folder to somewhere else on your drive or on an external drive. Just in case you need to downgrade the app.

I was able to revert back to 3.1 (on a jailbroken iphone). Here's what I did:

1. Download 3.1 .ipa. I found it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?d5v28cr17oi...
2. Rename to from .ipa to .zip, open and extract Stanza.app from the payload directory in the zip file to your desktop.
3. WinSCP onto your iphone (not going to explain this one), find the Stanza app in /private/var/mobile/Applications/F29.... (sort by recently updated and try a few dirs til you get the one with a Stanza.app directory in it)
4. Overwrite the Stanza.app on your phone with the one you extracted.
5. Start Stanza on your phone again, and happy reading!

It's true, it is not necessary to have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod. Mine (iPod Touch 1st generation) is not jailbroken, but I was able to restore Stanza 3.1 by making a copy of it from the itunes folder BEFORE doing a sync, deleting the Stanza app on the iPod, doing a sync in iTunes, then copying the old Stanza app back to the iTunes folder, and doing a further sync with iTunes. But, of course, I lost all my library etc, but fortunately I also have them all in Calibre, so was able to restore them to the Stanza library on the iPod.

I tried uninstalling and re installing different versions linked from this page many times with no luck, even rebooting the device in between attempts. As a note, I have the iPad 2 4.3.3 and Stanza 3.1 would not work for me. I had to use this method with 3.0.3 for this to work.

if you got a jailbroken device:
1. ssh your phone
2. go to: root/var/mobile/Applications
3. search for the folder wich includes the stanza-app
4. delete this file: iTunesMetadata.plist (wich is in the same folder as the app)
from now on, the app-store will ignore stanza from all future updates:-)

Yes, you can update other apps without affecting Stanza. You can update one-at-a-time in the "App Store" app. Just tap each app in the 'updates' section, and you can install individually.

But, it is a pain if there are lots of updates.

In fact this method of updating some apps but not others does not work for me. I can of course tap on the individual apps and it offers a "download" button that says "FREE" or whatever it is, but tapping on that produces no effect whatsoever. So to update other apps, but not Stanza, I have had to resort to deleting Stanza from my iPod, updating all the other apps, then reinstalling the older version of Stanza using iTunes; but of course, then I have to re-install any books I want...

OK, since this thread is getting all the traction, I'll repost my solution here:

Alright, I was rather disappointed/annoyed about the 3.2 update breaking for all pre-iOS5 devices. And, I really didn't want to loose all my books/progress/etc with some of the downgrade methods I saw on here.

Luckily, I found that re-installing the 3.1 ipa via iFunBox worked great. I didn't need to uninstall 3.2 first, so I didn't loose any progress or settings. So, this worked great.

Steps:
1) get access to a PC (iFunbox no worky for Mac)
2) Get iFunbox (free, and cool): http://www.i-funbox.com/
3) Get Stanza 3.1 ipa (I up'ed it here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XQL88HLJ)
4) Run iFunBox
5) Click the "Install App [ AppFastIn ] button, and select the 3.1 ipa
6) $$$ profit !

I backed up the entire Stanza folder before the resinstall, but it didn't become necessary.

Hope this helps all the others on here.

Just a special note for anyone using a jailbroken iPhone with this process: be ABSOLUTELY SURE you have AppSync installed before trying this process. I ran into the same instant-crash problem no matter what I did trying to downgrade until I installed AppSync via Cydia.

If you don't have AppSync installed, or don't even know what it is, check this link: http://cydiahelp.com/appsync-for-ios5... The instructions work for all versions, although you obviously need to pick the correct version of AppSync depending on which version of iOS you have installed.

You won't be able to back up your Stanza folder, but if you use Calibre to upload ebooks on Stanza, then you won't have to.
To reload Stanza 3.1: do you have iTunes 10? If you do, click on Apps, on the top left of your iTunes page under Library. You should see all the apps that have been backed up from your last iPhone sync.
After you delete Stanza 3.2 on your iPhone, on iTunes drag the Stanza app into your iPhone icon on the left hand side under Devices. It will sync it on your iPhone.

Having re-read the Stanza Welcome doc, I had gathered that with my iPod Touch 1st Gen., I would not be able to backup the Stanza folder, since it requres iOS 3.2, which you cannot use on this generation of iPod. I HAVE managed to backup at least the .ipa file for Stanza, and am able (in a bit of a round-about way) to reinstall version 3.1 to the iPod.
Anyway, thanks for your help.

Well Stanza aka Google,
If you are monitoring please note that you have lost rather than gained a customer by sending through an upload that actually crashes your product so that you can push your Kindle. If this is true, as seems to be the general consensus, I for one do not wish to be associated with a company that does not put its customers at the heart of their efforts. I am not a meal ticket.

How can an idiocy like this even happen? I'm paying 1/3 of the app prices to apple so they provide an App Store with quality controlled content. At the very least I would expect to be able to downgrade from within the AppStore, but since they should be looking for Malware, how come they didn't even catch a "crashes on start" bug? This type of issue (had the same with Navigon) is becoming very annoying. I've had several iPhones over the years. I don't think I'll buy another. And the issue is not design, battery, signal reception, but the damn App Store and its nonexistent support.

@Stanza: How about you guys at least comment on this thread?

Stanza, as such, is defunct. Ergo there is no application support here, and never has been IIRC. At the top of this page there is a large orange banner saying that Stanza is not active. It lies when it says that its monitoring. The only people monitoring are we disgruntled users who can not do anything about this. The original developers dont work for Amazon anymore.

Amazon doesnt really care about Stanza unless we all keep hounding them. I emailed this morning saying the update is broken partly on iOS5 and totally on anything that is not iOS5. They replied saying it would be passed to the tech team. I will reply in a week and request progress, I would suggest that the more people who write to Amazon demanding that they at least do a good job of an update, the better. One person sending an email wont make any difference. Several dozen, several hundred probably will.

There is simply no way that this so-called update destroys Stanza purely by accident -- this is NOT just a case of clusmy code -- Amazon bought out Stanza to eliminate it as competition to their Kindle, but simply making it an orphan wasn't killing it so they deliberately released the malware disguised as an "update" -- AND APPLE CHOSE TO LET THEM DO IT VIA THE APP STORE.

Looks like we have two more companies that have decided they are simply too big to care what their customers think.

Hey guys, I'm sure most of the solutions offered here should be able to work but just wanted to share what worked for me. This applies to jailbroken devices with installous.

1. Locate your Stanza 3.1 ipa inside your iTunes directories. If not, you can download it here, courtesy of Matt (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XQL88HLJ) and anblahkut (http://www.mediafire.com/?d5v28cr17oi...)

2. Use iFile (available at Cydia or other sources) to upload Stanza 3.1.ipa to the installous downloads folder at /var/mobile/Documents/Installous. You may need to upload a random .png file with the same name as your .ipa file too.

3. Install the Stanza 3.1.ipa from Installous.

This worked for me, hope it helps!

If you have made an oops and sync'd your ipod all is not lost.
go into iTunes>Library>Apps and right click on the stanza icon > show in explorer.

Delete stanza 3.2 and then go to your trash can and restore stanza 3.1.

Connect your ipod and drag stanza back to your ipod.

Still will lose your files though.

If you go into itunes first you can back up your book files first before deleting 3.2 - then you just lose the annotations/placemarks.

No jailbreak required.

Just one problem with the above solution: if you have (unfortunately) updated the Stanza app to 3.2 on your iPod/iPhone, then synced with iTunes, the new version of Stanza (3.2) will be backed up to your iTunes folder on your computer as you do the sync, so that even if you have copied version 3.1 over version 3.2 on your computer, you will still be saddled with 3.2 the next time you sync with iTunes. The solution to this is to delete Stanza from your iPod/iPhone BEFORE you sync with iTunes, as well as deleting version 3.2 from your iTunes folder and replacing it with version 3.1. Then, when you next sync, your version 3.1 will be installed on your device. You will still lose all your books, so try to have them in Calibre or somewhere, as well as on your device.
I presume you were not able to backup your books, because your iOS is earlier than 3.2 or 4.0...
I emailed Amazon about this problem, and got a typical "not our problem" reply, trying to get me to use Kindle instead! But I'm still trying to get them to take responsibility for this mess!

Actually, I had already synced my iPod with iTunes after updating to 3.2. In my case, I was able to:

Delete v3.2 from my iPod, as well as from my iTunes library.
Restored v3.1 from my recycle bin to the iTunes library
Synced my iPod with iTunes

The books I lost were ones I had downloaded from places like Project Gutenbberg, so I didn't have them in Calibre. I can easily access them again, I just hate losing them because I don't remember all the titles I had planned on reading.

- Removed Stanza 3.2.ipa from list of applications in iTunes
- Dragged Stanza 3.1.ipa in the list of applications in iTunes
- Synched my phone and it works now.

Thanks for all the useful comments and hope mine will be useful for others too.

You cannot use a .ipa file belonging to someone else. When an application is downloaded from the app store it is digitally signed to only work with the account that was used to download it.
