Latest update (3.2) Crashes the app IMMEDIATELY

  • Problem
  • Updated 12 months ago
I just updated my iPod Touch 2G running iOS 4.2.1 to the latest version of Stanza 3.2 and now it will not load up at all. Please update it again...this time so that it will actually work. It worked before the update...now it will NOT work.

Since downgrading from Stanza 3.2 back to Stanza 3.1 I can no longer synchronize books via Calibre content server. I have tried a lot of things including reinstalling bonjour. Initially Stanza found my "Computer Sharing Books" by turning off the Win7 firewall, but since this isn't a permanent solution I turned it on again. The books disappeared. Then I turned the firewall off again,... and the books have not reappeared.

Very annoying.

Erich, Have you considered using the file sharing option on iTunes? It works better than Calibre.
Just connect your iPhone/iPod to your computer. Launch iTunes, go to your apps and locate Stanza. Once you click on it, at the bottom of the page you should see the file sharing option. Just upload any epub file you have previously prepared via Calibre or downloaded from the internet and it will upload directly on your Stanza folder.

It would be more alarming if Lexcycle had not been silent on this issue, since Lexcycle no longer exists. It was bought over by Amazon in spring 2009.

Heh - touche! That's even *more* alarming, as given some of Amazon's recent activity on other arenas, a corner of my brain wonders if this was accidental (but yes, I still think it was). At any rate, they should update the company name in the App Store (I still see Lexcycle).

Mike, I think the company name cannot be changed. The only solution would be to release a new app using the new company name. I remember this has been an issue with some games before, and this was how the developer explained the problem.

Mike, it is standard operating procedure in the corporate world where they buy patented products to either produce them directly, use the acquired technology to boost effectiveness of internal products or, as it is in the Amazon/Lexcycle case, keep Stanza hidden in the attic, so that they can level the playfield for their own child prodigy: the Kindle.
You would be amazed to discover how many useful drugs are kept locked away and never commercialized in the vaults of many international pharmaceutical companies.
I also don't think that the Lexcycle people will go through the legal trouble of challenging their Stanza patent, which is now owned by Amazon, by creating a new company and a new Stanza-like app.
Personally, I will keep using my Stanza 3.1 until hell freezes over and Amazon can go f*** itself with their Kindle Fire for all I care.

I followed Matt's iFunbox solution first:

Steps:
1) get access to a PC (iFunbox no worky for Mac)
2) Get iFunbox (free, and cool): http://www.i-funbox.com/
3) Get Stanza 3.1 ipa (I up'ed it here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XQL88HLJ)
4) Run iFunBox
5) Click the "Install App [ AppFastIn ] button, and select the 3.1 ipa
6) $$$ profit !

Unfortunately for me, it still crashed. But I used a 2.0 version of Stanza and it worked.

BUT I LOST MY BOOKS. (Matt said he didn't lose his)

But I found a way to use USB to get them from my notebook into my ipod (first gen):

http://tungchingkai.blogspot.com/2010...

Download iPhone Explorer (Windows or Mac version)
Requires Net Framework 4.0 Now called iExplorer
http://www.iphone-explorer.com/
The directions I found said "Choose /var/mobile/Media as root directory and create Stanza folder under DCIM directory"

I don't know why the directions say "/var/mobile/" I can't find it in iExplorer, even though I've seen it in other iphone file management programs.

I only found one DCIM folder in iExplrer, so I put a Stanza folder under that. Then I dragged and dropped my epub file into it from windows explorer.

When I launched Stanza and went to Downloads, it found my ebook!

Hope this helps others! Good luck and thanks to everyone for their help!!

Another note: After my success, I tried upgrading to Stanza 3.1.3 from my backup of on iTunes. When I did this, I could no longer find or open the books I'd transferred with iExplorer. I used iFunbox to re-install Stanza 2.0 and still had my books. I'm using a 1st Gen iPod Touch with 3.1.3 firmware not jailbroke. Your results will no doubt vary.

EVERYONE: Follow the iFunbox way to return to 3.1. It works and leaves your library intact. Give iFunbox a bit of time to install the IPA; mine looked like it had finished installing and was doing nothing, I cancelled, nothing, close the app window, nothing, waited for it to close and yes, it closed, and Stanza was back to 3.1. My guess is that the install was running normally, only the UI didn't show it, but since I didn't kill the process, only asked it to stop, it finished installing and then closed.

You need your own IPA. You'll find it in C:\Users\User\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications or ~/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications, or similar.

One more thing: I had to start Stanza twice after the downgrade. The first time it crashed (idk, maybe 3.2. had mangled some index).
Another: the iFunbox method requires no jailbreak.

Same problem on first gen iTouch running version 3.1.3 which is the latest version
WHY DID I EVER UPDATE??? IT WAS WORKING FINE.

Hope you can come up with a fix that saves my books. I'm traveling and no wifi available to reload.

Why don't you come up with a way to load books with USB? That's what I desperately want also! I could restore my whole ipod to an old version but for sure would lose all my books then!

Check your trash can or iTunes, the older version (3.1) might still be there. From that it is an easy reinstall.
There is a way to load ebooks onto Stanza already, through iTunes file sharing.

I tried iFunbox, and it told me I had to jailbreak my iPod Touch - I don't want to have to do that! I personally have found that (provided you have managed to keep a copy of the stanza.ipa version 3.1) copying it back to the iTunes folder as I have described elsewhere does the job, though you do lose all your books from the iPod. That's why I am glad that I have them all in my Calibre library.

But file-sharing in iTunes only works if you have a later version of the iOS, and a 1st Generation iPod Touch is incompatible with the later version of the iOS.

One more set of steps to keep things working on future syncs:
- Using Windows Explorer, take the 3.1 ipa from your recycle bin, move it to a Temp folder under iTunes
- Right click and drag to your apps list in iTunes. iTunes should ask if you want to replace a newer version, say yes
- On future Syncs, you will retain the 3.1 version
- DO NOT DOWNLOAD version 3.2 update. (or if you do, follow the above steps BEFORE you Sync

I followed instructions above tried to downgrade to 3.1 but with no luck.
Does this method only apply to jailbreak iphone? I have a iphone 3G with iOS 4.2.1 and jailed - contract will be ended next month so I didn't want to risk before that. Is there a way to bring Stanza back? This is the main app I was using. Thanks!

Your only other option without jailbreaking is to see whether you still have Stanza 3/1 backed up on iTunes. If you don't, because you downloaded Stanza 3.2 on iTunes as well, you might get lucky and still have Stanza 3.1 in your trash bin.
Just restore to your iTunes app folder and sync to the iPhone.

saimer you can't jailbreak your iPhone! There is still no normal jailbreak for locked iphones on 4.2.1 iOS (those with contracts) If you do, you'll have an ipod instead of iPhone - you won't be able to make calls :( So for you there are only 2 options - wait until Stanza crash fix or to try and find your old .ipa in a recycle bin.

That's incorrect. You can jailbreak any 3G phone with iOS 4.*. What you can't do is to unlock a jailbroken phone that has baseband 5.15.* or 5.16.*.

Thank you guys! I finally jailbroken my iphone. But 3.1 downloaded from above solution still won't work - same as 3.2 upgrade. I managed to find a very old backup at work, it's version 1. Sync'ed from iTune and it worked. It is cool to have a jailbroken phone, but I'm still working on unlocking, even though I upgraded baseband to 06.15, unlock didn't fully work.

Hi. Maybe you lost your library because of downgrading to 2.x. Idk how they did their versioning, but sometimes across major versions programs change their storage methods and older versions cannot read the new storage.

If you don't have your own 3.1 backup you can go back to 3.0.3 using this ipa:

http://letitbit.net/download/63182.63...

Copy to your installous folder and install if you're jailbroken. Or use the iFunbox method described above. It worked for me.

I am on 4.3.2 on an iPhone GS. I do NOT want to upgrade to OS5 as several of the apps I use do not work with it. I have deleted Stanza 3.2 from my phone and from iTunes (using the delete button as simply moving it to the trash did not seem to remove it even after repeatedly restarting iTunes-location showed in the trash.) I had moved moved the 3.1 from the trash to the mobile app folder.
It does not show as available in iTunes library but I have verified it is there in the mobile applications folder.
I am a Mac user and I am NOT happy.
Reloading books is not an issue. I do have the Kindle app but it does not accept epub which is the format that all my books use.
Suggestions for either 1. how to get 3.1 working again or 2. another app which will allow epub format

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have found a work around by trial and error which worked for me and does not require jail breaking. You will lose your books. You do need version 3.1 (or I assume earlier). As many have already said you can likely find it in your trash.

1. Delete 3.2 from your iPhone/iPod and from iTunes. Make sure it is gone from iTunes! If still shows even though it is in the trash delete it thru the menu option. [iTunes-> Edit -> Delete]

2. Move version 3.1 into the MUSIC folder (NOT mobile apps folder).

3. In iTunes select add to library. [iTunes -> File -> Add to Library] Navigate to your music folder and select the version.

4. Reload your books.

This worked great on my Macbook pro.

I'm afraid you will be waiting for ever, if you are waiting for Amazon (who now own Stanza) to fix it. I have twice emailed them, and this is their latest answer:
"As previously informed support is no longer offered for Stanza. We would like to thank you for your interest this product, and let you know that Amazon is committed to providing the best reading experience on iOS though the Kindle for iPhone, iPod and iPad apps.
I'm so sorry, but we can't offer any additional insight or action on this matter.
We appreciate your business and hope to see you again soon."
In other words, they have deliberately bought Stanza to kill it off, since it was a rival to their own Kindle. Personally, in view of this, I will never buy a KIndle!

I don't think there is much chance of success, but if lots of us get on to Amazon complaining about their behaviour, and threatening to boycott them, perhaps they will listen. Try emailing cust.service@amazon.com, or use their "contact us" link on their web page.

There is only so much Amazon Customer Service can do. Management does not seem to care. This needs to get in the news somehow because CEO Jeff Bezo will not act until he has to. Also, boycotting is needed because the Kindle app is definitely no replacement for Stanza. I have stopped buying from Amazon and will never own a Kindle.

When you contact Amazon about their malware "update" to destroy Stanza you will get a reply telling you that " Amazon is committed to providing the best reading experience on iOS though the Kindle for iPhone, iPod and iPad apps" That's right, they happily admit that they are only interested in pushing their Kindle app and that the only people you will be allowed to talk to are their Kindle Support team (who don't speak English if you respond to them at 11PM Eastern Standard Time in the US).

Here's my problem. I have been using Stanza on IPad 1 &i have been using it specifically to create & then read snooks from .PDF & Word & txt files. This is very precious to me. I am registered blind, not a strong computer user. I need to be able to convert files into ebook format because of my work (I am a storyteller & I also record audio books for blind users of RNIB's Talking Book Library. I am supposed to start recording a book on Tuesday & it is Saturday night now! So, can anyone give me simple, idiot-proof steps to get Stanza working again? Or recommend another program whereby I can create ebook files from PDF & other sources?

Giles,
I have found the best bprogramme for creating epub format ebooks from PDF and other sources is Calibre: http://calibre-ebook.com/, although if a PDF file has headers and footers, it tends to leave those in place, which is a bit annoying.
If you do not have a backup somewhere (even perhaps in your Recycle bin) of your own downloaded Stanza version 3.1, I'm afraid you will have difficulty getting it working again. But if you DO have such a back up, the easiest and shortest way to restore Stanza is (as many have already said):
1. Delete Stanza from your iPad;
2. Delete Stanza from your iTunes Mobile Applications folder on your PC or Mac;
3. Copy your backup of Stanza 3.1 into your iTunes Mobile Apploications folder on your PC or Mac;
4. In iTunes, go to Apps, right-click on the Stanza icon to make sure it is version 3.1 - iTunes may tell you it cannot locate the Stanza .ipa file, and ask you to locate it - go to the folder where your Mobile Applications are stored, and select the stanza.ipa file;
5. Sync your iPod and desktop computer using iTunes.
Good luck!

Yep, this same disaster happened to me. I'm on an ipod touch 3 and it crashes Stanza immediately.

I had to reload the old Stanza from a backup after deleting the new version off the ipod.

My entire library got deleted too...

VERY POOR software design and NO testing, obviously. I feel sorry for people who get this problem.

I'd advise Stanza readers to NOT upgrade until they FIX IT!
