What is Purgatory?

Hi, My name is Rita. I am a Christian. I recently had a close nephew commit suicide, while intoxicated. Now my little sister, his Mother,(whom is not a church goer, nor saved) is obsessed with "Purgatory Prayers" which I find is connected with the Catholics',I am ashamed to admit that I have no clue as to what this is, or is it something found in the Bible? Not to go into detail, but I was raised catholic, but never really felt it was for me. I do not attend that type of Church anymore. Thanks, & Blessings..

  • Dear Rita,

Thanks for using Get Satisfaction to ask your question.

Purgatory is a doctrine of the Catholic Church. Catholics believe that it is the place where the souls of the dead go to be punished for sins the individuals committed during their lifetime on this earth. They believe that the prayers of the people on earth can make their time and punishment shorter. The belief of the majority of Protestant Churches is that the Bible does not teach that there is such a place as Purgatory. The time spent on earth is when to accept or reject Jesus as one's Lord and Savior. The Word of God clearly teaches that in this life one makes a choice whether or not to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. Then when a person dies, according to the choice he made about Jesus, his eternal destiny is either Heaven or Hell.
