My best friend and I can no longer send each other shares even though neither of us unfollowed the other. We just randomly can't share anymore, nor can we seem to fix it since we didn't cause it. Talking to my closest friends via shares it literally all I have left to enjoy with StumbleUpon. Will someone please fix this?

I checked my email and found a SU notification that refereed to my friend as "54" rather than her user name.

"Hi Serina,

You have a new StumbleUpon message from 54: "

Seriously wtf is going on. Of all the people to be removed from my share list it just HAD to be the person I share the most with, really? REALLY? I know it's 4/20 but can somebody please fix this, it's torture.

Indeed. I got an email from SU telling me I had a message from "She." A whole lot of users are using "She" as their name. Nowhere in the email did it tell me the username, so I had no clue whatsoever who it was from. Extremely frustrating.

I can't even review this page with SU.

Hmmmwe can't find the page you're looking for.
Please try a different page.

I've noticed that -- they all disappeared -- restricting our ability to share problems is probably not the best way to reduce the problems.

Ok so how do I handle this? We've tried unfollowing/following each other.

I guess I'll just post my shares to her here. Does that work for everyone? Awesome, thanks.

Hi what is the username of the Stumbler you're trying to share with?

54 apparently.

I can confirm this as well. PaulFrank is the user I had vanish and I am sure he's been in touch as he is the one who asked me about it several days ago. He wasn't the person I shared most with, but definitely in the top 20.

Hi,

Not too sure about that one. That username belongs to a Stumbler in Indonesia with 0 Stumbles. Perhaps you have a link to his SU profile?

Apologies... Guess I should have verified his username prior to chiming in. Here ya go: http://www.stumbleupon.com/stumbler/p...

From a human factors perspective, we need to either make clicking the TOO MANY SHARES FROM THIS USER? button either reversible, or pop up a box that asks, ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO PERMANENTLY TURN OFF SHARE FROM THIS USER? -- ideally both. People are going to accidentally click that button, particularly given its proximity to tabs, and other items in the upper right-hand corner of the browzer.

Asking is the easy part: Is this doable IT Superstars?

we're considering some options along those lines, as well as more control via your profile settings, but I can't yet speculate as to when it'll happen.

How about you just remove the feature since it doesn't work properly and "consider" putting it back once you have it functioning?

benadamx, Product Operations Manager

that's more complicated, as it'd require a toolbar release, which would take at least another month at this point.

Oh I am screwed anyway. I'm afraid to update my toolbar every again. I don't want to give up my blue/green logo and I fear all the new glitches as well.. Still... the other people... they might appreciate a less broken toolbar.

I just unfollowed and refollowed NickCobb, and now its working . . . Yay! I was also able to reconnect with Yobaba using the same process, though it was not successful until I allowed a number of minutes between unfollowing and refollowing -- presumably giving the SU server enough time to process the unfollow, and then to process the refollow.

Thanks to @benadamx, and everyone else who worked on this.

Cheers,
Paul

PS--I noticed there was no place to choose to allow shares, or not allow shares with NickCobb or Alice. Am I missing something?

Nope. They removed that. If you follow someone you now have no choice but to get their shares as well.

For the record, I abject to that change as well but who is keeping track anymore these days eh? :P

SO.

It magically fixed yesterday afternoon. I wake up this morning and she is gone from my list again.

You wana tell me one of us accidentally clicked 'too many shares' twice in three days or does somebody need to admit something else is happening here?

benadamx, Product Operations Manager

the proper fix hasn't been released yet, so I'm not sure how it could have yet fixed itself in the first place, unless it was a false positive.

Serinadruid

Well we unfollow/followed and several min later it was fixed but we sure as hell didn't "accidentally break it" again the next day.

It is breaking on it's own. If this has happened with people I share with less often- I didn't notice and maybe they did and maybe they thought I "left them" and I bet feelings have been hurt over this "glitch".

I was certainly worried that I had somehow been offensive and thus had been removed as a friend.

After the changeover quite a few of my friends disappeared and that follow/unfollow thing does nothing. And no I didn't hit the too many shares button. They were just gone all at once.

hey guys,

just to be clear: we haven't actually deployed any part of the fix yet - if following and unfollowing seems to fix it temporarily now, that may be a false positive. the follow/unfollow fix should be released today, and I'll update this thread when it's in place.

the people missing from your share menu, may also have to unfollow/refollow on their end as well, if they've accidentally (or on purpose) shareblocked you.

And no that's not it. They all disappeared at the same time on the day of the transition. And no matter how many times we mutually try we cannot reconnect.

At my end, one thing that seems to make a difference is giving ample time for processing first your UNFOLLOW, and then, again more time before you FOLLOW back again.

Just FYI to staff because WHATEVER.

This is still happening. I am getting reports from people who are having to re-add each other on a regular basis and I just had a friend send me a stumble RIGHT NOW and as I replied I was redirected to the "not a friend" page.

I doubt you guys will fix this (I mean the whole system is pretty screwed innit) but I just thought I'd tell you, what is left of the friends lists are dwindling rapidly. Thanks for that.

Hello,

Can you confirm that people are being removed from your Share list? I have checked your username vrussell6 and I do not see any connections. You may be talking about another account. In either case, I suggest you start a new thread as it does not seem that you are having the issue this thread is related to.

This happened again last week with one of my close SU buddies, she's a sensitive girl and actually thought I had removed her intentionally. She was sad. I'm glad I realized what had happened. We were both still following each other according to the web page but our names had vanished from the toolbar.

I'm sure this happens all the time and I just don't notice. I only notice good friends...

Things don't ever *really* get fixed around here anymore, which is why most people (like myself) don't bother to file reports anymore. I don't feel like this is a reflection on the engineers or devs but due to poor management.

(Yes, I am leaving my two cents along with the arbitrary "report", I do what I want)

I'd love to start a thread about how I've had a stuck stumble on my toolbar for over a week but I would just be told it is due to my old version of the toolbar and information like the fact that my best friend has a brand new toolbar and 33 stuck shares would not be considered relevant.

Hi,

Were you able to reestablish the sharing relationship by unfollowing/refollowing each other? Unfortunately, this bug probably won't be resolved until we rework the toolbars to keep the "Stop Shares" button far away from the other buttons and perhaps add in a confirmation message.

As for the stuck Interests, we are aware of that bug and looking into it. Even if it might seem futile to report bugs to us, or even if it's already been reported before, each report gives us a good head count of how widespread an issue is. Thanks for sticking with us.

Yes we were able to fix it but no, as before, neither of us accidentally clicked the "too many shares from this person" thing. That button has been there for ages and it is only within the last month or so that people are suddenly "losing friends without notice". Sometimes things really aren't user error.

The stuck shares bug has been around for years, it pops up every time the brains tinker on the back-end. One time the error was so impossible to find they had to do a rollback. It is the sort of bug that is easiest to locate and fix when the users report it's occurrence instantly so the boyz can retrace their steps and fix the "it" that did it. That doesn't happen anymore, I am not holding my breath for it to be fixed or the error that causes me to get 10+ shares/same text from the same people when they try and share only once. I've filed it all under "oh well" just like everyone else.

Most of the time when I discover a new page, share it and then go back and hit the info button I get the cats telling me the page hasn't been discovered, that's a really important bug. Gladsdotter mentioned it ages ago when it first started happening. If THAT isn't going to get fixed you can understand why I don't have any hope.

I've tried your suggestion Adrian so many times that I'm starting to think that the follow/unfollow button is like the one you see at the crosswalk. It looks nice and makes a person feel like he's in control but in reality it doesn't do a goddamn thing.

As to the stuck shares Serina, this is what I got yesterday.

you know what they say about bunnies. Maybe the fact we're seeing them so much isn't due to a basically rotten, user-unfriendly design, badly implemented and poorly maintained. Maybe the bunnies are just breeding in the dark corners of Stately Stumble Towers ? If so, I'm glad that at least someone is having fun here ..:)

I have been experiencing the problem too (Friends vanishing from shares etc'), and have reported it. After a couple of days trying to sort things out, I was asked to comment on the service i had received. I asked why had the problem not been sorted out. I never heard another word..
That's service!!?? I think the whole of SU is screwed up agin..

This just happened again to me too, and I can guarantee that I DID NOT click the "stop their shares" button.

Could this be related to the problems with caching that we are seeing all over the SU site, and that are worsening daily? The SU database seems to be suffering major failures, losing the ability to retain and present information!

Just (accidentally) clicked on unsubscribe to users shares when I just tried to CLOSE the share window. Can't navigate my way back to "allow shares from user" (why is the "new" StumbleUpon such a pain in the @#$%!!! to navigate)! Anyone know how to get back to the "accept shares" screen.

Gladsdotter, Champion

There is no separate "accept shares" option in V5. Go to the person's page and click Following to unfollow them. Then click Follow to refollow them. If that doesn't reset it, the other person may need to unfollow and refollow you as well.

Thanks Gladsdotter I kinda flailed around and tied that method out of desperation - after finally finding the @#$%!!! screen I wanted (wasn't expecting much) and to my surprise it solved the problem. Appreciate the quick answer Gladsdotter

This just happened to me AGAIN! I tried to reply to a share and was told "not friend." I went to the person's page, saw I was following them and they were following me. I unfollowed and refollowed and the person reappeared on my share menu.

I had sent this person a share a few hours earlier with no problem. At some point during those few hours, when I was away from my computer and not clicking on the toolbar whatsoever, SU in its infinite nonwisdom decided to disable sharing.

No matter how much you deny it, you have a major bug here. Please look further and deeper and figure out what is going on and get it fixed.

The trend in this thread points to most of the affected users being 1. longtime SU users (indicating an issue with caching of connections) 2. Firefox users. So if this does occur again, can you sign on with another browser and verify that the missing user you want to share with is also not appearing in that other browser? Thanks for your help.

And why does the Not Friend error page show me as not logged in, with the V4 footers?

Hi Gladsdotter,

I think the old SU page you see here is a big clue to what's going. The Firefox StumbleBar is still on the old version of the site and is heavily dependent on the old code. We are working on updating the back end and this will resolve a few outstanding issues with the Firefox add-on. It won't change the look or function of the StumbleBar, just how it works behind the scenes. I'm not certain it will resolve the issue with friends disappearing, but it will at least give the correct error pages when you do get them. More to come on this update soon.

Thank you for admitting that there actually is something wrong. I can tell you that when I pm'd the other person, he said that he still saw me on his share menu (also FF toolbar), even though I did not see him on mine.

This is the wrong thread to be looking for answers. As you can see it has been labeled "in progress" and lacks any recent response from "those who would know" and from what I can gather from other threads treated as such it's time to start another one so that "those who would know" can take a look at it and act all surprised and start asking you what kind of browser are you using and if you've by chance accidentally backed over your computer in the driveway because SU is really awesome you know and it can't be anything they did.
