On visiting someone else's SU page today I was struck my how tiny, tucked-away, and easy to overlook the 'send a message' link is. Its bracketed with, and looks like, the 'flag user' and 'block user' links. Not great positioning. It looks like it was tacked on as an unimportant afterthought or to discourage contact. It should be prominent and designed in a way that encourages contact.
Can you give some thought to doing just that ? Make it a button, change its location, make it impossible to miss, make it invite communication. Anyone who doesn't want this can easily switch off messages but for everyone else it might contribute (with other changes) to getting SU going again and back on track.
