Why is everything so hard to find?

In using the new SU, I have a frequent feeling that things are being hidden from me, or made so hard to locate that I am constantly frustrated, and having to go through ten steps where one should be possible.

More search options would go a long way toward making the site more usable.

1. On the Your Connections page and on the Recommended Stumblers page, there needs to be a "search for a stumbler" option.

2. On the Recommended Channels page, there needs to be a "search for a channel" option.

3. On the Recommended Interests page, there needs to be a "search for an interest" option. This would be different from the "add an interest" option and would, for example, give me a listing of the most popular interests in Music, or Movies, or Books, so that I could go down the list and click "Follow" for those I like.

I am sure others will have more suggestions for about ways in which the current lack of navigation makes the site difficult to use.

In addition to more search functions, more sorting functions are desperately needed.

1. On the Your Interests page, in addition to the A-Z now offered. Z-A would be wonderful, but being able to sort by frequency is essential.

2. On the Recommended Channels page, there needs to be an option to sort Channels alphabetically and by most recent. It's extremely frustrating to have to scan through so many pages to see what's new, especially since there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the ordering of the channels in the lists as they exist now.

3. The A-Z sort of Followers on my profile and others' profiles needs to be made functional. In addition, the sort we now have in the "old SU" by longevity of account when viewing another stumbler's Followers is extremely helpful in determining the legitimacy of an account.

4. And if I can really dream, being able to sort my or anyone's Likes and Additions by most popular would be awesome.

Another example: When you click on Interests on your Profile page and go to Your Interests, you're able to delete interests there, but to add interests, you have to go to a completely different page and sort through Recommended Interests.

This makes no sense whatsoever!!

When I want to change my interests, I want to both add and delete. I certainly don't want to have to jump back and forth between two different pages to have to do one thing: manage my interests.

Yet again, something that was simple and intuitive in the old interface has been made excruciatingly difficult in the new interface.

Excellent phrase describing the new interface: "something that was simple and intuitive in the old interface has been made excruciatingly difficult in the new interface".

Perhaps it's an unfair comparison, but Facebook at least puts out instructions before making disrupting changes.

Given that I have yet to understand Facebook this is not saying much.
Once upon a time StumbleUpon was a cinch to master. It was the first social site I ever even visited and yet I was getting the hang of it in a few days, . But now I fear SU is trying to become the least easy to use (least) social site in existence.

As visitors to StumbleUpon we should give suggestions in a way that will help them to see what our ideas and suggestions are. It's easy to say negative things, and I do the same thing, but saying things that are good with StumbleUpon will go a long way in helping them and helping us, not that we shouldn't share the frustrations that we have, but share more suggestions to improve the website.

Gladsdotter - I have a feeling you're talking to yourself. I admire you for your efforts to try to save SU. I have given up and am out of here in January.

It is amazing and impressive to see anyone still fighting for improvements. I have totally given up, which seems especially sad this evening as I have had a nice afternoon and evening, following a trail laid by a fellow stumbler.

I don't understand why SU would remove things from the main view like recent visitors and recent people you are following and yet give so much prominence to something like "Stumble my Likes". Having twenty "Likes" on the main page means that there is still plenty of room for other stuff down the sides that is now harder to find.

I have great respect for Gladsdotter, she knows what she is talking about, and makes valid points.

I don't however, think that SU listens, or cares

I'm fairly certain that Gladsdotter knows we're in here actively listening, caring, responding, and fixing things (because we are), and that's why she's still reporting issues.

This particular thread leans more towards feature requests, though, and we probably won't be able to respond to that sort of thing until at least after the holidays.

I just saw the new sort box on the Add Interests page: http://www.stumbleupon.com/discover/i...

That is very definitely helpful. But can it also please have a "Your Interests" sort as well, so we could see and remove current interests in the same place we add new interests, without having to click through every group one at a time to find them?

But Benadamx, you say "fixing things (because we are)" but had it not been touched or at least actively beta tested then there would be nothing to fix becuase not much was broken. All SU has done is frustrate everyone by moving or removign features that they found useful and given prominence to ones that are not that useful.

Soon enough, they'll realize the mistake they made but it might be too late by then.

Still listening! Still working! Still want your feedback to get StumbleUpon back to the site you need and want. Please keep it coming because we really appreciate it.

Hi.

I am completely lost in this new format on a PC. I used to be able to go to an interest page and select/deselect interests according to category. I can still do this with my Android app on my tablet and phone.

I have finished stumbling in the Nude Art category in another username account. So I started a new account but cannot set it up easily; like with the old GUI. Am I missing something?

Thank you.

Hi there jnleduc - are you trying to add and remove Interests from your account? I would suggest going to this area in our Help documentation. We even have a video on managing your Interests that should help. Let me know!

If this is what you want, then why change it in the first place without asking your users opinion? its a bit late saying getting SU back to the site you need when you have already made a load of changes.

My suggestion is revert it back to how it was and THEN beta test it with the ideas of users

You can switch back to the old StumbleUpon using http://stumbleupon.com/compat.php as needed as we continue to gather user feedback and make fixes. We took user ideas into account when making the current version (though some people don't believe it, I promise it is true!) and are taking user feedback into account to build on and change what we already made.

Actionable changes and requirements are appreciated.

Unfortunately as far as I am concerned you got very bad advice and are going in a terrible direction.

fair enough, will the option to change back to the old SU be a permanent one, or one that will be removed in the near future?

We will have the option to go back to the old version for awhile longer, but eventually there will be a permanent switch. We have a list of "to-dos" before the full migration. Users will be made aware through a series of onsite and email communications when the switch will occur.

@Ben,

Even though you said that you are seeing the points I have raised here as feature requests rather than bugs per se, from my point of view these are all issues that contribute to making the new SU nonfunctional for users. Everything I have listed here contributes to the deep sense of despair I feel every time I visit the new SU and try to figure out how it is supposed to be used.

Now that "after the holidays" is here, are we going to see any action on these issues? Personally, I consider every one of these suggestions to be something that is essential to have implemented before any thought is given to removing the old SU and forcing us to use the new one.

The title says it all, really.
On the Firefox toolbar i can no longer access the 'Report this stumble as' menu, at all.
It's NOT GREYED OUT, i need to stress that, it simply doesn't respond when i hover over it with the mouse.
I've tried uninstalling all other add-ons to rule out compatibility issues, and i've made sure i'm using the latest version of the stumble toolbar, but to no avail.
So, any ideas ?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
'Report this stumble as' menu broken.

Hi everyone, Hi Gladsdotter.
In the old SU, one of the features I found most useful was the tag cloud. It allowed me to do something fundamental to a social bookmarking site: easily find my old bookmarks. How can I do it now? How can I find something I bookmarked more than a year ago without clicking previous, previous, previous, previous until I reach it? "Search your likes" just takes me to sites I've never seen before.
Any suggestions appreciated. There's just too much useful stuff in my SU to shut it down, but without a way of navigating through it what's the point?

Hi rufusdos,

Your tag cloud is still there, it's just harder to find. On your Profile Page, in the dropdown menu under "Your Likes," choose "Show By Interest."

For a thread on the ways in which searching your likes is broken, see http://getsatisfaction.com/stumbleupo...

There's a link to the Help/FAQ on the bottom of your SU page http://www.stumbleupon.com/help

To see your followers, click on "connections" below your pic on your profile page. There is a drop down box to show followers, who you're following and visitors.

Sorry, let me restate the question. As the person with the stumble account, under manage or report or dashboard, how do I find out who is following me, how many hits I've had or reblogged my post. I found the site by accident, out of frustration and can't figure out how I got there. If I'm paying for stumbles, I would like to know who clicks a "like" or who is following my posts.
Thanks for the above answer, it was helpful but this is why a "Welcome to Stumble" and "This how you get started with the basics" class would be nice. Not everyone, (me) is a tech geek.

Hi Lila,

As a Paid Discovery user, you will find that we provide a dedicated Help Desk and Support facilities. You should find links to those - along various FAQs and 'How To' resources - on your Dashboard tool.

If the answers you find are not there, then our PD Support Team will surely be able to help you out.

Hope this helps.
