saving courses on phone

Is it possible to download and save a course or set of courses on the Android phone. In Europe data roaming is very expensive so if you are playing away it would make sense to be able to save courses on the phone before you go.

This is the one feature that would make this my go to golf app. It should be an option for those who would rather download the courses in advance. I am using it on my 32GB iPhone. There is no reason I shouldn't be able to download the course before going out to play my round.

  • Hi All,

At this time there is no way to download and use a course.

I understand that it would be a very nice feature and it is something that we would love to give users the option to do, but unfortunately it is about impossible right now.

Managing the cache would violate Google Maps API terms of service - So unless they change this, we cannot download a course onto the app.

  • How do other golf apps like Airvue Golf get away with storing the Google Maps?

    • Well, David, I'm afraid you've rather lost me - perhaps you'd like to reread your letters and mine.
Pardon the following which may be obvious to you, but obviously some other forum users aren't familiar with it.
All Golf apps that I know of allow you to download and save the GPS data for courses - and I've looked at many. That's just a series of coordinates, and only requires the GPs on your phone to be switched on - no need once downloaded to have a cellphone connection. The cellphone is acting just as the gps rangefinders do that you can buy such as Skycaddie.
But the holy grail of apps is to have one which stores the Gmap image as well as the grid co-ordinates for when one is not in cellphone coverage. So far the only ones I have found are iPhone apps. Now that Google have changed the rules and developers can cache the maps, Android developers should be able to provide this. It'll take a fair bit of downloading from a 'net connection, but once stored, you can go into deep country without cellphone coverage and still see the map.
I really look forward to that!
    • This "saving courses" is such a big thread! A lot of great feedback here...

David - In the update after stableford, we plan to add a favorite courses tab so you don't have to keep searching. So many big things we want to do...

I'm exited to hope for multiple map options in the future.
    • We would love to be able to add this feature. We actually used Bing Maps when starting up SbS. But, We found Google Maps to be much more reliable around the world.

The problem here is that Bing and Google maps' GPS coordinates are different enough that you wouldn't be able to get the precise distances.

  • I’m surely unsure
That's a bummer. Aren't there golf courses where 3G signal is non-existent? How can we use SbS there? There has to be SOME kind of solution here.... or maybe I'm wrong and there aren't any places signal fails. I was close last Thursday, out in the remote back woods, with -105dB signal. -110dB is basically SOL, i.e. Zero Bars. I would guess that in the remote, deep piney woods golf courses streaming google maps would be impossible. Has anyone reported this as actually happening? Are there ANY plans to find a solution?
    Thanks y'all!

Sorry Roger, you are wrong; cell signal is totally separate from GPS signal! I can track my location 100% accurately using the GPS satellites in view in West Texas, 100s of miles from the nearest cell tower. Not that there are any golf courses in Big Bend, but my guess is that there ARE cases where cell signal is 0, but GPS signal is strong. This request is all preemptive at this point, as I haven't YET encountered a situation where I was totally unable to stream down a map from google. I just don't want to get caught in such a situation as I expand my playing range.

Somebody suggested using scanned-in versions of the course layout, but this suggestion appears to have gone unnoticed.

I would personally go to the effort of obtaining scans of the layouts of my favourite courses, and scale the images to agree with the Google Earth images. It would be awesome if this feature was enabled and available without the need for an internet connection once the round had started.

  • I think that I was the one to suggest scanned images, but after some thought I realize that trying to make every one of us a professional cartographer is not really going to work too well. ;-)
What needs to happen is for SbS to negotiate a new contract with Google to at the very least allow us to cache map data, and at best download and store indefinitely. I would think that if our case were presented rationally, and google's copyrights respected by the app, that google would be happy to oblige - they have always been good guys in the past.

  • I’m beyond frustrated and going to buy a laser pinseeker
I want to weigh in on this question of streaming maps. Many of the courses I play are remote from cell towers. This is the nature of golf courses unless you live in a metropolis. I frequently cannot stream the Google map of the course I'm playing so although GPS can locate my position it's useless. Surely Google can be persuaded to cooperate here. Why not let us purchase map info for each course separately to download and store? I'd happily pay a dollar or two per course. Cheaper than a printed stroke saver. This may alter the value proposition of a "free" rangefinder, but generally in life I find that anything free is worthless. This general rule is particularly applicable to SBS. Apart from anything else the streaming uses my iPhone battery so fast it barely lasts the round and afterwards there’s no juice left for a simple phone call. Come on SBS, do something about this!!!

    Travis, Kevin, et al.,

Please check this out http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/20... and see if there isn't some way that SBS could be allowed to cache a golf course (or several) for permanent availability within SBS. It seems that if Google started allowing this on Androids circa 2010-12 they would be amenable to letting us do it for golf courses.

You are right. Front, middle and back data would be a big step forward and much easier on the inadequte iPhone battery. It's also nice to know distances off the tee to water/bunkers etc, but I have a feeling the distances are determined from the image otherwise you'd need a "Skycaddy" data file for each course. So the best way aound it is to cache the image.....probably?

  • With an app I used on my S60 and Windows Mobile devices the developer's website allowed you to create your course on your computer and put pins in the locations on Google where the front/back/middle of green were (as well as some other features). Those coordinates were then used in the data which you then downloaded to your connected phone. You could also upload your course to their database for other people to download.

  • I am hoping that they will allow the cashing of courses. I often will go overseas and play while I am there. During those times, I will loose the data plan on my phone, but will have GPS access and Wi-Fi capability. When I first started using this app, I was thinking you could save the courses to your phone and then simply use the GPS. I even mapped 3 courses in Singapore that I routinely play in hopes of doing this next time I travel there. I may be SOL

  • First off: I was thinking of posting this under ideas, however I guess I would first have to ask if it is possible at all. (I have searched the existing topics, but couldn't find anything that is the same.)

Being a new member and just having purchased a looper membership I already found out something that might become a small problem for me, with just trying out some basic things.

The app seems to be downloading the maps for each hole and green every time it reaches that part of course. Half of my homecourse is in the forest, sometimes 3g/hspda signal is low, to not available at all. As you can see that could cause problems.

So I know that google prohibits to download and permanently store the map data, but I think is should an can be possible to download all the images at the start of the round. If i am not wrong that is 36 images total, 18 holes and greens. The images could be deleted after the round is ended. This means I only have to have a 3g connection at the start of the round, after that it doesn't mind if the signal is lost. Is this possible at all? (IMO this is within the rules of google, by most just stretching and bending them, not breaking them)

If this is possible and somewhere along the line is implemented, it should even be possible to download the maps at the start, of the round then disabling 3g/telephone services (calling on the course is "just not done" here anyway, and saving massive amounts of batterylife. For my phone the gps doesn't drain that much juice, but the 3g/phone is, especially if there is low to no signal.

I forsee slight problems with the 3d map overlay if there is no 3g connection, however since my signal might get lost by itself that might already cause the same problems. (though I have to admit, I will find out this weekend as I take the app for the first time to the course)

So this was a long post, basically I just want to know if it is possible, if it is, I guess it can go to the idea section.

    Kind regards,

    Teun Liemburg

I was unaware of the changes to Google Maps API ToS. They must have finally heard all of us developers screaming... The two links you provided should give us a good start.

I can't promise this will happen soon - because our plate is so full already. But, it's something we'll start to look into, and should implement at some point in the near future.

  • Hi, all
I've installed SbS on my Galaxy S2 a couple of days ago, and used it on the course yesterday. The cellphone signal is very doubtful in the deep country where I play. But I had no problems.
Today, I can easily look at most of the holes on the phone, which must have been downloaded yesterday (with the phone in aircraft mode) it has clearly cached some of the images. Some zoom levels don't show - presumably I didn't look at them whilst playing.
But it won't update, of course switching out of aircraft mode first.
    So what's going on?
    • Hi Alastair,

Yes, songs like the image was cached.

Try doing a search for a different course and look at the information for it. Then, search again for your course. That may take care of your problem.

Otherwise, it may just be a poor Google Image that doesn't allow you to zoom in too far.

  • Yes - I think the image is cached. And no, I don't want to get rid of it - I want to cache a bit more, and then save it.Under new Google maps terms, I think that is allowed. That will then produce my off-line maps, won't it? And I can play in 'Aircraft' mode, but with GPS on, thereby saving battery, preventing incoming phone calls (a no-no on a course) etc.
Can you clever guys make use of this?

Yeterday I loaded a course on my android phone, browsed through the holes, and then put it into flight mode. Out on the course most of the images were missing but all the distance info was there. I've no idea if this is new behaviour or not, but it's good to know. I may now go to the effort of fixing a phone mount to my trolley.

To be able to load the course before a round would be invaluable when away from home, and great when at home and reception is poor.

  • The scorecard data should always first be stored locally on the sd card and synchronized with the server later from there whenever data transfer becomes available.

Reasons behind this request are pretty much the same as in the topic "saving courses on phone". First in the list is the currently ridiculously high data roaming charges within European operators, which forces us to turn off all data transfer while visiting our neighbours. Lack of local storage makes the scorecard useless if playing more than one round abroad, or in the woods with no operator coverage.

Locally saved files would also act as a nice backup for this information which otherwise will be lost forever in case of hw, sw or user failures. I would like to rely on the hi-tech version alone, but the present implementation makes me wanna fill the paper&pen version too, just to be sure.

Last but not least, local data is available on the way home in "airplane mode", too.

  • Hi,

First, let me say that I think your app and pricing model are first rate. I won't go over the bucket fully of great things I love about the app, but I feel I have to address a serious issue that's been mentioned many, many times.

The lack of ability to cache courses is, at this juncture in your project, really poor considering the following:

    - As you may know, many devices can barely take the batty hit that 'always on' GPS delivers. I have several devices, but the battery for the device i prefer, the new Galaxy Nexus and its massive screen, will only last 4.5 hours when on the course for a fully charged state. If I happen to have had my phone on for two hours prior to playing, I can't complete a 3.5 hour round without the battery dying. Tis is a shortcoming of my phone, not your app.

    - The device I REALLY want to use is my iPad with NO 3G. The size of the iPad blows away even top line fixed GPS systems, but.....

I CAN'T USE IT BECAUSE COURSES CAN'T BE CACHED YET!!!

My company develops automation software for agriculture and industry (robotics of all types, conveyors, et al). If you drive a car made in the U.S., our software helped build it. I only mention this to dispel any notion that I may be a neophyte.

With that said, the process of downloading/storing course imagery from Google maps - with multiple zoom views - isn't a major undertaking for a seasoned developer, especially given the known GPS coordinates of an entire golf course layout. I would even go as far as saying that to automate the process of acquiring and offering for download course imagery would require less than 500 lines of code, certainly less than a day's worth of programming.

The most appealing aspect of using an iPad is the exceptional battery life of the device. One could probably play four rounds of golf with one charge. In addition, I can see clubs offering a fixed mount on the steering column that would accommodate an iPad. For me, I would simply build my own mount to attach to the column so that I could be portable from course to course.

I really hope the integration of downloadable course imagery happens sooner rather than later. I don't think any of your competitors has this feature yet, so why not pioneer even more than you already have?

Again, I apologize for focusing on the negative. As I mentioned, I think your app is terrific. Keep up the good work!

    L.R.

  • I ran into another situation because of lack of the local course data cache.

I try to play twice a week on my home course and now my monthly 3g data transfer quota was exceeded. Of course I could buy more, but I would not like to double the operator fee just because of downloading the same pictures over and over again each time I play a round in there.

If you really cannot provide a decent sat pic cache, please allow us to locally store at least the tee and pin positions so that the score card can be used and the distances to the flags could be measured even if the picture is not showing. Now that you have removed the ads anyway there shouldn't be any reason to require a live internet connection all the time.

  • I have a Droid 4, data plan from the US. When I went to visit my parents in Canada, I knew I would not have data, but thought I could download the maps with Wi-Fi. As we all know, this isn't possible. My fix: I stole my Mom's iPhone and installed SbS on it. Not that I condone stealing phones.

  • I’m frustrated
Really would like to upgrade to Pro with Pro Looper but without even the ability to save a course on my Wi-Fi only 7" Android and track rounds and map distances with GPS, this possibly great app is not useful other than screen saves of the holes in advance with hypothetical shots and distances to achieve. PLEASE negotiate and work to make your app offline capable.
