(Under Investigation) Hipstamatic keeps showing the wrong location on my photos

Hipstamatic keeps tagging my photos with the wrong location. The date is correct, but the location is wrong. Any way to change my location? I do have location services turned on for Hipstamatic in my iPhone settings, and my iPhone has no problem pinpointing where I am with accuracy.

Hey Melanie,

Thanks for your question. Without giving me any personal information, can you tell me roughly how far off the location data is? i.e. from where you actually are/were, how far away do the photos appear to have been taken, when you check the EXIF data? Also, can you tell me which app/method you're using to check that data?

Thanks!
Allan

I'm also having the same problem (Ipad 3, not Iphone). It's recording the location as Long Island as opposed to Brooklyn

Hi Zoë,

Thanks for your note. I have a problem log open with the technical team to see if they can help explain the differences you're seeing in the location data.

Cheers,
Allan

My apologies for taking so long to reply! Last minute out-of-town trip = inbox backlog. Still, my fault.

And as it turns out, this trouble with Hipstamatic is also my mistake. I live in a township in Los Angeles, and expected to see that township on my Hipstamatic tags, but Hipstamatic tags my photos automatically with a name I'd never heard of. This was frustrating, because I want that township tag. But after a check of Google maps, I see I live in a pocket of neighborhood which has its own name - the name Hipstamatic was giving my photos - within my township. Been here for seven years, and have never heard it referred to as such. Oh well.

I would still prefer to be able to adjust the location on my photos in order to make them a little bit more identifiable, but I suppose that's just a small annoyance. Hipstamatic is working properly.

Thanks so much!

Hey Melanie,

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know that this issue is still being looked at by the development team. They've been able to recreate the scenario you describe and are now working on making refinements to the way the app handles GPS data. Look for a fix coming soon. :)

Cheers,
Allan

the location Hipstamatic shows on my photos is on the other side of the country from me. However I have taken a lot of pictures in the location it shows about 2 years ago!

Hey Cinnamon Chaser,

The other side of the country? Wow, that's off by a bit, isn't it? :)

Did you visit there recently? Or is it a location to which you've never been?

Cheers,
Allan

Same problem here. For me, it's a distance of about 10 miles. I live and take most of my photos in Frisco, TX, but they're regularly tagged as being taken in McKinney, TX, to the East.

I'm having the same problem with my hipstamatic. it shows I've taken pictures in a place almost 2000 km away and I have never been there. it is rather annoying. why can't we add location the same way that we do on Instagram?

what I don't understand is that the photos have been tagged with some far off place bit when I go to family albums hipstamatic creates an album for where I stay. s

Hey Robert and David,

Thanks for your notes. I've forwarded all of your feedback to the development team. This is an issue they've been looking into. I know there were some improvements to location tagging that were due to be in the next update to the app. If I get any more details back about that fix, I'll let you know.

Thanks again for info.

Cheers!

Hey Dave,

Thanks for your note. It sounds like the app was tagging your location properly until recently? Was there anything that changed on your phone? Did you perhaps have to reinstall Hipstamatic or anything like that?

Cheers,
Allan

my iPhone 3GS recently started tagging my images as "San Ramon" when I'm in Novato. That's about 55 miles apart. Seems to work accurately in other towns. The only thing I can remember changing recently is my home address. oh- I do use an AT&T M-Cell & Wi-Fi at home because there's almost no service out here.

Hello Allen,

I am getting the same thing happening. The app says Wibird for all of Portsmouth NH but it is only a street or possible pocket neighborhood in town.

Are you guys still looking into fixing this?

Thank you for looking into this.

Hey Joseph,

Thanks for your note. I've checked and made sure there's still a log open with the developers on this issue. I've posted a note to the log today, to see if there's any update on this issue. I know it's not a super high priority, but I believe it's something they're going to address if possible.

Cheers!

Same here - would appreciate being able to edit/correct location tags. This shouldn't be difficult to add to app, no? Certainly easier than fixing GPS issues. Seems like issue is unresolved after 7 months so maybe it's time to give us edit ability, thanks!

The fix for me is I've just stopped using the app. That's a bummer, but no point in not being able to control where it says I am. Might as well be at Yosemite, and have the thing saying I'm in Compton. I agree with Novak, give the user the option to edit the tags themselves. That seems like an easy fix.

Hey Tom and danconnortown,

Thanks for your notes. I wanted to let you know that I've sent a note to the development team to get an update on this issue. I'd previously thought it was resolved in version 260, but it doesn't appear to have been. I'll let you know what I hear back from the team.

Cheers!!

Hi,

I know this subject hasn't been replied to in 6 months, but today I was out in a different town and took a few shots with Hipstamatic and when I looked at the Location, it gave a very general Great Britain.

I know GB isn't the largest place compared to the States, but we do get lost here sometimes and having that location info would be really helpful in future times.

I am using a 4s with up to date OS.

Is there any fix coming for this in the near future?

Thanks

Paul

Hey Paul,

Thanks for your note, and for bringing this thread to my attention again.

I've updated the log that was open with the development team. I know this one wasn't a high priority log, but I hope I can get some sort of update for you.

Thanks again for checking in on this one. I'll let you know what I hear back.

Cheers,
Allan

Hi Allan,

I have done a little further digging.

I I opened a photo taken with Hipstamatic into Camera+ and looked at it's Exif data and lo and behold it actually shows EXACTLY where the image was taken. When I say exactly, it is pretty much down to the definite spot I was when the photo was taken.

To me this means that it just means that there is some glitch in Hipstamatic displaying the info rather than there being a problem with logging the info needed.

Just thought I would update my situation.

Hey Paul,

Thanks for that last update. I also got a note back from our lead developer about this issue. He noted that Hipstamatic gets its location names directly from Apple. Our app sends the latitude and longitude to Apple and they return a place name that corresponds to that information. So the names that we're showing on Hipstamatic images are the place names we're getting back from Apple.

I'm not sure where Camera+ is getting their location data from. They may be using a different method to resolve the location. But I'll mention that detail to him.

I know that's not the answer you were hoping for right now, but I hope that helps explain the current behavior you're seeing in Hipstamatic?

Cheers,
Allan

Hi Allan,

First and foremost, it should be known that Hipstamatic is my ONLY reason for remaining an iPhone user- that is not a joke. The second you port it to other platforms I will be moving on.

So, what is my problem? I live in Philadelphia, PA. I have lived here my entire life and take a ton of pictures in my neighborhood. However, all pictures are tagged "Roxborough Park." Guess what? There is no such place as Roxborough Park! There's not even a park named that! There is Manayunk, Roxborough and a slew of other sub-names throughout Philadelphia.

Please remove the "Park" from Roxborough and I'll be set!
Thank you for your time and for producing such a superior application!

Regards,

Tony
