Setting ScanSnap Software in Paperless Office ?

JWK's Paperless Office:

In setting up ScanSnap software, I selected under Application tab Scan to Searchable PDF.

However, I think I may be missing something because after the scan and conversion, Acrobat opens with the pdf named with the image convention.

If that is where I should be in the process, what is the most efficient next step?

In terms of speeding workflow, is the most efficient to do a Save or Save As at that point and select both a new name (since it is long with FineReader in the title) and the destination?

Thanks for any tips on this.

That's the way the Application option works—it scans the document and then *opens* the result in some application. In your case, it does the OCR and then assumes you want to see the finished result, so it opens the PDF in your default application for viewing PDFs, which is apparently Acrobat (on my Mac, they open in Preview).

But, you can change this behavior, and also get the opportunity to name files in the process!

On the Application tab, choose Scan to Folder. Then go to the File Option tab and check Convert to Searchable PDF. When you scan a document, you'll get the automatic PDF, but also a dialog will pop up that lets you name it and choose a destination. Spiffy!

  • I’m confused
Fujitus SnapScan S1500M - the version of Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard that comes with this scanner no longer works in OS X Lion or Mountain Lion. Do I really need this software if I don't plan to edit the pdfs? I simply want to scan all my documents from my file cabinet as efficiently as possible into searchable pdf. Is Acrobat needed for this? I am about to purchase this scanner but am holding off because of this issue.

    Thanks.

    Jon,

Let me answer this a couple of different ways.

First, even though I have Acrobat Pro (9 and X) I hardly ever use it. ScanSnap scanners include other OCR software—but then, I never use that either! Personally, I let DEVONthink Pro Office do my OCR. But, just saying, if all you need is searchable PDFs, there are MANY options, and you can get that result with the software included with a ScanSnap even if you never install Acrobat.

But second, FWIW, I have used Acrobat Pro 9 in both Lion and Mountain Lion, and so far I have not encountered any compatibility problems.

All that to say: Don't hold off on a purchase because of the software bundle. It'll be totally fine :-).
