Competitions should not be a popularity contest

Competitions should not be a popularity contest asking "Friends" to vote for you to be considered in the top 10 that will be viewed by the judge says that talenthouse values your friends more than it values your art/work. REF Naomi Photo comp (to be viewed by Naomi people have to vote you into the top ten.

    I’m thankful
    Hi John,
Thank you very much for your input. I totally see where you're coming from. We have done a lot of thinking around this as well.

Essentially, each host of the creative invite always has the choice, and is actually encouraged to pick whomever they feel would best fit what they are looking for.

The public voting is just one way to be able to filter through the amount of submissions. Say an invite receives more than 1,000 submissions... it would be an incredible amount of work to go through each single submission. So, again, the voting process is a way for the host to filter through what was submitted.

At the same time, the Talenthouse team and host of the invite will make the effort to go through all submissions to discover the best talent/work and make sure no great talent goes unnoticed.

The decision will not be made on popular vote alone. We are still a young start up and are always open for constructive feedback. If you have any input or ideas on how this could be made better, we would love to hear them. Thanks again!

    Warm Regards,
    Laura

    • I totally agree with John. It's just too random a system to use when we're talking about discovering art. Voting for finalists is fine. But sifting through them that way makes no sense.

It's like "We're looking for an Artist, and we're going to choose the one who has the most friends." :)

Anyway, thank you Laura for taking notice, I really think this is the first thing that should be completely rethought.
    • yeah man true I have worked hard on it.
and the supporters who added me itself are not visible
and too much time for this I spend, dont want all to be in vain
if it is popularity then i will fail cuz it is hard to force people to do somethin

  • I agree with this thought. I can see allowing the friends to vote but for like the Mayday Parade shirt design contest I think their needs to be a limit to 1 vote per person/phone number. Some of the numbers on that got rediculous. Like some that had maybe 4000 views yet were able to pull in 20000 and something votes. I understand trying to save time on the number of entries they have to look at but their needs to be some sort of restrictions I think to even it out and make it less of a "who themself or their friends can vote the most often" type contest. Other than that I've really enjoyed being able to participate in the contests on this site and look forward to futures ones.

    2
    I completely agree John.

I feel that the current setup only rewards those that have the most friends. It's very challenging getting friends to vote (and have them pay money for each vote). I think the final winner should only be decided by the hosting company.

Also, I noticed that with the iLaDusk one, the description and details of the contest had been changed somewhat since the first date.

It's also unfortunate that cash prizes be determined by vote counts. It basically rewards those for having the most friends (or friends with cell phones) also.

I think this sums the current system up:

"We're looking for an Artist, and we're going to choose the one who has the most friends." :) I would add also rewarding the one that has the most marketing skill set.

It's unfortunate because a lot of hard work goes into the creation process only to have the final determination come down to votes - and votes by friends. It was extremely disappointing finding this out after I had entered the iLaDusk competition. Had I known the voting system was such, I honestly wouldn't have entered the competition.

In summary, I feel that talenthouse should serve as a showcase or hub for viewing and hosting competitions that may lead to exposure for the artists. It should also sever as a social network for artists to collaborate and to view each others work. It should showcase the finalist and semifinalists of competitions (which it does well). However, the hosting company should make the final decision as to who wins and it should not come down to peoples votes, or text msgs.

From a format standpoint. I feel that all finalist submissions should be on the same page and we should be able to use a screen shot (thumbnail) of our choice to match our entry. We psychologically want to look at what looks captivating and sometimes youtube chooses thumbnails that don't represent the video well.

  • In huge agreement having just entered Fewdio invite. People with crazy 'watch' figures in the 1000s. This must be some auto view system? The votes are pretty random - and don't relate to the talent. But then I would say that, wouldn't I?! I managed to get 10 friends to vote for 'Rise & Fall, but I do think it tarnishes intros to Talenthouse. I'd rather pay a moderate entry fee if money is the issue. One 'friend' said it was a way of gathering phone numbers.
So hope the guys at Fewdio will look further. About 240 entries over 25 pages, so quite a bit to look at, but not insurmountable. I'm glad I'm on P5 though!

  • I fully understand how money has to be made to keep the website alive but you should think of other means of support, such as advertising, because I truly believe people are making money off the text messages that tarnish the outcome of these contests, but please understand I'm not trying to bad mouth Fewdio, this is a great website that offers great opportunities for people in different areas, but this popularity contest stuff is hurtful when you take the time and effort to present a submission only to have it fall to the side because you're not as popular amongst your peers as your competitor.

A big thanks to everyone for all of your constructive feedback on this matter.

We ask that you please remember to keep in mind that the submission with the most votes DOES NOT necessarily ensure them to be the one that is selected.

In this instance, Fewdio has elected to review each submission as they are public on the site.

Again, we appreciate and encourage the valuable feedback. And we have been taking it all into consideration for better ways to streamline our voting process for the Invites.

    Best,
    Laura
    • The title of this suggestion is misleading. All contests are won by the most popular choice.

There are two things I object to:
      1. I can't view the contestants to vote for them without sending a text.
      2. The only way to vote is to text. There's no merit for actually signing up and trying to vote while using the site directly.

Unless I've missed something and just haven't figure out how to see a list of who has entered yet without pulling up everyone's individual profile. Anyone able to point me in the right direction?
    • of course the people with the most votes get submitted. They said the last 100 people with the most votes then will be submitted to wet and wild, so does that have to do with talent, looks, beauty ect. NO it has to do with votes.

If you want a suggestion I'll give. As exists in many communities, that is to invite prominent artists and neutral, in and outside the site, to be moderator of the competition. The first moderator of the competition jury, 1 pick in the top 10 jobs that fall off in your hand, the second jury moderators choose 1 among 10 of the 10 previously chosen by the first group of jurors moderators and so on until you reach the hand of the competition organizer. So would moderator jury of 10 100 to 1000 of 10000 the latter being the creator of the competition. Not forgetting to say that the moderators jury have posted the position of the work according to his analysis, ie 1, 2, 3 and so on, that would be shuffled and serve as a criterion for new selections.

The current voting process is designed to provide an initial pre-selection and the top 20 (sometimes more) voted upon submissions secure their place to be submitted to the host of the Creative Invite to choose the winning submission. Nevertheless the final decision is not based on popular vote alone and the host of the project will choose whom they feel is best fit for what they were looking for -- be it looks, a great remix, a film script, etc.

I was really excited about this site at first, but you need to find a better avenue to support your site. Like getting companies to advertise, not who has the most friends, and receives the most calls. submit your work, get your friends to vote, oh yea forget to tell you it will cost money to vote, so again this is not about who submits the best work, best look, or best video?

The host of the Creative Invite is the one who chooses the winner based on how that artist/musician/model's entry best fit what they were looking for in their specific Invite -- I am sorry if this is so unclear to you, or anyone else.

In complete agreement with John.....'Discovering Talent' should be about that and only that - Pure Talent thats suits the purpose of the search that was originally intended.

To sift through thousands of submissions would take a long time - but so it should and it should be done without compromise for the talent and efforts of those that are gifted and creative enough to enter.

Something like this means a lot to a lot of people and they should be treated with full respect for their talents....

  • Roni, isn't it for the -Wet N Wild- contest, only the first 25 votes are charged and then the rest of the votes after that (in the semi-finals)

so when you say, $35,579 for 35,579 votes, is that the votes that people got from their first 25 votes each person??

    You see what I'm saying?

  • Well for the wet and wild, only the first 25 votes to get into the semi-finals costed 0.99....& then after that each vote from any person was free. I agree with you, I think that the votes costing money at all, is silly in itself. It's not really fair that people should have to do that, I am just thankful that every single vote didn't cost because I wouldn't have asked my friends & family to do that. But yeah, so if you got into the semi-finals, the voting was free all along. I had a problem though in the middle of the contest, someone was charged and so I brought it up to the Talenthouse staff, and Talenthouse sent a text to that person saying that their 0.99 will be reimbursed.

"Free Vote/Text, One Vote Per Cell.....ETC"

Something of that sort. I wasn't sure about it, so i asked....theres a thread/topic around here somewhere where Laura talks about it.

It seems Talent House is getting some well deserved abuse for the way its running its competitions and also in the way it charges entrants friends and family to cast a vote by text.....Come on Talent House!! - Seriously think you need to sort all this out in a professional manner before many many lawsuits commence.......

Your income should come from your sponsors and advertisers, not from people you encourage to vote, especially considering the initial voting process is to move the entrant to the next stage. Now that is disgraceful and you really should be ashamed of yourselves for treating all your members in this way....To continue like this will soon cause the demise of 'talent house', and rightly so!

    • LOL- No they didn't press a button to "stop charging" There was sections/voting parts of the Wet N Wild Contest. The initial voting and then the Semi-final voting. People that were in the initial voting step, there votes were charged 0.99 until you reached the goal of 25 votes. 25 votes was how many you needed to get into the semi-finals. Then a day later or something like that, the semi-final voting began. There was a new number to text and everything. That's how it was different when it comes to charging. I was confused at first too, but I understand it all now. =)

  • Dear Talenthouse users,

Thanks a lot for your feedback and constructive criticism. I hear you and we certainly take all your feedback

seriously to improve our platform and service and the entire selection/voting system over time.

We built Talenthouse to provide unique opportunities to the creative community (musicians, designers, artists, actors, models, writers and many more), chances for aspiring talent to advance their careers, find great projects to work on or simply collaborate and find other like-minded people. And I can assure you that we put a lot of effort, thought and work behind building this platform that serves up-and-coming talent as well as the entire creative community and that Talenthouse is certainly not a scam!

We are aware that any public/democratic voting comes with it's obstacles and we are constantly redefining the process based on your feedback to make it more fair and better. With a growing number of submissions we had to establish some sort of voting system and as web/click voting was too vulnerable towards fraud we established text message voting (now with only one vote per phone number).

For clarification: The text message votes in the semi-finals of the wet n wild model search were free of charge apart from the usual charges from your own cell phone provider (usually either included in your plan or 10-20 cents).

We recently switched to a new third party text message provider and I admit that not everything went so smoothly and we had to adjust here and there. Nevertheless things worked out and we tried to be as clear as possible as how the voting works and what would be charged for and to explain the whole process. We are currently building a whole new webpage that will explain the system in detail and will be more clear in language and wording.

The voting was also never supposed to be a popularity contest, every host of a Creative Invite and we are here to discover and support outstanding talent and provide the means and project opportunities you need to succeed. So far not one submission went unrecognized, even the ones with a lesser amount of votes, our project hosts made sure to read, look at or watch each and every single one to find the one winner they would like to work with and provide this opportunity to. The voting was designed to provide an initial pre-selection and we are aware that is still needs to be improved and we are working on it.

That said I apologize for any frustration caused, assure you that our team does it's very best to serve you with a great platform for all creatives worldwide and that we will improve our voting system and how it's described.

All your feedback is welcome and appreciated and please feel free to contact us with any further questions.

    Sincerely, Frederik

I must add, I along with many of users on here agree with a lot of the comments Roni has put forward.

Popularity contest seems the way to get you through to the next stage, even if your work is not as good as others or indeed what suits what the sponsor is looking for.

A poor way to run a contest when image content, quality and artist interpretation is paramount.

Sort it out 'Talenhouse' its shocking and shameful.....People will be boycotting your site in a minute!

  • I’m new to this site
I'm new to this site, I just saw friend of mine asking for a vote on Facebook and after much reading between users and employee's, I must say the employee's seem to mean well but, as an first impression, its hard to say I'd enjoy trying to win any competition by asking friends to vote for me with their hard earned money.

Word of mouth travels faster on the internet and is stronger than anything, hope Talent House can make up for having people charged for votes. There are plenty of other competitions else where, maybe you guys can prove yours are the best.

Thank you so much for your feedback, Ryan. Throughout the past few Invites that included SMS voting we have received a lot of feedback and took all that was constructive into consideration and are, in fact, working on coming up with different ways to vote so users do not have to spend money or ask their friends/family to do so. We understand and see all points of view but at the time the voting periods began, SMS was the only way we had to ensure there was no cheating or fraud. Thanks again!

I know you've already said your working on improving the voting thing but it's really annoying me with the Naomi Campbell's Fashion Photographer competition. There is work with loads of votes that is far less impressive than other peoples work with fewer votes.
    • I agree with Sally, this so called "competition' is unjust and unfair...Talenthouse, if you;re holding a competition to find the best talent or photographer with the best work thats suits the clients requirements, then you should get of your backsides and have a judging panel and go through every entry- to make all of this fair! Its what all other Photographic competitions do....why? ....because thats what has to be done to be fair, true and accurate in a competition.....You need to judge every section of this competition fairly, not with popularity votes!!

This will be my last time submitting any work. I have emails that Iam in semi finals with the Naomi photography contest and the Naomi modeling contest. Not once have my submissions been seen with the other semifinals. I cant get an answer, I have written problems, the support talent team, questions, topics Nothing. Yet emails 6 of them, you have so many hours to be in the top 100. I cant even show my model that has friends wanting to vote a picture of herself posted up on the contest to prove to her she is in the semi finals. This blows my mind. I have agents and PR marketing firms I have worked with and was very excited about sending them here. I really cant push this to anyone. All done!!!!!

    • I agree.

ONLY Talenthouse members should be allowed to vote & only enter one vote per contest.

This is easily done and would eliminate the "popularity" voting from other social media sites and SMS etc ... and complete unfairness of this entire process.

It may not push the SEO rankings up for Talenthouse in the short term, by eliminating the social media votes, but would certainly gain it more Social Media popularity, in that it would become a much more viable and reliable resource for talent, for which "word of mouth" would contribute to its eventual, overall success.

At this rate, its going to wind up being a short stop before most people realize they are being exploited for 2 things.

1: they are allowing Contest Hosts to glean fresh new ideas without truly having to compensate anyone by eagerly pouring their heart and soul into projects they are not being compensated for ....

2: Talenthouse is utilizing social media platforms as a way to glean submissions, memberships, and mentions via its voting system and contest advertisements and site traffic.

      I've joined. I've participated fairly. I've observed.

I suggest everyone else do the same. ♥

PS: Everyone needs to pay attention to what has been said time and time again.
The FINAL vote comes from the project host. The people that posted their project. You can have the most number of votes and still not "win". In my opinion, the persons posting their creative invite should be making some monetary commitment via a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winning, regardless of who they actually elect the winner.

PSS: I thought about this more. It may also behoove TH to utilize a panel of judges to vote and offer some type of compensation for doing so, whether that be monetary or advertisement, for some period of time, in order to prompt them and make taking the time to vote, desirable and advantageous.

From what I am reading here, this has been a problem for a very long length of time and is apparently not being addressed, as the SAME voting system is still the ONLY system. What has been rectified since these previous posts from as long as 6 months ago were posted? I'm not sure I will be participating in future voting if this is the case. Paying it lip service and doing nothing to change it, is a statement in itself. :-(

I think voting by sms is not a good way , there are other websites with contests too but they dont charge the voters i think all what they do is saving the IP adress of the computer used for vote so they wont vote again or something like this, i had hard times convincing people to vote for my entry i could end up with 0 Votes if i didnt have friends abroad where i live & Thanks to them , & by the way i live in Morocco - North west africa , & i couldnt vote & nobody else in my country could vote, my phone supports international texting but everytime i tried it said failed. & also some of my friends was scared to vote cuz they dont know how much the sms will cost them & i respect their opinion , i think we need to have more infos somewhere next to the vote with normal sms price out of the price that the operator will charge.

Using the friends system completely defeats the purpose of this web site. Talent should win, not computer manipulation. Get a good panel of appropriate, industry judges to judge contests. Let Talenthouse stand for talent.

I need clarification. When a creative invite says that only the top ten will be judged does that mean that if a submission doesn’t make it into the top ten it will no longer have a chance to be judged or do more than just the top ten get judged. I was kind of confused from the dialog going back and forth on here. It would be a shame if someone was not given a fair shot just because they do not a massive amount of friends/fans. I understand that it is a means of narrowing down the pool of submissions, but ten does seem like such a small number. Thank you for your time; I appreciate it.
    • Ah the saga of an unfair, unpopular judging/ranking system still continues with talenthouse still continues. After all these months talenthouse still haven't got off there backsides to implement a fair and justified system of using judges. Which is what they should be doing to be fair to all the creative talent entering.

There system is a joke and everyone hates it! Its laughable.
Sure way to get your rankings up for work that you've spent valuable time putting together, get yourself a million friends who are willing to lose money on the voting system.

    Hey Everyone!

It's evident that we've had plenty of discussions regarding our voting system since the launch of Talenthouse. On behalf of the company I will apologize, again, for any confusion or frustration surrounding this topic. We can't please everyone but certainly do our best to ensure our Invites are run efficiently and justly.

In an attempt to clear some things up, please review the following:

    - Voting is FREE. We do not charge anyone who votes.

    - We offer two ways to vote: one is web-based via Facebook and the other is through SMS text messaging.

    - The submission that receives the most votes during the voting period is not automatically the winner. Some hosts will select from the top ten/fifty/etc, while others have chosen submissions on page nine or ten. We've also had instances where the host elected to view all of the submissions and bypass the voting stage.

This is why we always encourage any artist who submits to our Invites to look at voting as a way to promote themselves, their artwork, and the passion behind their creation(s).

    - Participation in our Creative Invites is solely up to you, the artist. We love seeing all of the incredible artwork submitted to our Invites but if you are not OK with the voting process, you do not have to submit.

As always, we are open to any CONSTRUCTIVE criticism and suggestions on how we could make the artist experience with Talenthouse an even better one... as one of my colleagues stated, 'Here at Talenthouse we believe that any artist, regardless of their number of friends, should have a chance to be discovered.' There couldn't be an truer statement!

If you still have any comments, concerns, or questions please e-mail me directly - laura@talenthouse.com - I will be happy to assist you as best I can.

    Warm Regards,

    Laura

I'm sorry Talent House, but to come back against everyone's grievance and dislike of your voting process with a statement like this:-

"- The submission that receives the most votes during the voting period is not automatically the winner. Some hosts will select from the top ten/fifty/etc, while others have chosen submissions on page nine or ten. We've also had instances where the host elected to view all of the submissions and bypass the voting stage."

Is really an insult to everyone all over again and just shows how messy, unprofessional and disorganized the Talent House voting system really is.

As a professional photographer of over 15 years who's entered many of the worlds biggest photographic competitions, you simply cannot have a system that random as you have stated above.

*The voting system could pick a winner but maybe not!
    * Some hosts select a winner from the top ten or fifty etc!
    * We've also had instances where the host has elected to bypass the voting system!!

    How unprofessional can it be?!

Either have judges to pick a winner through the true talent from the creatives entering, or one that all the judges agree on because of its impact and style (which in turn would suit there brief they are offering, generally this is where photographers get picked by clients because of their style)

In your case where there are truly no Judges what so ever then your client/host should really be viewing all submissions and making their own shortlist and in turn picking a suitable winner.

Either that or you do the respectable thing and get some official judges like every other 'competition' does.

I was thinking about this discussion and have some ideas:

    1. If you would like to blame the persons who created the talenthouse, try to do it better and show all of us you can do it!

    2. Voting system:

    Good points:
-Voting system and support are good. That's why we use it for the most important things and decisions in our lives. I cannot say it is ideal, but it helps.
-If a person has many friends and can make other people vote for him/her, it is also good. If you cannot do it, you should learn from them.
-The submissions during the voting are sorted by the number of voted people, I believe. It is easy for us to find the top voted people.

    Bad points:
-People always try to cheat! It is not the bad point of voting, it is just like what human beings are and always will be! No offence, just the fact.
-Talent is not about having many friends and being sociable enough to be liked by others.
-Top-voted submissions are not always the best. I believe most people look through several upper pages and select to support anybody from the top voting submissions.

    Improvements:
-Display images randomly at the first page during the vote. This way submissions will have equal opportunity to be voted for. Sometimes you really have to struggle to the submission you like.
-Do not display votes until the end of vote period. Even in political events it is prohibited to show voting rates before the atual vote finishes. This information can influence other people who do not decide yet. That will be fair game.
-Have a separate page where we can view all the submissions at a glance to be able to judge. It is really inconvenient to click Next every time.
-I would like to use any sorting of submissions ONLY after the voting finishes.
-Now the submissions are sorted like top-voted is the first. I believe that after voting finishes, the submissions can be sorted by the ratio Votes/Views. It is really more interesting, because the submission can be viewed 1000 times and voted only 100 times, so we have every 10th person decided to vote. But we may have submission viewed 100 times and voted 50 times, this means every 5th decided to vote. It would be even better if a person can select the sorting criterion.

Moreover, I would like to thank the people decided to create the talenthouse! We all appreciate your efforts, but would like to be on the top)))

    Good luck everybody!
