Telegram will support non-GitHub git servers.

Our first plan is to support public Git repositories. This should come in the August time-frame.

The longer term issue is how to manage credentials in Telegram for private git repos. That's a non-trivial issue that we're thinking about.

Any public Git repo can be a source for a Telegram site.

First, enable "Power User" mode in your user preferences (Edit User).

Next, go to the home page and click "Add site hosting in any public Git repo"

Follow the instructions on the wizard.

  • Question? If my github repo was private, would Telegram still be able to access it? I suspect so, but just want to confirm.

I currently favour BitBucket because it allows me to have private repos. I notice they also have an integrated application section which I would assume is similar to the Applications section that Telegram appears under on Github.

So, it shouldn't be hard to add BitBucket to the list, but of course I realize this means creating custom code for each repo provider AND maintaining it if they decide to change the API.

Regardless, I look forward to the time BitBucket is also supported.

Is this code somewhere, or is that in a private repo for Telegram? The reason I ask is I'd be willing to look at the BitBucket portion, but definitely understand if you're keeping Telegram under wraps.

Telegram supports private GitHub repos and any public Git repo.

We may support other Git systems like BitBucket and other distributed hard drives like Box and Google Drive. But we have no timeframe for the support.

The Telegram code (the code for managing users, repositories, and serving HTTP/HTTPS pages) is proprietary and we have not plans to open source it as long as Telegram is an operating service.
