Allow correction to the score in a game

When watching a match, it is sometimes hard to see who really wins a point. Kids do not always make a visible call. It would be good to be able to edit a game score. The statistics may be a little off, but that is better than being off in the game score. This could also be used if you miss some points.

  • In my opinion, the best way of doing this, would be to scroll thru previous point and be able to edit(change) the outcome, rather than edit the actual score and mess all statistics and the score log.

  • Hi François,

    what exactly do you mean with "scroll through previous point and be able to edit(change) the outcome"?

    We are now thinking on different options for correcting the score, so far such possibilities are considered as reasonable:
    * direct change of the score
    * undo last input
    * undo last point
    * edit the point inputs in a table (kind of editable score log)
    * (feel free to amend)

    Direct edit of score should be possible, but it is not the best way because it mess the score log and the stats. But when you are completely lost, it might be the only way.

    Editing points is a much better avenue

    The way I imagine it:

    The classical situation: The point is ended, you don’t know how the players have called it (if the ball was in, it was a winner, of the ball was out, it would be an Unforced error). The score would be either 40-30 or 30-40. Let’s say you chose the second option.

    In those situations, could hit a button "Mark for later review" in the point editing screen (at that stage it would just flag the point, If another point was already flagged before, it would just replace it)

    The first player makes the next point and the game end (instead of being 40-40) When you want to edit a point, you would select «Edit point» you would be prompted

    • Last point
    • Last point marked for review
    • Select point in list

    If you select option 1 or 2 you get to a screen where you can change who won the point and the outcome of the point (Winner, unforced error, Ace, Double fault, etc...) as well if it was a Forehand or a backhand

    Once done you would be prompted for a confirmation and if you do, the score would be recalculated from that point and the following points.

    If you «select point in the list» you would see a table that looks like the score log ( 0:15 • Theresa unforced error 15:15 • Claudia unforced error etc.) , with previous and next button you would be able to scroll in the table. When you select one point, you would get the same edit point interface as above.

    The big problem is timing. If you spend much time trying to correct an old score, you may get more behind with the current score. I do not need exact statistics, but would like to see the trends, so if a few points are not exactly right, the trends will be good and the final score will be correct.

    The other problem is that occasionally when scoring there are interruptions. If you miss some points or even games, it would be good to be able to set the current score and continue from there. The statistics could include the number of missed points.

    You are right, this is why I think we need direct edit score as well for those situations. But if you can edit the point instead it is much better or the quality of the stastistics.

  • Thanks for your great inputs!

    We are going to support both options:
    1) fix the score at once
    2) edit any tracked point details

  • Implemented in 3.0. As it was discussed (see below), we provide a possibility to change the set score directly, and use undo-redo options to fix the current game score.
