Expanded List Functionality & Community Lists

Absolutely love this site! One area I really look forward to using is the lists feature. I love how easy it is to add items to the lists, and rearrange items within them. However, I really hope this feature is expanded upon in the future.

Sharing, Wiki-Style Lists, Imported Lists, and Change Notifications:

These four features all relate to one another, so I lumped them in as one suggestion. Sharing being the key here. I would love to see a section on the site to share lists, you'd be able to see what lists are "most shared", search for lists you might be interested in (based on actors, film series, etc.), discover new random lists, and maybe even staff recommended lists.

Second, the ability to not only share lists, but also have the option to turn those shared lists into wiki-style community lists, that can be edited. The possibilities here are endless.

Third, imported lists. This is similar to icheckmovies.com, and I'm sure this has already been suggested. But it would be great to have the ability to import, and have automatically updated lists from sites like IMDb. I'm not exactly sure how icheckmovies does this, but if there isn't an easy way to accomplish this automatically, the wiki-style lists would pick up the slack here.

Lastly, change notifications. My vision for these shared & community lists is to be able to "subscribe" to lists made by others. So once you enter your personal list page, you'd have two sections, personal lists & subscribed lists. Any changes to the lists your are subscribed to that are made, would result in you be notified of them. icheckmovies does this through an inbox, but this site could handle it differently if need be.

List Types:

When you go to create a new list, not only would you be greeted with privacy options like you are now, and maybe in the future a toggle to turn your list into a wiki-list (see above)... you'd also be able to indicate the type of list.

The first list types would aid in sorting the community list page, that I talked about previously. You'd simply be able to indicate if the list was a general list, a genre list, or a list based on a cast/crew member. The only real reason for this feature would be to help organize the future community list page.

Other Ideas:

I'd also love to see some indication as to how many, and which items in these lists a user has viewed, and collected.

And lastly, regarding reordering items in the lists, could we have the ability to toggle some sort of ranking system. Right now if you do a Top 10, 20, 100, etc. type list, there is really no indication if the user has them ranked in any sort of order. Yes, you can indicate this in the list notes. Maybe allow badges to appear if a user so chooses, so that if they are listed in order from first to last (instead of chronologically or alphabetically) you could see what rank each show/episode/movie is.

I realize also of these options are duplicates of things you find on other sites, and maybe how I have them explained isn't the most straightforward. But since trakt has the ability to automatically scrobble watched items, this site has the ability to be much more user friendly compared to sites like icheckmovies, where one has to manually check off items.

If you have any questions, or need any help fleshing out these possible future features just let me know.

EDIT: If the ranking system I talked about in the previous post were to be implemented, it would also be nice to reverse the order... i.e. 100, 99, 98, etc.

EDIT 2: It would also be nice if you could automatically import all movies watched in a given year into a newly created list. And maybe the ability to have that last automatically update each time you watch a new movie... perhaps adding them to the bottom with a banner saying "new" or something to that effect, so we know which one's we still need to re-order.

Again, this would be tremendously helpful for those of us that do year end lists.

WoW... this has to be given a vote by me =)
icheckmovies decided to ask money for users if they want to create lists, so... nouse to be there now, at least for me.

I agree with you on all points. A wiki-style list would surely come in handy with for example the suggestion i made earlier about events like a movie marathon or the Oscar nominations. http://getsatisfaction.com/trakt/topi...

Absolutely love the idea of having the community lists include the "shout" feature for discussion. I think, it would also be great to have this as an option for user lists as well... So for example when I finish me Top 25 of 2011 list, and switch it from private to public I could decide wether or not I wanted to open up my list for comments.

Regarding the Oscar nomination lists, I have one suggestion. I'd rather those "event" style lists not be wiki-style but be done by trakt staff or a set of community mods. Here's why... Wouldn't it be fantastic to have this Community List page have special events every month (or every few months) listed at the top of the page. So for example in the lead up to Award Season, a whole bunch of lists for all the categories for the major award shows would be featured up top, so users could subscribe to and discuss. You could also add Top 10 Lists from popular critics/actors/directors to the Award Season feature as well. You could have theme months, for Halloween & Christmas... these featured lists could be based on last years trakt stats (ex. Top 100 Most Watched Horror Movies), and we could also scour the Internet sites that publish Best of Lists, and feature those as well.

I realize all my suggestions, might be rather complicated to fully implement, but it would be fantastic for adding to the community feel trakt already has.

Thank you for the extremely thorough suggestions and comments from all of you. Lists definitely have a lot of potential and we're planning to expand upon them with ideas like this. We released custom lists with limited functionality to just get it out there to let people use it and to get feedback like this. Our future plans definitely include updates for lists, now its just a matter of finding the time and prioritizing with the seemingly infinite todo list :)

No need to thank us, you've created an awesome site here, the least we can do is make suggestions to help you guys out.

I just discovered that the site already has one of the custom lists I was thinking about already done, and that is cast/crew member lists. Just to further expand on my idea for "Featured Lists"... after the Oscars, trakt could feature the filmography lists for all the films directed by the winner of the best director award, same for actors, and writers.

One slight suggestion to these filmography pages, right now there seems to be know way to link directly to a specific section of a person's filmography. For example, I can link to Brad Pitt's profile page, but I can't link directly to his film acting filmography. This would help when, hopefully, you guys implement the Featured Lists feature. :)

Also, would be nice to have "Shouts" added to each section of a person's profile. So we could have discussions about a person's acting or someone else's directing.

Just a quick update, have started to work on list updates. You can now enable numbering (actually this was out a few weeks ago). I don't have an exact timeline, but here is the general order I'll be looking into things:

- liking lists (i think a super simple like is all that is needed)
- % watched/collected for a list (a little tricky when dealing with entire shows or seasons)
- commenting on lists (will be a setting)
- showing all lists a particular item is contained in (will link from the lists stats on each summary)
- searching for lists

I think that is a pretty good start to enhance custom lists quite a bit. After all that, the community list overview page can be created. Then things like staff picks, or other curated lists could happen too.

This is a pretty large feature, but it's something I've been planning and thinking about for a while myself.

The liking of lists could for example be part of the karma points system.

The more likes you get, the more points you get witch will ultimately mean you get a higher status witch in turn means that if someone searches on lists, looks at the community list overview page or clicks on the link from the lists stats the ones with the highest status and/or votes will be listed as the first ones.

This way the ones with the best lists and for example later down the road if a wiki-style editing style has been added, the most extensive and informative lists wont be buried under new lists like it is right now with the shouts.

To make sure that new lists get a change to get more votes you can have different ways of viewing the lists. For example: most viewed, best rated, most recent and most commented on. And with every view you could have the option to choose for that day, week, month, year or all-time.

What you could also do is add different methods of viewing the lists. For example one where the poster is seen, one where the artwork is seen and one where there is just a link to the item in question. And also maybe you could add a way to link shouts and reviews specific to a tv show or movie that are on the list. You could for example show the shout you made on an item on the list in a special pop-up on the list page.

Few questions/comments about the update on this feature:

- Very exceited to see this feature moving forward. I was in a coffee shop when I read this and there was an audible "YES" coming from my direction. There may have been a fist pump as well.

- Love that rankings have been added. One small suggestion, the number graphics could be a bit more prominent. Similar size, same position, just a bit larger... maybe a different color.

- You mentioned allowing comments AND shouts as options. What would be the difference between the two? I always figured shouts were Trakt's commenting system (just needing threading ability). I like the idea of having shouts & reviews as dunpealhunter has suggested, but I don't think we need to create a third option call commenting. Shouts are comments.

- Sort order. If numbering isnt selected as an option, Lists should just be treated as Watchlists are no, no set sort order. Perhaps the default view would be alphabetically. However, all lists should have sort order viewing options. Default for numbered lists would be Ranking, default for non-numbered would be alphabetically. Other options would be:
+ Release Date
+ Trakt Rating (site wide rating)
+ Your Rating (viewing users personal ratings, items they havent rated would show up last)

- I like the way we can rearrange ranked lists now, is it possible this drag & drop method could be tweaked so it works on iOS deviced? I realize this might not be possible, but I'd love to be able to re-order my lists from my iPad.

- ranks will be made a litte larger
- that was a typo, it will have only shouts
- sorting makes sense, will look into after some of the other stuff is done
- will look into ios drag/drop, i agree it would be very nice

Few additional thoughts...

- This might not match up exactly with the standard width of a normal Trakt page, but I'd like to see rows in Lists have 5 items instead of 6. I figure most of the times Top X Lists are multiples of 5, so it would look better.

- The description blurb we can write about should allow links, and minor formatting ability, like paragraphs. We don't need HTML here, but when we make new paragraphs in the editor, it should show up in the finished product. See use case here: http://trakt.tv/user/joecan/lists/top...

I'd like to have a new paragraph start after the locked date, and the Flickchart link be clickable.

- the site is built on a grid system, so the 6 across lines up with that. I don't anticipate changing the flow for this page since everywhere else uses 6 across.
- will look into basic formatting, main thing is we want to avoid spam and keeping it all clean eliminates spam links. There should be something we can do though.

- As long as the web site URL is clear to the user, instead of allowing linked text, I don't foresee a problem with spam.

- Have to say I'm disappointed about the rows. Yes, poster art of that size is standard 6 across on Trakt, but it is't 6 across for everything. User profile pages shows 10 across in your collection "showcase", Episode thumbs in the sitewide TV section are 4 across, Episode thumbs showing most recent watched on user profile page is 5 across.

Each page should best showcase it's use. As Lists are very often going to be a showcase of Top X lists, where multiples of 5 are the most common, the current 6 across looks odd. It's a minor detail, and I'd rather your time be spent on expanding the Lists feature, but I think it's work some discussion at some point.

Like I said it's minor, for now, and while I'm a tad disappointed on this one issue... I just want to be sure to stress how grateful & excited I am that you guys are working on expanding Lists.

Good to hear there is work done on this!

Another thing that needs an overhaul is the way we can add things to a list. As for creating a bigger movie list in the way it works right now: you have to search for the movie, switch to the tab movies and pick the right one to add to the list. It would be great if we can add those directly from the list page itself (or maybe via TMDB/IMDB id). It can be quite tedious if the list is bigger (or the movie has multiple aka's).

Lists will be an ongoing update, but here's a status update.

When creating your lists, you can choose to show the ranks and accept shouts. You can like any list that is not your own. Likes will be used to determine popularity.

Fairly basic (and beta!), but check out http://trakt.tv/lists too.

Woo!!! Love that we're seeing this part of the site develop!!

I know this is just a first step but I have a small suggestion about the layout of that page. If you made each listing/row into two columns with a divider, and then aligned the covert art to the left, I think it would look nicer.

Left side (everything that's there now) | Covert Art of top 5 entries, left aligned.

--

I'm also getting some pretty weird images showing up on that page. The icon that indicates how many items are in a list is the cover art for the film The Notebook. The top list right now on the weekly ratings is Star Wars, but one of the covers showing is for 30 Days of Night, next list down is about Vampires and has one of the Star Wars posters.

--

Regarding the changes made to lists that we've created. I was wondering why the list title wasn't center aligned anymore, but I now see why it was changed, makes perfect sense. The description text was also changed, but IMO, I think it might look better if it reverted back to center aligned, especially considering most list descriptions are going to be relatively short.

Thanks again for expanding this, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you guys have planned!!

I'm not getting your bug with the wrong posters. What I've been seeing multiple times over the last couple of days is that some posters refuse to load and just stay "white". Deleting the cache won't fix it either. When checking back later it's usually back to normal.

Regarding the description align, I would keep it that way. But maybe spice up the design a little (tad bit too grey).

What I'm missing is my own lists. I can't get them to show up even thought they're public :x.. loging out or checking it from my mobile phone doesn't help either :(

The bug I spoke of regarding the wrong posters only seems to show up on my iPad, the bug you spoke of regarding the occasional missing artwork happens for me using Chrome on my Mac.

The current description align IMO, only looks nice if someone has a long description, which is rare. If it was centered it would act as a sort of page break between the list title and the list contents. However when the list shows up on the Lists page that Justin posted, it should remain left aligned.

If you edit one you lists, they should show up in the Updated lists section.

I tried updating some (readding public flag, changing text, removing and readding a movie) but still nothing. Maybe it comes from the fact I had my profile flagged private from time to time?

Some quick notes. I'm seeing the image issues too and that is a known issue on my end. The image loading is something weird with the lazyload (only show images as they scroll into view).

Similar to other pages throughout the site, the lists pages are cached. There is a ton of data and movie/show/episode relationships so caching allows it to load super fast. Only downside is the data is not quite realtime, but the performance gain is absolutely worth it. So, that is why your actions weren't immediately reflected on the lists page.

@in.spitfire your lists loaded for me fine when I viewed in an incognito window

I'm not really sure how useful including Watchlist stats is, since it's only showing a small sample of people who have't yet gotten around to watching an item. It's like Twitter lists, seeing how many lists you've been added to on Twitter, gives you some idea of how people see & categorize your tweets. Looking at that stat on twitter, someone can say, "hey, that person is on X number of lists, he/she might be worth following."

If Twitter included in that stat how many people, one day may intend on following you, it would diminish it's usefulness.

Not sure if that comparison is very clear. What I mean to say is that if the stat only included custom lists, it would (A) highlight the List feature and (B) give someone a quick idea how "important" an item is. Important isn't the right word, but I just woke up. :P

In any case, it's great seeing all the progress this feature has been getting. Big thanks to you guys for doing that!!

Looks great! I assume the ability to hide seen / hide collected will be coming later on, but still it's great to see this up. Is this type of list something you guys have to manage manually, or does it auto-update?

On a side note, and I think I may have mentioned this to you before, but I really do think you guys should reconsider how the seen banners are displayed. The banner simply serves as a way to know if we've watched a title before, it doesn't need to specify how we watched it. Instead of Seen It, Check-In, etc. it really should just be one consistent banner. Just a thought.

It's an auto updated list. Any idea how often it changes on IMDB? It will get the standard hide options yes. I'm also planning on making the watched banner a setting (i.e. show watched by default or optionally show scrobble/checkin/seen specifically if you want to). That can make it easier to understand but also give the control for the stats junkies.

I appreciate you making the default the simpler one, but I'm kind of curious as to why anyone would want to see the banners indicate the manner in which you last saw an episode or film.

I'm a stats junkie, and one of my hopes is for the Charts page to be expanded, which IIRC you are planning. I wouldn't think changing the banner that goes over the movie poster would impact the stats. Like I said, I'm just asking out of curiosity.

We have the same thought on the 1st featured list. I'm not exactly sure yet, but I have a few ideas to try out. I like all the components that are there, and on wider monitors it looks pretty sweet.

Lists page will evolve and I'm sure we'll do things like staff picks, oscar nominated, or as featured lists. For now, its the MVP (minimum viable product) approach where showing the popular ones will work for now. Just like IMDB will likely be the only official lists, but plans to add more in the future. It's better to get it working well enough, then continuing to enhance things over time.

For some of these reasons, I think that is why lists could make sense as a top level feature vs. a subset of community. I understand what you're saying, but I think the community page could have too much info if lists are just added on there. I think lists will evolve enough where a dedicate page makes sense, so I want to start with a section to begin with. I think lists can become a really nice part of trakt.

It mentioned in other threads, but definitely planning to show the % watched/collected on each list. Also a way to visually indicate what's unwatched/uncollected.

Not initially, but I think we'll add subscribing to lists at some point. Like, if IMDB top 250 is updated, it could notify all subscribers or something.

On a somewhat unrelated note, some of the things that Trakt displays well on wide monitors don't really show up very well on browsers and devices when you have a more portrait window. On the main Trakt page where what your friends are doing shows up, displaying any more than 5 items across makes a second row, and it the way that second row shows up looks kind of strange.

I know the standard most items is 6 across, but I think it needs to be more tailored to the page. Another example of this is the lists, which I still think should be done in rows of 5, seeing as multiples of 5 seem to be the standard of # of items on a list.

It uses the masonry plugin so it fits in the pieces to an interlocking grid. I do all testing on my laptop and an ipad, so in general things should work well for both layouts. Thins like the summary fanart are responsive so it looks good on the ipad and even more epic on a wider screen.

I understand how it works, and how it is supposed to look. I'm just saying I don't think it looks very good. For example right now on my iPad I have a row of 5 episode thumbnails in a row, and one poster in the middle of a second row. Considering the large vertical size of poster relative to the thumbnails, that now leaves two large blank spaces on either side of that poster. Other times you'll get a stack of episode thumbnails.

I've seen on some occasions after leaving that page open on my MacBook that if someone watches or rates another item, it will add a 7th item. That's nice on a desktop machines because you're much more likely to see that transition, but on an iPad you rarely see that, so instead you get 6 items in a bizarre cluster. Perhaps limiting the initial number of items to 5 would fix that.

Has there been any discussion of someday creating 'smart lists'? A few examples:

> '90s Horror: Year = 1990-2000 AND Genre = Horror

This isn't really a bug with the Lists feature, but when I was browsing the IMDB Top 250 list, I noticed that Metropolis (http://trakt.tv/movie/metropolis-2013) has the wrong release year, it should be 1927. I checked TMDB and it's right there, so I guess it needs a refresh on the Trakt side.

The latest update:
http://trakt.tv/lists/imdb/top-250

Lots of filtering and sorting updates. It's a pretty sweet effect too. You can sort by ranked (default), title, newest, and oldest.

Additionally, if you are signed in you can like the list, see your watched/collected progress, plus hide the progress, watched items, or collected items.

Thoughts?

The default view for me was with "hide collected" active, imho that shouldn't be the case.

another thing that I would change is the color of the outline for the "top list", I know it's the green that gets used some other places but it looks weird (draws too much attention).

Currently the hide watched/collected are link to the global option seen on all other pages (i.e. popular movies)
