Presenting the new and improved Community page

Just pushed a major redesign of the community pages and we think you're going to love it. You can check out the page at http://trakt.tv/community

The first change is in the order of the page. The top users are listed first on the page because the goal of this page is to feature what is going on with the trakt community. There are several filters available to see the top scrobblers and largest collectors on the site. All time numbers have also been re-enabled! The first place user is more prominently featured and behind them is an interactive poster wall that contains things they've actually watched or collected. Note: drag it around!

Next on the page is a list of users who are most recently watching something. Each user has a new design that calls out the media center they are using a bit more. If they have a location icon, hover over it to see the details. This section also more clearly indicates how many people are watching right now. Click the see more link for more watching info (I'll get to that in a sec).

The next section is the most recent shouts just organized more concisely. You can cycle through them by dragging or clicking the dots. If you're on a touch device (ipad works really well) you can drag with your finger on the shouts and on the top poster wall too.

Now back to the real time watchers (http://trakt.tv/community/watching) you can filter by shows, movies, or the specific media centers people are using plus get a user count for each filter.

Check it all out at http://trakt.tv/community and let us know what you think. There were also a few minor style updates on the calendar, tv, and movies headers to all use the same link style.

The top users list and what people are currently watching look great! I was hoping for a bigger list, than i would have been on it too :'(

However i kinda liked the old overview of recent shouts more. With the new one since it shows only one shout at the time you don't have an overview anymore. That makes it harder to see if someone reacted to your own shout you posted somewhere.

Yep, I can see us expanding that list onto a longer page.

I love the new pod look and filtering by mediacenter, although I agree with dunpealhunter about the recent shouts.

What are your suggestions for the shout section? The 3 separate sections took up too much space imo and the hover effect wasn't styled too well so I tried an alternate approach. I basically just matched the look on the other shout sections.

Maybe its an option to let people choose witch one they want. Is it possible to set up a style page in the settings that lets you decide what you want your style to look like? You could choose between the old style and the new style.

You can still have one section, like how you have now but instead of the dots to click next shout you can display just images and use the same hover you did previously.

Does that make sense? So you still get the space saving by using the filtering options and you also get to see more than one item at a time.

BTW: i just saw that more than 400(!) people are using trakt today. Maybe today is the day the site finally goes over the 8640 total watched movies and episodes? That would mean 1 item watched every 10 seconds :D

Great work!

Although there is no way to "unfilter" the real time watchers. So you can't go back from filtering to MediaPortal and then going back without having to use the browsers back button.

You can just click on the Type (Movies/TV Shows) button again.

I see what you mean now, for the combined movies/shows you can not.

The way it works right is you can filter for shows only (all media centers), movies only (all media centers), or a specific media center (shows and movies).

Oh I think I understand it better now, it's not two filters that you can apply to the full set at the same time, but two filters, where only one can be applied.

That might be a cool update though allowing it to be filtered in that way. I'll add it to the todo list to look into.

Here is a mockup of how you could display the Shouts:

So you can see your still conserving space, but you can see shouts of potential interest at a glance. If you hover over the poster you see shouts like the old style.

What do you think?

That looks good, and with the small dots you can still go back but even further than before. Maybe it would be even better if instead of just 6 you had 12 posters, to give you a better overview. To be honest i think there is more than enough space left to fill the community page. It does not look crowded at all to me.

If you want ipad to work with trakt than maybe its an idea to make a seperate website specially designed for the ipad. There must be ways to figure out if someone is using an ipad or not. Besides, something that works great on the ipad may not work that good in a normal browser in a pc.

The new community page is dumb. It's going to be the same old names over and over... people who play episodes on their TV and don't even watch the show, just like to see their name on the list. I liked the old one because honestly, I don't care who watches the most TV shows, I want to see when someone comments about a good movie or show. Please reconsider this change. Shouts and discussions, finding new shows and movies to watch, that's what makes Trakt great. Not a race to see how many episodes I can play and get credit for.

Sure, the shouts are still there, it's just now I have to check 3 different pages instead of having the 6 most recent shouts of each category quickly displayed.

Listen, as the average user speaking, do I really care that RoChess watched 300+ episodes this week and will watch 300 episodes next week and the week after that? Does that mean something to me other than that he's probably very pale and should probably take Vitamin D supplements? No, it doesn't. But being able to quickly and often check what people are saying about shows and movies means everything.

I just think your "community" focus is backwards. Your community is everyone sharing information. The amount of screen real estate you spend on listing the names of these top users (whom will seldom change week to week) isn't going to grab the attention of new everyday average joe users. Your "community" isn't these same 15 - 20 people, it's everyone else who contributes to the ongoing discussion and now you've made that discussion so much harder to follow.

On the other hand. You site is great. I love it and will continue to use it regardless. I'm just confused why you would take away from the amazing discussions that were ongoing and instead focus on slapping the same 20 people on the back week after week. Don't you agree that list is going to get pretty tiresome to look at?

After seeing it in action for 4 days now i kind of have to agree. In all likely hood will that list of top users rarely change. Especially the all-time users. I am not saying that the list should completely disappear, but another approach would be welcome.

You could for instance put the top users on a separate page and put a link to it like under the community page like with the charts and downloads.

Maybe instead you can use this page to give people other ways of communicating with eachother. And use some of the things that are on the to do list on that page.

Thanks for all the feedback. I will experiment this weekend with a few of these ideas.

I don't want to beat a dead horse here but I do hope to influence your decisions somewhat :)

Look at BenFranklin's shouts made today (8/25). He's talking about the next season of Sons of Anarchy. Includes a link to a preview on YouTube. He's responding to someone else's comments in another shout. This is "community" involvement. This is what makes me come back to Trakt 3 or 4 times a day, "Has someone responded to my shout?" or "I need something new to watch and where can I get some good ideas". He has 17 shouts all pointing out some great new shows and links to youtube previews. Rochess has 0 shouts. #2 this week - Omon - 0 shouts. #3 0 shouts.. #4 - 0 shouts.

Now my advice is to make the youtube links play inline so they don't steer the user away from your site. As Dunpealhunter mentions (and I also follow Dunpeal's shouts), I would love to see you focus more on this part of the community.

I also believe that rewarding people for the most views is just asking for abuse. I'm sure you're well aware how easy it would be to abuse this feature and quite honestly I would be amazed if it isn't already being abused... that or some of these people are under house arrest.

I'm pretty sure the horse is way past dead at this point and will be making an appearance in walking dead season 2 as a zombie :) I hear ya though, there are some other shout todos on the list too like rating them, replying to a shout vs. just a single list, hotlinking things like youtube & user @ callouts, that sort of stuff. Hoping to have some time this weekend to experiment more with the community page and come up with something.

With the new shouts system being rolled out, the community page needs to be redesigned to highlight quality contributions, over quantity. It would be good if it could showcase the most recent, popular (i.e. the most 'likes') shouts and reviews.

It would also be good if there was a way to directly 'like' the latest shouts from the Community page itself.

Also, I don't really see how a 'top member' is a person with the most plays or has collected the most episodes. Frankly, when I see these users highlighted I just think they should get out more! Top community members are people who benefit the community. Rating movies/shows and writing good shouts & reviews benefits everyone, not just watching lots of shows & movies.

In my opinion the default view for 'top members' should highlight those users who are producing the most quality content, by writing good quality shouts and reviews, and rating lots of movies/shows/episodes. Top viewers should still be shown but they just shouldn't be the default view.

Lastly, I think it would be good to have a "Movers & Shakers" section which would showcase movies and shows (or possible seasons) which have suddenly seen a big change (increase or decrease) in the numbers of viewers and/or shouts. For example, it would be interesting to see a list of the top movies / shows that have suddenly become popular with the community. Conversely, it would be good to see which shows/movies that were previously popular have suddenly fallen out of favour.
