Hi David,

We would love to offer calls via 3G on our Android App.

Tru has previously demonstrated that calls via 3G are possible on some Android handsets (and some networks). But is not yet great for everyone, and not quite ready to be included on our App. Nevertheless, be assured we hope to offer this feature in the future.

However, our Android App does include our Tru Anywhere service which means you can still make calls when not connected to Wi-Fi: http://www.truphone.com/truanywhere

All the best,
Dave

dave, i don't mean to be tough on you but that's a real non-answer.

i'm ready to use 3G on my nexus, and if tru doesn't offer it aren't you forcing me to switch to the other guys who do, like skype? people who have inadequate hardware or networks can decide to do whatever they want but that's not a reason to not offer it.

truanywhere is great and useful, but i also need 3G VOIP calling ... are you going to offer this soon?

I do appreciate you enthusiasm.

Although a few VoIP operators do allow VoIP over 3G on Android; due to hardware limitations call quality is generally choppy unless you have near perfect signal.

Truphone pride ourself on our call quality which we believe is superior to any other VoIP providers. Quite honestly, we are not willing to activate calling via 3G until we can guarantee this quality...

However, our handset engineers are working on clever ways of overcoming the hardware limitations that exist on the Android platforms. I can also confirm that a brand new Tru App for Android is currently in development. If Tru over 3G is ready this will be included!

So to answer your question, at this time, we genuinely have no idea when Tru will be available over 3G on Android. Hopefully soon, but I do not have an ETA just yet.
