Twitter Feature: Mass tweet members of a List?

Hey! I'd been having this idea floating around in my head for a long while now, and the new Twitter Lists almost hit the nail on the head, but not quite.

I think there should be a feature, either added to Twitter Lists or made separately, where you can send mass tweets with one @[ListName]. It would probably need a new Command other than @ since it could be someone's username, but you get the point.

So for example, if I want one List to include my family, I might name the list "TheFam" then when I want to tweet all my family at the same time I can just type in [Command]TheFam, instead of taking up most of the 140 character space in the tweet box with usernames.

So basically, its pretty much like a mailing list...er....tweeting list.

P.S. It would probably be a good idea to add the option of selecting or un-selecting certain individuals from a given list before sending the mass text.

Ok looks like I'm the first one to find an idea on this. Check out http://www.retweetbot.com/home/about

I like this idea although if it became a reality I'm sure the pornbots, get rich quick scheme merchants etc will be innundating thousands of users with their spam.
    • I think if this is a concern there should be a one-click "halt buttton" that kills spam feeds / spambots. The onus would be on the list to justify their continued existance through some kind of ajudication process. Maybe there could be an opt-in, or some way to control that first time posters to a list must do a CAPTCHA.
    • Also, Twitter could, by default, hide posts (in an expandable button) to a list from new users (i.e. newer than 1 week). Perhaps users could also nominate others to a list. i.e. an existing list member would have to authorize a new member, and existing list members can always report the spammer.

It could be moderated like Google Groups, where only the designated moderators or only list members could tweet to the list. This will keep out teh spammers

  • Such a problem with bots is a non-issue. Due to the fact that the user can create a list named as anything they want, there will be multiple lists that have the same name.

In order for such to be a problem with bots, there would have to be implemented a method to determine which user's list is being mailed. For example, Joe has a "entertainment" list, as does Bob. For the bot or another user (besides Joe or Bob) to be able to mail the "entertainment" list, there must be a way of answering the question "which entertainment list?"

So the syntax would have to be something like how the lists currently are: username/list (username forwardslash listname). Coding for something like that is a bit pointless, as it creates many other problems. The simplest solution to create a feature like this, also actually prevents the list from being mailed by others.

    ---

That solution is, when a person decides to tweet to their list using the command, it only tweets the current user's list with that name. Let's say the command is a preceding percent sign, to denote replying to a percentage of followees.

    %entertainment hi everyone.

or similar to the direct message it can start with an "L" command.

    L entertainment hi everyone.

the server side script will check for an entertainment list only on the sender's account. If no such list exists on the sender's account, then it is tweeted as a normal tweet. -- It's pointless to search for all of the possible entertainment lists, and most logical for access control. Similar to how you can only DM people who follow you.

Which in turn brings up another issue. Perhaps, the people on the list who also receive the message to the list, must also be following you. To accommodate those who do not actually want to receive your tweets. The delivery method however, should not be like a DM, but instead should show up in the receiver's timeline like a normal tweet. There are many problems with it being delivered similar to a DM, and would require more effort coding-wise.

Which in that case, then the %command option would make more sense, as it flows with the structure of a hashtag, and a reply. Separating the syntax of a DM, and other kinds of commands. As already addressed, the @list is syntax is a problem if the sender is also following a user with the same name as a the list. In general, users won;t want to, and new users might not know to keep in mind that their list name should not be the same as a user's name. As such, %list is more logical.

The aspect of only those following you, being able to receive the list tweet, also accommodates those bots or advertisers who'd attempt to create lists for the sole purpose of tweeting to them (which may address what the original poster of the issue meant, as he could've meant it in regard to them using other's lists, or them using their own).

    ---

There would be a significant number of changes that would have to be made in order for such an idea to work. However, it's not so difficult if it's kept simple. But to complicate matters I'd like to throw out the idea, that a message to a list can have the option of being readable only by the receivers. Meaning, it won't even show up in your timeline (or theirs) unless a person has been marked (in the database) as a receiver.

However, that would make it more in tune with DMs, for DMs are really just private tweets (it's not handled like a mail, hence why if it's deleted by one person, neither can read it. Since it's controlled in a central fashion, just like all tweets).

Just wanted to throw the idea out there.

It's probably a better idea to keep it simple.

    ---

But there is a problem with the tweeting to lists in general. That problem is, "who should receive the tweet?"

Should only those who follow the list receive the tweet?

Should only those who follow you, and are on the list receive the tweet?

Should all of those on the list (even those not following you), receive the tweet, the same as a person who is not following you, will see your reply if you decide to reply to their tweet?

Should all of those on the list, and are following the list receive the tweet?

Personally, I think that those who follow the list, and those on the list that follow you, should receive the tweet. Because if everyone on the list can receive the tweet, then it's still an issue with spam accounts. For even those who decide to not follow said spam account, will receive the tweet from said account.

If only those following the list receive the tweet (whether you are following them or not, or they are on the list or not), the sender will ultimately be sending it to a small number of users, and it might not have the desired impact (because not as many people follow lists).

Such would need to be addressed. Since without some form of filtering, this feature is superfluous.

In other words, if everyone can see the tweet you sent to the list, so long as they are following you, the only benefit would be, that those who are also following the list (but not following you) will receive the tweet (if it's delivered to their timeline, if it's not then there is no benefit at all, since those same followers of the list will see the tweet when they decide to look at the tweets by going to said list, as they have to do now to see the people they aren't following). The beneficial user base in that case is very small, and as such the feature becomes kinda pointless to create. For Twitter, it's only worthwhile if a large percentage of users can utilize and benefit from the feature.

Hopefully everything I said made sense, and it's not overwhelming.

  • Hey - I'm a Twitter newbie, but the whole concept of doing something productive a lot quicker sits just fine with me! By the way, I recently joined to maximize exposure to my RV camping in California articles. I'm still learning - the ropes, so just how does the Lists feature work anyway? @charmbaker

  • This would be a nice feature for someone wanting to migrate their existing followers on one twitter handle to another. You can direct message everyone on one account and ask them to follow you on the other.

Okay.... so I was hoping to find more encouraging news than this about lists. So... once you have a Twitter list put together how exactly do you communicate to the people on that list if they are not able to see your communication?

Guys, there is a tool you can use to do this now: http://tweetca.st

I've been using it for a while and it seems to do what you want - you can tweet all of your list's members.
