Make categories sidebar more customizable w/o advanced templates; make assigning categories easier

Categories are very important to my blog because it's not so much a blog as it is a database of portraits. I'm not using advanced templates because I'm not exactly comfortable with code; it's likely possible to do what I want to do with advanced templates but it would be nice if I could in the basic mode. Here's what I want to do:

1) In the sidebar, have categories ordered by the number of posts they contain.

2) Show the number of posts next to the category name in parentheses, so it looks like this:

Books (26)
Movies (12)
News (5)

Etc.

Also, since I always assign multiple categories to a post and constantly create new categories, it would be nice if it took fewer clicks to do so. The easiest would be if we had a text field to enter categories separated by commas, and it auto-filled the ones we already had as we typed.

Great ideas, especially for showing the number of posts next to the category. Improving the way categories are created and selected is one of the top things on our list as well.

This is a great idea, but I see it has been "in progress" for almost a year...

Is it going to be implemented soon...?

Don't hold your breath! I got tired of waiting and left for Blogger. It's free, I have complete design control, and they are always coming up with new features. Typepad can't even keep up with the free platforms' features, let alone come up with anything new.

Albert,

While this is a good idea, we have a huge laundry list of things like this (hundreds of small feature requests). The team can't possible implement everything that comes their way given resourcing, company strategies, commitments to partners etc. '09 was a big year for TypePad with the redesign, new compose, social network integrations, and the launch of Micro. We plan to continue making improvements to TypePad in the new year, focusing first on the much needed areas and then moving to some of the less requested things. Making design (including sidebar elements) easier is one of the areas we'll be tackling. Will we implement exactly what's been requested above? That's to be determined based on the approaches that we take to the overall design/compose areas. As always, be patient as the team continues to make improvements.

Hi Kimmie, I do understand, it's just a bit frustrating sometimes. Thank you
