Notification of follow-up comments via email

  • Under Consideration
I mentioned this on one of the Everything Typepad threads but I wanted to post it in the "official" feedback forum. :)

Currently, commenters can subscribe to follow-up comments via RSS feed, however, I've noticed that both Blogger and Wordpress allow commenters to choose whether they would like to have a notification for follow-up comments sent via email. When I visit these other sites, I often use that feature and have found it as a quick and easy way to keep up with other comments and it generates significant interaction among commenters. I don't know about others but unfortunately, I haven't had much luck with people subscribing to each post's RSS feed.

So while I receive all comments posted on my site via email, I'd also like commenters to have the same privilege.

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes! And yes.

Also good would be CoComment integration.

If we implemented a feature like this, I think we would want to be conscious of whether a user wants emails with replies to just their own comments, or an email with all of the comment activity for a post. The first would require a "reply" feature for individual comments, like we have in TypePad Connect currently.

So there would be likely be steps involved with a feature like this, starting with an email option for ALL of the comments on a post and then a more specific feature that allows for emails when someone replies to a specific comment.

It should definitely be for all comments on a post because a blog is a multi-directional conversation, not separate two-way conversations between the blogger and each individual commenter. At least it should be! I wouldn't ever be interested in just seeing replies to my comment. Also, on some blogs (including mine) the owner replies to multiple comments in a single comment, so notification of replies to a particular comment wouldn't work in those cases. Much safer to send all comments. That seems to be the standard anyway, so people are used to it.

I'm with IslandBookworm on this. It should be a subscription to all follow-up comments rather than simply a comment thread (if that makes any sense).

Is this going to be implemented any time soon? Email notification for commenters is a great idea. It's really annoying to have to subscribe to comments through RSS. Wordpress and Blogger have email notification - why not TypePad as well? The fact that TypePad does not have this makes me want to seriously consider switching back over to one of those other blog hosting sites because it's hard to have an ongoing comment thread without the email notification.

I gave up on Typepad months ago. If you want to move to Blogger, here's how: http://classical-bookworm.blogspot.co...

Hello!

Thanks so much for the great request of a Comment Notification tool, which if I'm understanding correctly is to allow any commenter on a post to receive email notifications of replies to said post.

We are always accepting of feature requests and I personally collect these requests every couple of weeks and submit them to the TypePad team for consideration. I am more than happy to present this request to the team. If this is something we choose to add in the future it will be put through an arduous quality assurance protocol, then released to our Beta users for testing.

You can keep track of the features that are currently being tested at http://beta.typepad.com/ and if you're interested in general news and feature releases, you can keep up with us at http://everything.typepad.com/

Thanks again for the great request and we look forward to your feedback should we implement this feature in the future!

Wow. Five months? This is a standard feature on other platforms -- please let us have it.

This topic is now one year old. I took a break from blogging about then. Now I'm back, and once more considering leaving TypePad for Wordpress -- because of this issue.

I switched some time ago to TypePad connect, because of the ability to reply to specific comments. But then there is no way at all to subscribe to comment feeds.

I think that the commenting feature is critical for most bloggers -- it's the base of our community. I don't understand why it's being so neglected by what was -- what should be -- the premium blog platform.

Please, please address this.

As has been said, this is a standard feature on most platforms, why can't TypePad implement? This is almost a deal-breaker. Comments can be the life-blood of a website/blog and subscribing to comments option ensures that the conversation flows and continues naturally...

I asked about this several months ago. Not a feature, looking at it on the list. Interim suggestion was to encourage users to sign up for a free Typepad account (micro?) and use Typepad connect to get notifications back via email.
Not sure of the URL for this account, seems it may be shut down as of July for a re-design.
At any rate, not something I want to push on my readers.
