Make backup file contain the actual sound data.

I have both an iPhone and an iPod.

I connect with the iPhone. I NEVER connect with the iPod.

Therefore, when I buy an app I expect to be able to sync it FROM my iPhone to my iPod. Although the Ambiance app itself synced successfully through iTunes, the sounds I downloaded today did not.

If I understand right, even the backup file doesn't get the sounds there. How could it. It's only a few K and the sounds files are much much larger than that.

I'm so disappointed to discover this. If true, it means that I can't use Ambiance. I refuse to use it on my iPhone because I prefer to use apps on my iPod (since my iPhone is already wearing out faster from other uses).

On the other side of things, I refuse to connect my iPod and re-download the sounds because I already have them, I shouldn't have to, and I NEVER connect my iPod to Wi-Fi (peace of mind).

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something about how to get the sounds themselves to travel from my iPhone to my iPod without connecting my iPod to Wi-Fi, etc.

The backup file contains all the information needed to get your sounds on the iPod. Just open it up on the other device and it should start importing the sounds that were there when you created the file. You could also connect both devices to the same WI-FI network and transfer them directly from the iPhone to the iPod. If you don't have that many sounds, another option is simply re-downloding them on the iPod. You will have to allow internet connection at some point in the process to download sounds.

  • "Just open it up on the other device"

I already did, earlier. Doing that gave me a LIST of the sounds on my iPod, but not the actual sounds that I downloaded on my iPhone. Given the backup file is only 44 K, how could it be otherwise.

"and it should start importing the sounds that were there when you created the file."

From where? I would have thought the sounds would have synced up to my desktop and back down to my iPod, but it doesn't appear to be the case.

"You could also connect both devices to the same WI-FI network"

As already hinted, I don't use Wi-Fi ever for anything. NEVER. Thus, my iPod NEVER connects to anything but my desktop. And thus, I have to get whatever I get via my iPhone, which is how I got these first few sounds to begin with. And thus, I can't use Ambiance if I can't get the actual sounds I downloaded from my iPhone to my iPod via my desktop and/or iTunes.

"You will have to allow internet connection at some point in the process to download sounds."

I already did allow internet access. For my iPhone. That's how I got the sounds to begin with.

However, I will NOT allow internet access for my iPod. Prior to this whole experience, I would have thought that the comment "you will have to allow internet connection at some point in the process to download sounds" would have meant my iPhone, and I did that, and it worked, as it pertains to the iPhone.

But as mentioned, although I'm willing to ***download*** the sounds (and already have) to my iPhone, I'm NOT willing to ***use*** them there. The plan was to download them to my iPhone, then sync them to my iPod via iTunes/desktop and use them there.

Because, as mentioned, I will NOT use up my iPhone to play stuff. I'm trying to preserve it's life.

And, as mentioned, I will NOT connect my iPod to Wi-Fi or anything other than my desktop.

This should be simple. Download them on my iPhone. Sync them from there to my iPod with no additional connection needed.

You will need to connect your iPod to the internet to get any sounds on there. The way backup works, as you have already discovered, is that we backup the list of sounds and your settings, then download them fresh when needed.

I understand you frustration with it not working the way you intended, but I have never heard of a case where someone was not willing to connect to the internet on their device.

None-the-less, we are committed to constantly making the app better, so I will change this topic into an "idea" so that others can chime in on whether or not they want the backup files to include all of the sound data. One upside is that you don't need an internet connection to get the sounds. One major downside is that the file will potentially be gigabytes in size, preventing its ease of transfer, generation and installation via a simple link.

  • I know a number of people who don't ever use Wi-Fi. I'm one of those people. I NEVER use it. Not even to validate your use of it.
