Is there anything that can be done about the recent influx of bots/spammers?

In the past few months I've noticed an increase in spam-bots on my forum. At first it was only one or two a month, but recently there have been five or more each week. My moderators and I have been attempting to ban each by IP, however I know from experience that botters/spammers can easily get around this. Is there a more effective way to filter them out within the Admin CP? I've been looking around but I couldn't find anything other than the CAPTCHA which has been enabled since I started the board.

The best way I found was to have the Admins/Mods validate them. Most people know what spam email addresses look like. That is the best way I learned how to combat them. Also using email validation, most of the bots cannot validate using email. This helps keep them out as well.

Use the custom profile fields and make a tricky question. When the person only type his username to answer your tricky question, then it's a bot.

Check his email. Ban his email like this: *@unknownsemail.com, *mail.ru and any email that peopel wont use to register... because we always use msn, yahoo, gmail, aim/aol.

Don't ban @gmail.com, @yahoo.com, @msn.com and any popular well-knows email hosters or normal people wont be able to register.
