FAQ- Copy/Paste Issues and Editing problems Due to Faulty Coding? - Read this first!

Hey Guys,

Copying and pasting can cause some serious editing issues which may lead to the inability to properly edit your site. In addition, incorrect coding within the Sitebuilder can also cause formatting issues among a mountain of other issues.

Symptoms

  • Incorrectly colored, sized, italicized, or underlined font

  • Inability to change font style

  • Cursor functionality limitations

  • Content incorrectly showing (or not showing at all) on editing and/or published web page

  • Incorrectly placed sidebar (pushed down or outwardly away from content)

  • Sidebar Content may be stylized differently than the remaining content on the page

  • Content appearing drastically different from browser to browser.

  • SiteBuilder may not load

  • Coding

At times, as a user you may encounter general text editing errors that make you feel a bit crazy and like you either want to give up the whole project or toss your computer out the window!

(We know exactly how it feels, because it's happened to all of us as well!)

This typically comes from copying and pasting into your web page. When you do this, hidden codes can be carried along that interfere with editing and viewing your page. This is a common problem if you are creating your page in MS Word (MSO). This also occurs while copying from publishing programs and emails.

MSO tags come directly from content copied from Microsoft Office. They are not native to our SiteBuilder and therefore can cause editing issues later on if not removed.

Even if you didn't copy and paste THIS time, if you copied and/or pasted past, it can still cause problems at any time until you remove the copied/pasted content completely.

Some Wordpress users have also reported this same error after copying and pasting. Check it out for yourself here.

Apple span class attributes cause the same issues as well (View Me!).

    Open Tags

Open tags apply any formatting/action to the elements that follow it.

Be sure to know what type of markup/code you're adding to your pages. It's very important to insure that each of your tags has both an open and closed tag. Without both an open and closed tag, your content most likely will NOT render correctly on your published page.

This occurs most notably with iframe Tag use. The iframe tag, if left open will cause content to be hidden in the SiteBuilder and on the published page which is an ongoing issue that multiple users have experienced as a result.

The open tag proceeds the content which is framed and looks like this:

The closed tag follows the framed content and looks like this:

The backslash indicates that the tag is closed. When this closing tag is missing, the SiteBuilder may not load at all.

    Quick Resolutions

  • We recommend you create an entirely new page if this is happening to you. You will at least need to create new content boxes.
  • Do NOT copy and paste content. Instead, type the text and use our formatting tools to adjust it.

  • If you have a lot of text, you might want to paste it into Notepad first, as that will strip out the codes

  • Right-Click and then "View Page Source" to see if any of these incorrect coding elements are present.

  • Additional Troubleshooting

    Option 1 - Start Fresh!

    1. Create a new content box, or a new page
    2. Cut the content from the box or page by highlighting the content, right clicking, and selecting "cut"
    3. Open Notepad (Start --> Run --> Notepad)
    4. Paste the content into Notepad
    5. Copy the content from Notepad by highlighting the content, right clicking, and selecting "copy"
    6. Go to the new content box or new page and paste the content by right clicking and selecting "paste"

If this is on your homepage, you will need to create the new page first. Then use the Switch homepage option in the Site Manager to designate the new page as the home page. THEN you can delete the old homepage.

    Option 2 - Revamp!

These errors can be resolved by switching into Classic Editor mode and editing your code there.

  • Log into www.webs.com

  • Click "Edit this Site"

  • Click on the Control Panel icon

  • Click on the "Website Settings" option

  • Scroll down and change your "Edit Mode" from SiteBuilder Mode to Classic Editor

  • Then go back to your editing page and edit your code there. You can use the same steps to switch back to SiteBuilder mode.

Option 3 - Check out your Browser Settings!

Sometimes users have difficulty using Notepad to enable copying and pasting. This occurs in IE8 due to compatibility issues between IE8 and our Sitebuilder. No worries! That issue can be easily solved by following these steps:

    With your browser window open:

    1. Click on the Tools menu.

    2. Select Compatibility View and you should be able to edit properly.

  • If you have already copied and pasted content improperly, it is best to still delete the old content boxes or pages. You can recreate the page(s) correctly using this option.

  • Once you have enabled that option, some sites may appear differently since you have switched to and older version of Internet Explorer.

  • Please Note:You can actually enable this option specifically for webs.com and it will automatically do so whenever you login to edit. Simply click the "Tools" dropdown menu again and click on "Compatibility View Settings". Add www.webs.com and then close the window.

Those tips should help but you can feel free to share some tips that work for you too!

    Thanks Guys!
