FAQ. Site down? Can't find your site? Read this first!

There are a number of reasons why a site won't show up.

1. Make sure you're looking for it in the correct place.

Clicking on a link? The link may be incorrectly formatted. Try typing your address in the URL bar of your browser instead.

Using a search window or search bar?

If you are trying to find your site in a search engine, take a look here:
Site not showing up in Google?

Do you have a domain name?

Domain Changes

If you have a domain name, it could be the cause of the problem. In that case, please take a look through this topic first:

Domain name and site not appearing

ISP, Network, and Country blockages

ISP Blocks

It can sometimes happen that an ISP blocks access to our IP address. This can be very frustrating. Make sure to read this topic if you suspect your ISP may be blocking your site, or if none of the other possibilities apply.

Inactive Site Deletion

If you cannot view your pages OR log into your account to edit it, it may have been deleted due to inactivity.

This can happen if you have a free account and have not accessed it within the last 60 days. If this is the case, you may create a new Webs account. Unfortunately, the pages and files cannot be restored. In the future, make sure to log into your account at least once every 60 days. Premium accounts are not subject to inactive site deletion, so you may want to get a premium service on the account in order to prevent this problem in the future.

Home Page Not Set

It can sometimes happen that a site will show up but just not at the home page, as there is not a home page set. To check to see if this is your problem, log into your account and in the "edit my site" section, click on the "switch homepage" option. Select a home page there, then publish your pages again.

HTML Mode Users

If you are in HTML mode and you can't find your site, make sure you have a page named index.html - don't use index.htm as this can cause some problems if you ever are switched back to site builder mode.

403 Site Forbidden error

Other Causes

Site frozen - says "please contact Our Abuse Team"

I think my website was hacked!

Some Quick Solutions

It could be that you changed the name of your page without updating the navbar links or you experienced a temporary problem when accessing your site earlier.

Generally, republishing your pages and clearing your browser cache will resolve these problems.

Edit your home page, click to publish the page, then click to publish ALL pages.

Then clear your browser cache. Instructions for that are here:
http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Bro...

If these actions don't resolve your problem, please let us know the address of the page that is not showing up and exactly what you are seeing.

If the problem is somewhat different - the page shows up but doesn't look right, for instance, or you can't access the site builder - do NOT post in this topic. Create a new topic, as the problem is a different problem altogether!

Doesn't answer the problem? Post the question, but include this information:

1. The site address.
2. How you are trying to see the site.
3. What exactly you see.
4. What browser you are using.
5. What your ISP is and what country you are in.

The more details you can provide to us about the problem, what you did before it occurred, and what you have tried to do to fix it, the better we can assist you.

Site showing up but looks strange? This is a different topic altogether. Start here:

  • I’m frustrated
    1
I have many of the same feelings as Jose, above. I have 2 accounts on freewebs/webs, logged into one today, and found that the other is nowhere to be found. Originally it was located at http://www.freewebs.com/online-learning/ . I get periodic emails from Webs about LOTS of things, but never about my site specifically being deleted or inactive or whatever!

What I don't understand is that the site I logged into today has not been logged into in over 60 days, I'm sure, but it is still there. As it would be, I actually have the content saved elsewhere for the site that is still there, but not for the one that was deleted. Why was one account saved and the other possibly deleted?

The site that I am trying to find is http://www.freewebs.com/online-learning/ . I am accessing webs using Internet Explorer 7, and am located in the US. Are you able to locate this account?

Thanks in advance for any help you are able to provide.

  • We do send inactive site deletion notices. I get them myself on my own free accounts that I fail to log into and which also get no visits. Make sure you provide a correct email address when you create an account, and check the spam folder regularly.

Keep in mind that these sites are not only not being logged into, but they are not getting visits, either. If they were getting visits they would not be deleted.

These are only free sites that are subjected to deletion for inactivity. Because Webs has over 20 million ACTIVE free sites, we have a great deal of resources supporting these sites. To also support tens of millions of free sites that are no longer being used would be too great a drain on our resources, and might result in having to charge for ALL sites being created.

I understand your frustration, but keep in mind that we need to balance the desire to provide free services to our users, and the requirements of actually supporting millions of free users in terms of resources.

JES, that account was never actually created. If a site was deleted at some point, we will have a record of it, but there is no record for that one. There is a site with the username http://www.freewebs.com/onlinelearning - without the hyphen.

If you have the email address you used when you created the account, that could assist us in finding the site.

  • I’m disappointed
    1
Hi, I ́m sorry to have used an informal expression to picture my mood that may have sound "profane" but well... Now it ́s been removed and I still haven ́t recieved an answer about it. It really impresses me how my web page was deleted for not logging in whithin 3 months and now it takes you much more time to even see my question. It impresses me exponentially more to see it was just removed and I don ́t even get an answer. Here ́s what I had written (whitout the mood part, it was a polite text):

"I had a freewebs account and I surely haven ́t seen any clause that determined me to login every 60 days. Now the domain name changes, the rules changes and no one sends me an e-mail or anything to let me know. 60 days isn ́t even a reasonable ammount of time, what if I travalled, got kidnapped, or trapped into an underground copper-gold mine? I mean, it ́s totally unfair for you to just delete things like this, specially considering the amount of abandoned junk you can find all over the web. There was no reason for me to login every 60 days. I had a site with some text and images, people would access it from time to time and that was it. It wasn ́t dynamic because it was not meant to be and there was no statement telling me that it should. I just feel sad to see History being murdered this way, even though this is a part of History that nobody cared about anyway. One e-mail and I would have gladly logged in, altough it would feel really stupid to login every 60 days just so that you wouldn ́t delete my content, as if I was a hostage of these nonsensical and arbitrary rules. Please take a look at blogspot or wordpress and see if they do this to peoples ́ memories."

As for what you ́ve told LES above: Do you have my web page files? I would be mastodontically thankfull if I just could have my files and text back... I can even host it somewhere else, really, or even here, you name it, no hard feelings... And I do understand why people are having problems with logins... Webs just swallowed Freewebs and haven ́t actually incorporated the old accounts. I can ́t login with my old username either. My freewebs page was"/fiddlergame", PLEASE let me know if you have my files somewhere. Thanks for the attention and remember what I said: There are inumerous sites like yours who hosts free pages and none of them erase older pages, no matter how low the access rate is. This is History, really, it is, and is also about people ́s memories, as I ́ve said before. It ́s like someone burning your baby pictures just because you haven ́t looked at them for some years. Anyway, hope we can solve this in the best possible way.

    • you sent me no emails of site deletion you only sent me emails about your running out of storage.
    • Our websites have been taken down without noticing us either. We do agree that we did not get many readers, but than people should wonder if it is worth using Free Webs, because on other platforms we are using we are getting much more readers. On one platform according to us on which we do not reach enough readers we still got in one month time 1.340 viewers, and 2.959 since its start on September 2012. Investing time to write on such a platform is in such instance more worth than a Free Webs where with difficulty we get only 3 or 4 views on a writing. How does it come there is such a difference? On a other Forum we are doing much better than Free Webs and Blogger, getting more reactions and more viewers, and that is why we are doing all that work to reach people.
In case people can not be reached by Free Webs it lies perhaps more to that system than to the writers. (Something to chew on.)

  • If my page has been deleted how can I retreive the information on it? Can I reopen it?
    • Eric (Official Rep) March 09, 2011 18:26
I apologize for the inconvenience, but deleted pages are permanently removed and are unable to be recovered or reopened.
    • Why does Free Webs keep sending all the messages and requests for updates when the sites are moved and can not retrieved any more. Do they seriously think the voluntary workers are willing again to spend so much of their free time into a system which can abandon them without any warning, not giving them a notice that the system is going to change or going to close down?

It looked great to have opportunities to have Free web space, because there are enough activities which are not commercial, but still of socio and cultural value and could help or be of importance in the world community.
A commercial organization willing to do something good on that aspect of life deserves respect and recognition for such philanthropy. A pity Free Webs seemed not to continue into that line of offering non-commercial products.

    • I can see your site, but it looks like you copied and pasted from MS Word. This can cause some problems, though not usually like you are describing.

I recommend you start over, using our site builder to create your site. MS Word is not a good way to make a website, as the codes aren't easily read by the browsers.

Okay, maybe you can help me.
    My site is here http://drubaphotography.webs.com/
I have not logged in, and can't, it tells me I am not using the right password so I filled out the lost password form so I can have it sent to my email, so I can log in and delete my site/pages. I have now done this fifteen times with the hope that one time it will actually work, but I have yet to receive a lost password email. All I want is to log in and remove the site. I have tried for months, and have never been able to get anyone to really help me with this. I just want it gone, and my content gone.

I'm having problems on this site I go on. The real owners of the site abandoned it a couple years ago, but now me and some others have been running it, and it's going fine, except for the fact that we can't change anything. And now, when I try to go on the site, it says that the site's been frozen due to bandwidth, can you help? The address is www.freewebs.com/mythologyalive
    • Hi Olive,

Thanks for contacting us. Unfortunately you'll need access to the site to purchase more bandwidth.

Currently I can see that you all have used a total of 2 GB of bandwidth while you're allotment is only 500 MB.

If you do not have access to the email/pw on the account, you will be unable to access. I would strongly suggest contacting the original owners of the site to acquire the original login credentials.

Please let us know if we can provide you with any additional assistance. Thanks!

This is terrible. The website that I had for 4 years got deleted because I didn't log in for 60 days. I did not receive a notice that it would be deleted and I am really upset. These sites are just permanently deleted? This breaks my heart...I'm sorry webs but I don't think I will be coming back. That was a great memory you just deleted. And without my permission.

I never got a notice that my website would be deleted. NEVER. And I save EVERYTHING. Had I gotten one, I would have made a point of putting it on my calendar to visit the site once a month because it was a record of a difficult time in my son's life. OR I would have saved the pages as .pdf files to have as a memory. The other difficult thing about finding the site missing is that a much older site I created that hasn't been viewed in a long time is still available. I just don't even know what to say. I guess I put too much trust in your company. I'm going to go now and try to preserve my other site before that goes away too.

  • I’m frustrated and mad
    1
what I'm being told here is that, having taken all the trouble to create a website, albeit, 'free', and then getting it stable, if I don't log into it for 60 days (why should I if it is stable and I am happy with it), it will be deleted. Furthermore, I DID NOT GET any notification that my website would be deleted in this high-handed way.

I have a second website that is now mature, with many users/members which is stable and doing a great service to its community. Am I to understand that the months and months of hard work that went into building it will now be thrown away if i don't log onto to it for 60 days - because it is a stable site?

As you did not notify me of my first website (QBBQ) being taken down, I would appreciate it if you would be good enought to restore it. Thank you.

    • I concur I did never receive an email regarding my account being deleted. I think it is pretty message up that I spent an entire semester on a website and that ticker hits 60 and the entire account is deleted, not just the website! I did NOT receive notification of this occurring.
    • It seems ridiculous when people get a stable website they should continuously log in. Why not having it running for long time? What would be the difference between a 'website' and a 'blog'?
A matter of politeness would also be that the person in charge of the website would be notified enough days before they close or freeze the website.

  • I’m Betrayed
I understand that you have a tremendous number of active free websites, and I now see that when the decision to delete is made on inactive sites, you will not offer the option to retreive them- AT ALL. However, I think you should have much more of a warning while creating a new site. It is a typical practice that archives are maintained on websites, so just indicating that a site will be deleted is not really enough. Having been through this experience with your website process, I can definitely say more emphasis/highlighting of this very serious limitation is needed.

Perhaps you can offer a paid retrieval service for the lost free ones? This seems reasonable to me as the work often will be worth a fee if we really do care about it. Aren't you required to maintain a copy of these sites for official/government investigations, for some time beyond when you delete them? Are you in violation of applicable federal law here?

In my case, I also had problems with my primary email for some time, so another consideration might be a secondary email. another solution might be to be able to backup the website on our own media. It could still be limited so we have to use your software to retrieve it. This would give the individuals the burnden on storage space, which is what I imagine the main issue is.

Your web creation software is very nice, but as I see things now, I would warn people not to go near your services, mainly because I don't feel I can trust the way you handle important aspects of site support - whether it is free or not. Its a serious disservice to hide behind a lack of a fee and then completely trash the efforts individuals may put into a website. This makes me question the judgment calls made in your paid support as well.

  • Hi - I have a question about valid URLs. We used to use & give out this URL:

    http://www.hopechurchnurseryschool.we...

It had been working fine for years; it's what Google has indexed for us.

Recently it stopped working. No site settings were changed. Now the only url that works is this one (without the www)

    http://hopechurchnurseryschool.webs.com/

I thought the www shouldn't matter when a URL resolves. Please help and advise. Thanks!
