Recently we've made some changes to our System Of Member Notifications.
Check out our main topic HERE to find out more.
We understand that some users prefer our older system of Notifications. In We'd like to open up the platform for ideas.
Feel free to comment here with Ideas and Recommendations which you think would be beneficial to both you and your users!

I'd like to be able to control the invite system myself also. People are spammed to join my site, then they are spammed again to complete their profile. They are spammed with notification of new blog comments. I don't even have any input over what these emails say. As the site owner, I feel that anything that is sent from my site should be sent by me, with my approval.
-
I would like the ability to turn off email notifications of new blog comments to non-members.
Members have the ability to turn off email notifications from their profile. Non-members do not. This means whenever someone leaves a blog comment, they get notified of every blog comment after theirs. If there are a hundred comments, they get a hundred emails. This is shocking and annoying to most people, and causes them to never return, and not become a member.
I'm aware that some people enjoy these emails, so I propose giving the commenter a choice before they submit their comment--something like this:
Forcing everyone to become a member, and having to sign in to leave a comment, is not a good solution.
If you want this too, please click I like this idea.

Turn Off Email Notifications of New Blog Comments to Non-Members. -
NOTE: I have read through literally every post in this thread, including that from webs.com employees.
While I appreciate that the notification service does cause a heavy burden on server, this is a service we were expecting to and continue to pay for. Notifications were also one of the key reasons I recommend we move my club site over to webs.com. With this shortfall now I am forced to go back to the club and rescind my recommendation and unfortunately now have to find a way to take everything off to convert to another provider. This is very disappointing.
I urge webs.com to please listen to your customers and find a resolution to this ASAP. -
I would like to see some--not all--notification options that had been in place be restored during this interim time while Webs works out its future plans for the notification options.
I understand that the quantity of notifications that were being sent before was overwhelming the servers--point taken. Webs made it clear that some kind of change had to occur. However, my perception is that Webs took an all-or-nothing approach to the problem.
Did all of the notification options--immediate, daily, and weekly--really need to be removed in order to bring the use of servers to a more balanced level? Why not eliminate the immediate notification option, and analyze the effect that would have on your servers to see whether it would be reasonable to keep the daily and weekly options in place? I have to believe that the vast majority of people--both site owners and members--would rather have daily and weekly notifications than nothing at all.
And, if having daily notifications proves to be too taxing on your servers, then eliminate daily notifications and at least keep the weekly notifications. Are your servers not able to send only weekly notifications without any problem?
I don't remember what all of the exact options had been before they were removed, but my point is that they didn't all have to be removed, did they? This is a situation where, for many sites, something is better than nothing at all. I, for one, would be grateful to at least have a weekly notification that would provide a "weekly digest" for my site members. At least then my members would be sent a message once a week that would remind them--"hey, don't forget about our site, and this is what's happened this week"--and the fact that it would be automated would remove a major burden on site owners, the burden of having to manually create a message that provides a synopsis of the activity from the entire week. That's not a quick and easy task for many site owners.
Webs, does it really have to be all-or-nothing? -
Dom, we appreciate that you have replied. But the crux is, what is being done about this?
-
An advanced warning, of at least a few weeks, should have been given to provide Site Owners the time needed to figure out a plan for communicating notices of new information on their sites to their site members and visitors, or to switch to a different company's platform/hosting service.
Many Site Owners have made it clear that the removal of the notifications feature has decimated the level of activity on, and visitation to, their sites. For people who relied on the notifications feature to maintain communication with customers and clients, it may even be detrimental to their business.
Even if the notifications feature was only working correctly part of the time, it was still of some value to many Site Owners. The comments by people in this thread have made that clear. Why has the feature been removed before a suitable replacement is ready?
In the future, when Webs plans to reduce the functionality of the Webs platform--by eliminating features such as the notification preferences--Webs should notify Site Owners prior to making the changes. When Webs does not provide advanced warning for such changes, it is an indication that Webs doesn't understand the importance of providing its own customers with time to prepare for the ramifications of the changes. There is no reasonable excuse for not giving your customers advanced notice of these changes. -
I would like to give one big vote to returning to the previous notification system especially in terms of notifying members of new blog and forum posts. My website is for a neighborhood of 60 homes. In our relatively small neighborhood, people don't post messages all that often. There isn't much motivation for people to continually check the site for new forum posts or blog posts. Having these notifications gives members a way to send a type of blast e-mail to all of the other members of the site by way of posting a message in the forum or in the blog. Now members don't have any way to do this. I thought the receive messages instantly, daily, weekly, or never options were perfect for controlling these messages on the receiving end. I have a Tool Sharing forum for example. I posted a message saying that I was looking for a ladder for a weekend project. Someone responded two months after I posted the message because he just happened to come across it. By then I didn't need the ladder anymore. We have a Safety forum as well where people can report thefts or vandalism. If one or two people post a message about their cars getting broken into, that message should get out to everyone as soon as possible! not when someone happens to see it long after the fact.
I don't think it is necessary for all members to be informed of all website content changes. I make minor changes to my website all the time and wouldn't want everyone to get notified every time I fix the spelling of a word on a page or change the grammar in some sentence. -
I have written several times requesting that WEBS re-consider and re-instate the notification system that allows ALL new content to generate a notification to members. For those who may find this somewhat onerous, they should have the option of changing the frequency with which they get notified or completely unsubsrcibing. It was this feature that attracted me to WEBS to start with because my site became virtually self-sustaining because of continual changes in content on the site. And as owner I did not have to send out blasts or add the content myself. Think of this way....compare a website to a newspaper. Would you keep reading the same newspaper from day to day. Of course not! Same with websites. But people have to know that new content has been posted so they will re-visit. My site will die without this feature.
In the last couple of days I have tried to do a workaround by using the RSS feed on my Blog page to become the notifcation generator but it only works if the blog is uprotected and only with Firefox and Safari not IE which most of my members use.
I understand that WEBS was encountering problems with the notification process and that is why they suspended the feature; but as a paying subscriber to WEBs I have to say that I am really ticked!
-
Please, please PLEASE reconsider and allow the user-led notifications back. My site is completely dead since they were removed.
Most of my users want to keep in touch with the new content but do not have the time or inclination to regularly visit the site. So a user-led option to sign up for daily or weekly summary email of new content is absolutely vital. It's why we chose webs.com.
We have invested lot of time in building the site and some funds on marketing promotion. But now this is going to waste as no-one is visiting the site. We are all incredibly frustrated and wondering if we need to change web platforms.
We would much rather webs.com have a rethink about their offer. Removing a key part of what we chose webs.com for is not good customer orientation.
We realise you have some real issues which is why you took this move. But there must be a halfway house. At the very least please let users sign-up for a weekly email of new content on the site. A daily option too would be preferable.
Please, please reconsider. -
Hey Guys,
Thanks again for all of your comments on this topic. We sincerely appreciate the feedback!
Please continue to let us know what features you miss! We're taking note of all of these ideas. We hear you! :-)
Thanks again!

I'd like to see notifications when someone posts a new topic into the forum (in any category, and see which category it is, with a direct link to it) and when someone replies to a topic (same with that too).
I also agree with "3- Only send one notification of a post on your comment (not everyone after) " or make the options "subscribe to this topic" and "unsubscribe to this topic" . -
-
I would be happy with members choosing between weekly notification or no notification. Anything is better than nothing. I don't want to spam my members. Maybe they could even choose which apps they receive notifications on (forum, blog, comments, ect). No matter what, members should always be notified of new Private Messages. Personally, I am really only concerned with Forum, PM, and Comment notifications. Consider what it would be like trying to run this forum without notifications to yourselves or members. The only reason I'm here is because of a notification ...

My comment probably won't be a popular one here but I think it's important to share that the voices here do not reflect all of the Webs users. There are several participating here who are very passionate about bringing back the notification system. However, there were equally as many passionate people on the other side of the debate when we were operating on that system and begging for it to be removed. I was one of them.
I was thrilled when the notification system was changed and my page views and participation and sales have dramatically increased since that point. I just reached 100,000 page views this week. Before that, I was losing members and angering others because of the constant email notifications. There are times I have 40-70 comments on a blog topic and no one wants to receive that many notifications in their inbox. At that time, I was told by a Webs employee that I can instruct the members how to change their notification settings. But, that is a hassle that some would rather not deal with and it also didn't help the non-members who commented on my site. At the time, I was greatly frustrated and considering moving my blog elsewhere. Since reading through this topic, I can appreciate the value it had for smaller sites where there were fewer participants such as the neighborhood watch site. No other blog server that I know of has our old type of notification system. I know that that was a drawing factor for many here but, on the other hand, being different in this area can be a real pain to many bloghoppers who have never had to encounter so many notifications in their inbox before.
I think a compromise would be great and I really like Laurjen1's suggestion about the checkbox right after submitting a blog comment. Having to go into someone's profile and change settings is too overwhelming for people who are not real computer saavy to begin with and too much of a hassle for busy individuals who don't want to take the time. I really like Laurjen1's suggestion. Thanks!- view 1 more comment

Can't agree more, in order to satisfy all sides, its better to have the checkbox that mentioned above so all will be happy

Yup. Web owners can choose whether or not to offer notifications. If so, members can choose frequency. If INSTANTANEOUS or EVERY 3 HOURS overloads the servers, don't offer that option. Maybe Daily or Weekly. Seems like a done deal . . .

i dont know if im in the right spot, im relatively new to webs and being a website owner etc. i would like to receive a notification when something has been purchased from my store. I get a reciept/invoice from paypal, but alot of my customers arent comfortable using paypal or google, so i give the option of direct bank deposit, although this is quite painful for me, as i have to ask my customers to email or call to get the details and then i have to come up with a system for tracking who is who and who bought what, how many they want and what colour etc i dont want my customers to be swamped with emails when they buy something, so maybe webs could look into giving us more webstore payment options, such as bank tranfer, or even a COD option.
-
Wrong spot, but yeah - purchase notification is needed. Not sure if you are a Free or Premium user, but even as a Premium user you still won't get notifications or inventory tracking (still gotta' pay more for that). The only thing I sell is shirts - the first shirt listed is LARGE - if LARGE sells out, it appears that all shirts are sold out. A few of the infinite kicks in the face you will get from Webs.com. Get out while you can . . .

The old notification system used to be as illustrated below
Because of server overload, WEBS had to remove this "Notification" option. and it created a lot of angst for people like me who rely on members being advised of new content.
Since then, I have copied the RSS link for my blog page and added a link in my Settings which reads, "Click here if you want to receive notification of a new blog entry"
If member clicks there, depending on what browser they are using, it will allow them to subscribe to the RSS feed. I did it his way because many folks do not understand what RSS at the bottom right ofthe Blog page means.
Check out my site to try it www.letsgoboat.com

There are many people who refuse or are reluctant to join my website because of the reputation of the bajillions of emails sent every day. I think there should be email notifications (for forum and blog posts and comments, video and picture posts and comments, etc.) to specific members about content that was posted on. We should be able to choose if certain notifications should be automatic or only if we approve it.

Good, point, David. I'll clarify. There is a simple way around that problem. That is to put a toggle box at the end of each post submission with the option that reads (Check box) "Send me an email when someone replies to this thread" or something to that effect.
NING.com has that option on its social networking templates. I forget exactly how it is worded, but it allows a person to choose to get email when someone replies to their post or to the thread, or not. A person can toggle the box off any time they wish to discontinue receiving emails from that thread. This allows people to get as little or as much email as they wish--including none at all--from the discussion boards on a NING.com site.
It works very well. Thanks for pointing out this issue. Fortunately, this is an easy way to address it, to please everyone! -

I think WEBS should send a survey every month asking the site owners (via email) what they would like to see next. Maybe offer 3 or 4 ideas and allow each person to pick 1. The top vote is the next project. Every month we should see something new that improves WEBS or maybe more. I have looked and I couldn't help but notice there are dozens of ideas "under consideration" in these topics. In a way I feel like we the people are not being heard.
Here are a few ideas we should be asked to vote on. I would like to see all of them. Sorry if these ideas are already posted :
*Unlimited bandwidth! - I can afford to double my bandwidth every year and I'm getting over thousands of visitors a day on my site. As a result I had to remove photos due to this limit, which is bad for my business. There are only a few hosting providers these days that limit bandwidth. This isn't the 1990s with dial up anymore. Webs needs to compete more with other companies. This forces us to leave Webs and go elsewhere.
*Email notifications sent from our domains - When I send an email out to my members it says its from "messages@webs.com". It should be our domain name. For example my website is www.k-9clan.com so when I send emails it should say from "noreply@k-9clan.com". Many times people tell me they didn't get my email because they deleted it, unaware it was from me.
*Photos on members profiles - There is a tab on profiles but no way to upload photos! I have it where everyone is a limited member. If they want to upgrade to a regular membership level, they can pay and we change it for them. That is one of the "perks" of becoming a regular member on our site. our "regular" members have to upload pictures on our "photos" page and then it says on their profile that they upload a photo but it should show the picture on their profile.
*SSL Certificates - This is pretty simple and should need no explanation. Make our members feel safe. 90% of the time people won't buy from a site with no SSL or other security measures. I cant even get SSL from GoDaddy because CRS (or something like that - I forget what its called)
*Members only menu - Make it where you can only see the pages that are public in the navibar menu. There is no point in listing 20 pages if only 4 of them are public pages. When they join your site they will be able to see all the pages listed, as long as they are logged in.
*Members control their profile views - Members should have the option to choose who can see their profile rather it be admin only, friends, only, website members only, or anyone (public)
*Members referrals - It should show on a members profile who they referred to the site. I'm all about rewarding people that help my business grow. This way we can reward our top members who recruit new members.
* Virtual achievements - Custom task for members. We can create certain task like log in every day for a week or refer 5 members to our site and they get different achievements posted on their profile. This will help us keep our members active!
*See what members are logged in - This would be nice to know in real-time who is logged in my website and what page they are on.
*Ban members by IP address - I can delete members but then they can rejoin. We should have the power to block members by IP address. Along with this, we should choose if they see a message saying that they are banned.
*Webs credits for each member - Lets face it that we could all use more Webs credits. Not every site can be a huge hit on the net but we should get credits for getting members. Not only does this encourage us to make great sites and get members but this also helps webs attract potential new customers.
Please let me know your thoughts on my ideas. Hopefully we can at least vote on topics and make them happen! Webs, please listen to the people! Send us a monthly email with votes.-
Great ideas!

After reading through a majority of comments, and having my own personal problems I am suggesting that WEBS takes into careful consideration the idea of bringing back notifications. It is something that allows sites to flourish as mine and others sites have been dead since notifications have been altered. Give members the option to receive notification email when sites are updated or there are new posts rather than just receiving emails when something they post is commented on. PLEASE RECONSIDER THIS IS IMPERATIVE TO MANY SITES SUCCESS!!
-
Also if you "hear" us as you say then PLEASE PLEASE make the changes!

Yes..I had to relocate my site due to no notifications. It may seem minimal but it makes a huge difference when your site is built around that aspect
-
-
Notifications would be great. I'd even understand if I had to upgrade my site to get it. Let's face it, people don't always just go to a site. They are driven there by an e-mail a lot of times. Is adding notifications anywhere on the horizon?
-
-
Please enable the option of receiving notifications via email, once a new comment is posted to the forum thread.
E.g
I created a thread in the forum app. When some replies to my thread, it will be nice to receive a notification via email saying that someone replied to your thread.
Similarly when I replied to someone else post in the thread, I wish to receive a notification.
Again and again, it is being pointed out that the forum app is in much need of enhancement.

It says it is planned and the second last comment I see is 7 months old.
Can someone please reply and guess how much time is required to implement this feature. Honestly websites are becoming dead just because no notifications are being sent. -

More Options For Members!.
I want an easier way for members to interact! I own a social networking website on webs.com,(worldchain.webs.com) and I want members to be able to customize there profiles! Maybe some ideas...
-Let them customize the background of there profiles!
-Maybe members could make one of there friends a favorite (star them) so its easier to access in the friends tab.
- Have a place on there profile where they can update friends by sharing videos and pictures.
-Also, sending a private message to a member that no one else can see!
-I looked at a post 3 years ago that said you were working on making the picture and video thing and yet, NO PROGRESS.
Please Legacy Webs, do SOMETHING about this. I know it is hard, but 3 years? Come on. Thanks for your time. Now who's with me?
P.S My social networking website is worldchain.webs.com -

Hi. I tested the Live Chat to ask why there is no forum notification. Forum notification is a driver to make a web active. I was very happy when I found the notification tick box about notification but the happiness was short when finding out that it is only for blog. Sorry, I must ask if you are serious? Live Chat answered that they do not have any info and wished me a nice day. I can see when I google that I am not alone with my opinion that forum notification is a base service needed.

Calendar Update Notification?.
Is there any way that when an event is added or changed in the calendar that the member mailing list could receive a notification e-mail, providing the change? -

Calendar Events Notifications.
Hello, I was wondering about the notifications that webs offered in the website and not much came up. Only that the owner can receive notifications when a new member joins and/or wants to join, and on members comments. There is no notification, neither to the owner or like an e-mail blast that would send to all automatically if an event is added in the calendar or change is made in the calendar. I am very interested in this idea because the website I am personally developing is for a tourism company, which makes continuously updates to their calendar and wish that every employee is updated of the changes. Please do let me know if anything like this could ever be possible or maybe something as similar as possible. This is the e-mail I am using for the webs.com site, that still I have note bought a domain, but it is definitely something on my to-do-list.

It is almost outrageous that Webs have a forum were we get notified about updates, but when I ask webs for the same thing for our web, Silence is the only answer.
WEBS. I suggest that you remove the notification function also on this forum. By that is would probably lost every life, and you can sunset it.
Or, you can listen on the one that actually pay for using the service, and (re-)add the notification again, your customers really need it.
Thanks in advance.

How come nobody cares about these claims??
We need assistance and responses and no one comes to aid!
Anybody attending these matters? -

Apparently they do not care anymore for notifications because no one has paid any kind of attention to our claims and worries!

Hello:
I was wondering where were we on the notifications follow-up? It has been almost a month and still no response or reason for our requests. Please do let me know as soon as anybody hear anything!
Thank You very much.

Should the Members app be updated in the future, we will definitely consider these requests. However, we do not have any current plans to update the Members app.

The forum definitely needs the option for notifications via email when a new topic or cmment is posted ! When there is not much content, you cant expect members to log in all the time, so how should the know if there is a new question/comment ? If I had known the forum does not have this option I'd have created my website with an other service than Webs. Please add this option !
