I’m panicky and nervous!

Wen Causes Hair to Fall Out?!? That Can't Be True!

Why are there quite a few people saying that after using the hair product for quite some time, their hair is falling out leaving bald areas and thinning hair after using Wen? Many of these people have been long-term users of the Wen cleansing conditioners, and as much as I LOVE the way my hair looks and feels (can't stop touching it), I don't want to become a victim of losing my hair! This is the first time I've ever had beautiful hair! So please, explain why they say this.

  • Hello Cher!

On average, people lose about 75-100 strands of hair a day. This is how your scalp works. It's the same with your eyelashes. When hair is either too dry or too damaged, your scalp will purge this hair to make room for healthy hair growth. Prior to using the cleansing conditioners, shampoo leaves your hair knotted and tangled, even while in the shower. Because of this, most of your natural hair loss was done during the day, which is why people are so used to finding strands of hair on their clothing and pillows/sheets. People referred to this as "shedding".

With the cleansing conditioners, because your hair does not tangle while cleansing, you generally only see the strands going down the drain and not on your pillows, sheets and clothes, which can be a little alarming! As your hair and scalp get healthier with continued use, you should notice less and less hair, since your scalp will no longer need to get rid of "unhealthy" hair since it will be healthy!

There are a number of things that contribute to hair loss. Diet, stress, medication, hereditary, hormonal changes, pregnancy, childbirth, lack of sleep, et cetera. Unfortunately, when people notice hair loss they automatically assume it is our product line even when this is not the case. Our products should only ever help promote healthy hair growth while also preventing hair loss and thinning. Chaz Dean himself has used the product for over a decade, and as you can see, he has a full head of bouncy, healthy, manageable, shiny hair (as do the rest of us that have been consistently using the products for years). Unless you are having an allergic reaction of some sort, our products will only ever benefit your scalp and your hair. I'm sorry for the confusion! I hope this helps.

I used Wen for 2 years and my hair began falling out about 3 months ago. I had a consultation and it was the Wen- it's a deep CLEANSING conditioner- to be used only a couple of time a week at most. I switched to a pro shampoo/conditioner and no hair breakage or loss. Who knew???

  • Just to elaborate further, there is nothing in WEN that "cause" hair loss. Though anyone can have an allergic reaction to ingredients in our products as well as others, our testing that we do on every product has not shown an incidence of allergic reaction. We do monitor the various boards where people discuss hair loss, but we are rarely contacted directly about this issue. The few times we have been, of those people that told us their doctor said WEN caused it, none of them have allowed us to contact their doctors to verify. One of the common things that can cause hair loss in a condition called telogen effluvium, and that can be triggered by many things and is generally a temporary condition and I suspect that is most often the culprit. However we are not doctors, and we can only do so much on our own. We do all of the necessary allergen and skin testing required and to date that has not shown that WEN causes any problems whatsoever.

As always we are more than willing to assist anyone experiencing hair loss they believe to be caused by WEN, and we would particularly love to hear form anyone who is willing to help us look further into it.
    • Craig,
YOU can contact me about my hair loss after using WEN! I have suffered hair loss and breakage! I have been using WEN for about 8 months. Thought I was using a safe & healthy product! Saw my Drs. and all tests are normal, nothing in my recent blood work or physical that would point to hair loss!
Never made the connection to WEN until I MADE my POOR husband use it , thinking I was doing a good thing! THEN, he suffered hair loss!!!!!!! So TODAY, I googled WEN & Hair loss! I was floored when I saw the MANY complaints of Hair Loss and WEN! Many were told by dermatologists that WEN causes blocked hair follicles. What is most alarming is that people have reported that their hair still has not returned to normal even after stopping the use of WEN! I find that disturbing! They also said that reported that to the FDA
    • Started using Wen cleansing Conditioner about 6 or 7 months ago, I bought a package deal on QVC now my thin hair is even thinner and my son says you can see a bald spot in the back! I am going to stop using it.

  • Also, of the the people stating that the hair loss stopped after returning to shampoo...I doubt they are following the same process of combing the shampoo/conditioner through their hair as when using the WEN, so they are not seeing the loss with shampoo if they tried to do this. They are comparing apples to oranges if they do not do this.

  • I’m happy
Actually, when I started using WEN, I had less hair loss. I comb my hair with a wide tooth comb in the shower with conditioner and likewise with WEN. My head did start itching, but then it did with shampoo and conditioner, too. In a panic, I did wash my scalp with a shampoo and then proceeded to use WEN as a conditioner....not quite the same though, but justifies the needed clarifying qualities, especially on the scalp, with the frequency level decided upon per individual. I read that the Cucumber/Aloe is clarifying??? My hair is colored and below bra hook in back (and I am 56)....while my hair is fine, there is a lot of it and naturally wavy/curly (kinky/frizzy if I let dry naturally...dries smooth if put in rollers or put into a bun)....so I consider myself very lucky, especially at my age. I've always had a problem with my hair being so dry and feeling like straw, even though I never use appliances on my hair and haven't for years....WEN changed that. My daughter gave me "too little" to try of the Almond Mint, but even so, what a difference...wonderful enough for me to buy. I purchased the Lavender but am wondering for clarifying qualities that I should also have on hand the Cucumber/Aloe?

  • Hello Cher!
If I may ask, exactly how many TOTAL pumps of the cleansing conditioner are you using when you cleanse? Also, what size bottle of the cleansing conditioner are you using? Please let me know so that I may assist you.

    • I have lost hair in my crown. It used to be thick and now I have a small bald spot after using Wen for 2 months.
    • Well, this is Cher, and as you can see I wrote my concerns six months ago....I am still using Wen exclusively today and LOVE IT! I did sneak in "one time" a regular shampooing and conditioning, as I forgot to bring my Wen, and OMG, my hair dried right out!!! I will admit that my scalp just did not feel really clean at first using the Almond-Mint or Lavender, which I do love....I discovered that using Tea Tree on the scalp and another flavor like Lavender or Almond Mint over the rest of my hair solved my oilier-than-the-rest-of-my-hair problem. My hair is still thick, and I am 56 years old. I wear my hair very long and layered. I color my hair (have to-100% white) and Wen does not strip out the color, so it stays fresh looking longer. It is important to leave Wen in 7 to 10 minutes for the best results and conditioning.....I've even left it in with a towel on my head and rinsed out much later.

I have posted on this already, but I have found the opposite, Wen promotes healthy hair growth and does not cause hair loss. Using tea tree products have made all the difference for me. Hope you try them and find the same.

I noticed some hair coming out when I first started using Wen (normal amount 75-100 hairs). I have been using Wen for 2 months. Now, I have only a few hairs that come out (5-6). I think this product is good for your hair. My hair is also growing really fast.

  • I have to admit that one of the reasons I waited so long to try WEN is that I had read some of the stories about hair loss. My hair is already thin, so that scared me a bit. A friend at work, who also has thin hair, started using WEN a few months ago and absolutely loves it. She gave me some to try (Sweet Almond Mint). I went to the website to check the ingredients; I couldn't see that any of those ingredients could possibly cause hair loss. We all go through periods of time when we seem to lose more hair. I seem to lose more hair in the spring than any other time of year. Also, when I'm under a lot of stress, I sometimes experience more hair loss, but it comes back. I've been using WEN for just a couple of weeks -- so far, I see no unusual hair loss.

  • I’m anxious
Hi there i first saw the advert for Wenn hair products while i was on holiday in florida Orlando in September 2012

I thought thats it i will wait until i get home and go on the internet.

I am debs 44, and have had grey hair since a young age.

I love my hair usually, its a sharp bob style.

I havent got good health, even so before my chronic pain started, my hair is thick, and in good condition

I would love to use the products, i have itchy scalp, its driving me mad.

What i would like to know please shampoo makes yr hair clean, conditioner makes it go soft, how does it take the dirt out

    Kind regards

    Debs frndom England
    • Hi its me i am writing under my page, because i couldnt find where to write. I have never had anything go wrong with my hair, i am under the doctor, now, and i cant use any other shampoo for a while. My hair is so itchy that i tangle my hair around my fingers while i am sleep, and i am pulling it out, why i know this, is because Mike is telling mein the morning.

I have started to use tea tree, with tar in. I have grey hair, Mike says to me, you will go bald in places, its scaring me, because i have tried so many shampoos.

I would love to go for Wenn, but i need to know how does the conditioner wash it, i know it makes it go soft and shiny, as people say it, but does it clean it too.

I have more strands of hair come out of me at night, double the amount i would think, u wouldnt notice on my hair because i have thick grey hair.

Has any one got any ideal at all how to help, the conditioner isnt cheap is it, and i just dont like the ideal of it coming every month, i cant afford it if i am been honest.

Happy New Year to you all

      lov debs
    • I just purchased Wen and have used it three times. My scalp keeps tingling as though all the mint will not come out. I also researched the ingredientMethylisothiazolinone, andMethychlorosothiazolinone and found it's Function: Preservative.
Present in: Many cosmetics and personal care products, read labels. Restricted in Canada and Japan.
Health concerns: Immune system toxicant; animal studies show restricted growth of the axons and dendrites of immature nerves, neurotoxicity and positive mutation results; can lead to a malfunction in the way neurons communicate with each other; especially detrimental to a developing nervous system.
So I don't think I will use it again. Want more info look up the dirty thirty ingredients in shampoo and cosmetics.

All the money I spent on Wen. Plus, not just this site, many sites with many people losing hair after using Wen cannot be a coincidence

I experienced hair loss while using Wen, so quit using it a few months ago. I continued to lose hair, so I thought perhaps I needed to adjust my medication since I take Synthroid for hypothyroidism. My initial blood work looked normal, so again I blamed the hair loss on Wen. I did more research on my own. I am 54 years old and in menopause; I learned that hormone changes can cause hair loss. I am now on Progesterone cream which seems to bring some relief from hot flashes and has also helped lesssen hair loss. My thyroid blood work had looked normal, but I pressed on for more testing, asking the doctor to check my Free T3 and Reverse T3. My T3 was actually low, and that can also cause hair loss.

I am now on Progesterone cream for menopause symptoms, and medication for low T3. Finally, after months of hair loss, the situation is getting better.

For me, I actually had medical issues causing the hair loss. Wen did not cause my hair loss.

    • Hi there i am under the doctor for my really itchy scalp, it drives me mad its not dirty either, i am asleep and my hubby says my arm goes up in the air, and i am putting my hair wrapped around my fingers and pulling my hair out.

I asked my doctor shall i use normal shampoos, he said leave them a alone for a while, i get hairs in the sink or bath when i have washed it, i thought that was normal gives it growth for new hair to come through.

I have never suffered with itchy scalp, any ideals please help, let me know i am 44

Happy holidays to you. Yes, I am still using Wen. I have used it exclusively for seven months now. I still love it. My hair is just as thick now as it was when I started using it. I still shed 10-20 hairs in the shower when I cleanse. I consider this normal shedding for me. I have not noticed that my hair is getting thinner at all. I still use it on my kids, too. They don't shed hardly any hair. My hair looks really healthy and is growing very fast. My hair is the longest it has been in 15 years. Glad to hear from you. :)

  • Hilary, I will keep you posted. I'm also scheduled to consult with a dermatologist in January to see if I have any scalp issues that need to be addressed.

I just feel badly that I blamed Wen for my hair loss before checking into my own health issues. If anyone else is experiencing hair loss and blaming it on Wen, I would strongly suggest a thorough medical checkup with blood work. There are no ingredients in Wen that can cause hair loss. My hairstylist (with 20+ years of training and experience) assured me of that.

  • Kristen Diff Keane~ DON"T USE IT! It is HAIR LOSS in a bottle!!!!!

WEN has no intention of addressing the HAIR LOSS issues, as far as I can see. What is most disturbing is that some people have reported that their hair still didn't come back even after they STOPPED using WEN, one person said she stopped using it over 2 yrs. ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I EVER thought this would have caused any issue what so ever, I would have NEVER purchased it and used it! NOT ever! I feel terrible that my gifts of WEN caused harm to my friends & family, because I gave WEN to them as Christmas gifts!

I bought WEN thinking I was doing something GOOD for myself, as it was chemical FREE! I thought I was using something NATURAL and SAFE! I have suffered Hair Loss and WEN has not answered ANY of my calls or posts here or on facebook! I called the Attny. General and the Federal Trade commission today! They were VERY helpful. I was told that there are several class action law suits pending.

I never made the connection that it was the WEN causing my hair loss, until this past weekend when I learned that everyone I gave it to for Christmas ALSO LOST HAIR, including my poor husband!!!!!!!! I insisted that he ONLY use WEN and now he has bald spots! My daughter and best friend ALSO have bald spots after using WEN.

I Googled WEN & Hair Loss and was FLOORED! Most of the complaints were RIGHT on QVC's customer blog which is where where I purchased it! Also ,when I called to cancel my QVC order, I told the operator my story and she said, "YES, I hear a lot of people say this causes hair loss! " REALLY??????? Why are you still selling it then? UNREAL!
    • Please contact me so we can discuss further what has happened to u. I am about to loose it! i i wish there was aplace on here to post pics all of my long pieces of hair r gone and after seeing ur post im so worried my hair will never grow back the stuff the derm.gave me doesnt seem to be helping and im loosing aywhere from 200 to 400 hairs daily . • I just purchased wen today. I should have read reviews first. I tried to cancel and they told me I can't I am terrified to try it now soo I guess I got to wait to get it then call and get my money back. Does anyone recommend a different conditioner that will leave hair soft but not greasy I have dry hair..
    • Purador ( which you can find online) has a wonderful list of organic shampoos. I am going to try them as I just sent my Wen products back because of the toxic chemicals in them, and the fact that so many people are loosing their hair. I will be sure to research the products next time as my skin is the largest organ on my body. I hope this works for you Rebecca.
    • By the way, they did the same to me. I read about people loosing their hair, so I called to cancel three days later, and they said product was already on its way. I recieved it more than a week later, and I didn't even get the package I ordered. Must have been sent from China.
