I’m pissed off

Didn't ask for your service but got charged for it anyways!

I just looked at my last phone bill and saw a charge for this product. Somehow this company was able to charge me for something I didn't want, didn't use and never asked for. I've been charge since Sept 2009 for this service and my cell provider was only able to credit me for 3 months. As far as I'm concerned, WHERE owes me 6 more months of a refund since I NEVER asked for this product! You are despicable!

    Hi Krista,
I apologize for the confusion. WHERE is a subscription based service preloaded on certain devices. On these devices users must hit "accept" to a terms of service page when they first open the application that explains the subscription fee. All billing is then done through the service provider and is out of our hands. Contacting you're service provider is the only way to discuss and modify billing. I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you.
    All best,

    • I also call Bull - this is a sneaky app. Installed with the operating system, so can't be removed. And I checked the terms of service, and the fact that it is a subscription service is not clear at all.
    • I am very sorry that WHERE has let you guys down in any way. Our app is preloaded onto certain devices with certain carriers because they thought (and we did too!) our service would be useful to their customers, whether they're looking for someplace to eat lunch or the cheapest gas station.

To cancel the WHERE service you can follow Jennie's instructions above, or AT&T customers can call 800-331-0500 to get a refund. If you are unsatisfied with the WHERE app I encourage you to let us and AT&T know why or even suggest an alternative that you like better. In the end our goal is to provide the best tools and services to you guys to make your lives easier.

For those of you who say you've been resubscribed after canceling service (with AT&T), I'm also very sorry. I can't figure out how that happens because once you cancel service, the WHERE app simply won't work. However, there must be some bug, which I will make sure gets looked into. In order to be absolutely sure you aren't resubscribed, you can put a purchase or parental block on the account, like Julie (below) did. Doing so prevents all third-party apps from billing you, so you'll never see a charge from us.

If you have anymore questions, comments, complaints, suggestions don't hesitate to contact us on twitter (http://twitter.com/where), facebook (http://facebook.com/WHEREapp) or via email support@where.com.
      Thanks.

Yeah, this app is on the AT&T HTC Aria, and I was reading through the terms and conditions and my finger slipped. I am not joined up.

I find it funny that you can slide your finger and have to pay for this, but to cancel it, you have to call up your service provider - no button just to cancel.

No way to see what you're subscribed to either. Don't let your kid get near this thing...

Why isn't there a "pissed off" option for "how does this make you feel?"

i was charged $2.99 too. telling us to read the TOS is a cop out. no one ever reads those. can you imagine if EVERY SINGLE APP had you getting charged in their TOS? pure and simple. this is a RIP OFF and borderline scam.

this company is a HUGE scam. having the stupid application preloaded onto your phone AND then charging you for the service? NO THANK YOU!!! by the way, the applications for this company are listed as 'free' on application sites. WTF?!

  • Christina,

The application is free on some phones for some carriers. It is free on android for Verizon and iPhone for AT&T for example. That is why we are listed as free on application sites. The billing for the app is done through your service provider and is out of our hands.

Be wary of buying a used phone online. I just found out that my son's account has been charged the $2.99/mo charge for the last six months. The timing of it makes me think that this app must have been approved by the previous owner of the phone, and I'm guessing that when my son's SIM card was inserted, the charges just continued as authorized by the previous owner but to my son's account! AT&T can only refund 3 months of past charges, but they have now placed a purchase block on the account to prevent something like this from ever happening again. THERE MUST BE MANY PEOPLE WHO ARE UNAWARE THAT THEY ARE BEING RIPPED OFF LIKE THIS. THERE OUGHT TO BE A LAW.

Everyone who works at this company and the CEO should be arrested. How do you people sleep at night. This is a total SCAM and the complete piece of crap app. They paid off AT&T to put it on their phones and it can't be deleted, I have had to get the subscription cancelled 3 times.
    • Hi Mike,
We appreciate your concern regarding the WHERE app on AT&T phones. Unfortunately, billing issues can only be resolved with AT&T and not WHERE. We work closely with AT&T to make sure their customers are satisfied with the WHERE app. If there's anything we can do to fix the situation on our end, please let us know. Have a good day.

  • I also got caught up in this "drive-by" scam. I noticed the $2.99 charge on my AT&T bill and queried it. AT&T cancelled the charge. But I noticed that it was listed as going to renew on June 10, so asked AT&T if that would happen. They said it might. They said I should send a STOP message to the "short code" -- check the bill, the short code is listed as "n/a". So I opened the Where app on my phone to see if I could cancel it from there. There was no way to do that, then the AT&T person (still on the line) says "oops, you're subscribed again!". Once you open that app, it resubscribes you! So this is how it works:
    1. Click on the app, you put Where on the money train (your money!)
    2. There is no way to prevent this, no "I accept" dialog was given.
    3. I asked AT&T how I can uninstall the app. You can't!

This seems clearly illegal. Is anyone awake at the FCC?

    Where Inc!

You should be ashamed of yourselves. This is clearly a deceptive business practice that pisses off users. I hope you enjoy counting your money in jail one day because that is where you belong.

Payment confirmation in a TOS is unheard of and should be illegal. Seriously who reads a TOS? You guys suck.

Just found out I was being billed for this service even though I hit cancel when I launched the app.

Its listed as a free app on android market but AT&T phones have it pre-installed and have to pay a subscription fee??
After this nightmarish experience, I'm going to uninstall this app.
Oh wait... this dubious little sucker can't be uninstalled on AT&T..

  • OMFG, I just got charged today for $2.99 from WHERE Inc., this app isn't even on my phone, this person from WHERE Inc.(above) says they come preloaded on some devices, well I have an AT&T iPhone with no app called where inc. This is just amazing to me that this company can make charges to your phone without consent. THE APP DOESN'T EXIST ON MY PHONE!!!! I am PISSED! And who the hell would pay $2.99 each and every month for this piece of crap, I have an app called "around me" which does the same as Nicole describes and it was a ONE TIME CHARGE of .99 cents, you guys are a bunch of GD thieves and I have a real hard time believing that WHERE Inc. got these cell phone carriers to agree to preload this app on unsuspecting peoples phones. I AM FILING A COMPLAINT WITH THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION AND CONTACTING AT&T TO SEE IF THEY AUTHORIZED YOUR APP. I HAVE NEVER SEEN 3RD PARTY APPS PRE INSTALLED ON MY IPHONE. I HAVE TO PURCHASE THEM THROUGH ITUNES.

  • You can go here: https://cingular-oac.qpass.com/oac/ht... And cancel a subscription like this stupid WHERE. I did it and it said it will not renew, I came back and rechecked and it did not in fact, renew. You'll have to have your pin number to access.
