why does Whole Foods corporate green light independent stores to support abortion by donating to Planned Parenthood? As a customer I don't want to wonder if my whole foods store is supporting abortion.

Whole Foods Market focuses on selling natural and organic foods and the issues directly associated with that business. The core values of our company are directly associated with our business: 1) We sell the highest quality natural and organic products available; 2) we satisfy and delight our customers; 3) we care about team member happiness and excellence; 4) we create wealth through profit and growth; 5) we care about our communities and our environment; and 6) we create ongoing win-win partnerships with our suppliers.

Given our business and core values, we concentrate on issues involving the environment and living a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, both our customer base and shareholders come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide range of political and religious views. While Whole Foods Market’s donation policy allows our stores the freedom to choose organizations that are important to our communities and Team Members, on a corporate level, Whole Foods Market Inc. has not provided donations or financial support to Planned Parenthood.

We encourage you to contact the store where you shop to find out who they donate to. We do not call out any specific organizations by name as to who our stores can or cannot donate to. We thank you for your comments and hope you will continue to support Whole Foods Market because of our commitment to bringing you the most healthful natural foods available.

  • I’m confused
So the corporate organization, "Whole Foods Market, Inc." says that each store, in the name of "Whole Foods Market", can (and some do) donate to part of their income to Planned Parenthood?

Are you saying that Whole Foods Market, Inc. has not provided donations to Planned Parenthood?

    Is that right?

Are you saying that each store is independently run? They are their own organizations? This seems like double-talk... am I getting it wrong?
    • In the store where I work, when you bring your bags for groceries to the store, you get to either take a bag credit off your bill or have the option to donate the 10 cents to either a local charity or the Whole Planet Foundation. We do this to encourage better environmental choices and to encourage supporting the community.

The local charity changes every quarter and each store can decide what local charity they want to support that quarter. Local charities submit and application and these applications are reviewed by the customer service leadership. The entire customer service team is presented with usually 3 to 5 choices and each member votes on which charity to feature that quarter. That is how the charity to promote is chosen. In our store we have chosen the Shelter for Abused Women and Children, The Candlelight society, whose mission is to help children with cancer, the United Arts Council, whose mission is to bring arts to at risk children who do not have access to the arts.

Each store is empowered to choose their own charities without going through corporate headquarters. We are involved with our communities and understand the needs better than the corporate operations do.

I hope that clears up any confusion.

You are an idiot. Planned parenthood offers alternative choices other than abortion. It's about counseling and contraception. Get a life and educate yourself.

    • PP makes millions off of abortion! They just offer other services to make them look like they care. Don't kid yourself people.
    • PP helps pimps take care of their "stock" providing abortions and std care a lot of times to very young girls. Should be reporting the cases all over the country but instead they collect checks and keep their mouths shut. PP was founded by a eugenic leader Margaret Sanger who called Blacks "human weeds" and yes 90% of what they do are abortions. Many do not even do a pap smear! It is population control! Bill Gates donates millions because feels there are too many people on the planet. It is a horrid organ with horrid roots. Abortion is not a religious issue. Killing babies is a moral issue. I worked the cases. I know PP is a very corrupt entity.

  • Yeah hello "planned". Why do people feel the need to project their religious beliefs on others. Mind your own business or shop elsewhere. The whole point of PP is to not do something stupid and then feel your only option is abortion.

    • Exactly. At the very least, Whole Foods, and other supporting organizations should be forthcoming with the organizations they support. If PP is for the good of the community, there should be no problem owning up to it.
Since when was turnkit trying to force beliefs on anyone? I haven't seen evidence of that. I've only seen evidence of seeking the facts in order to practice his/ her beliefs. Practicing your beliefs is not the same as forcing them on others. WHy are people so threatened by pro-life ideals?

  • Where I shop is my business. If I shop at Whole Foods, some of the stores use part of the profits they make from me to Planned Parenthood and I can only learn which stores do so by researching each one. That's unacceptable. I should be able to make informed decisions about the charities I support both directly and indirectly. I'd rather give money directly to those who will use it for families, including single mothers, who can't afford to care for their children properly rather than for contraceptives or abortion (the Sisters of Life are opening a new, free, GYN clinic here in NY - I'll give them some of the money I'll save by not shopping at WF). After all, it is my choice to decide where to shop and I choose to stop shopping at Whole Foods. And it is my choice to communicate with my friends and acquaintances, so I'll pass this info on to all them. And of course they can choose to communicate with those they know, etc., etc., etc. Maybe Whole Foods won't care. Maybe they will. Let's wait and see, shall we?
    • I agree. And i believe that pre-born human beings deserve a choice. Just when does taking away someone's choice to live get called 'murder'? Some would evn take away a newborn's right to live, if their doctors had intended to abort him or her! And by starvation - a way much crueler than we would allow animals to be treated!! We need to get beyond ourselves and realize that at conception, another human being who feels pain and has been shown to scream in agony is involved.

I know it's painful to admit this. I have alowed a rough wanded ultrasound which effectively aborted by last pair of twins - I should have stood up to that. And I was fearful for the future. But acting simply out have fear has often led to regret.

  • Grapeape, you may be an ex-team member but I have worked in securities law and corporate accounting for nearly 20 years. Each store may be given the right to make certain business decisions but since Whole Foods, Inc. is a publicly traded corporation, they cannot file tax returns, 10Ks/10Qs and other documents without knowing to whom donations are made. Whole Foods, Inc. is not a franchise. Each individual store has only as much freedom as Whole Foods, Inc. chooses to allow - and Whole Foods, Inc. can alter the type or amount of freedom, even revoke it, any time they please. Today, their policy allows individual stores to make donations to Planned Parenthood. They have the ability to change their policy any time they wish.

Whole Foods, Inc. is essentially saying they have passed responsibility onto others but since those others are still Whole Foods, Inc., they've not passed responsibility on at all. Instead, they've just confused many who know little or nothing about corporate law.

It is patently false that Whole Foods donates to Planned Parenthood and horribly inappropriate to post such things without fact checking.

"Thank you for the heads up. Your instincts are correct and I wish everyone would confront us as you have rather than accept the boycotts at face value. It is against company policy for stores to donate to any politically charged organizations. We donate to thousands of organizations in our community, but we have never donated to Planned Parenthood, and I am disappointed that not one organizer of these boycotts has reached out to me to at least discuss their concerns. Thank you again.

Please check your information before you post - or at least don't post something as truth until you confirm.

Also, you could always CALL your local Whole Foods and actually speak with them in person to express your concerns and ask them about their donations instead of posting online first.

    Thank you,

  • DRUSILLA hit the nail on the head: "Each individual store has only as much freedom as Whole Foods, Inc. chooses to allow.."

Whole Foods could put an end to all of this w/ less than two minutes work:

Put out a press release that they've contacted all store managers with a simple memo saying "do NOT give to Planned Parenthood in the future".
    .
    .

Question: Why haven't they done it ??

Answer: Because they want their stores in liberal areas to look pro-choice ... and .... they want their stores in conservative areas to look pro life.

So, while everyone argues (including pro-choicers among themselves saying "but MY store doesn't give"), Whole Foods is laughing (with Planned Parenthood) all the way to the bank........

This is ridiculous. I read LDI's press release and asked them for evidence. I got it emailed to me in five minutes. I also found evidence myself just by searching online (PP of Chester Co. gets money from Whole Foods and it is right on their website:plan4it.org/special_eventsSpring08.html. They even have a link to the Whole Foods Market!!!) Winnie said it herself: "While Whole Foods Market’s donation policy allows our stores the freedom to choose organizations that are important to our communities and Team Members, on a corporate level, Whole Foods Market Inc. has not provided donations or financial support to Planned Parenthood." As LDI's president said, "All we can say is, 'So what?' It does not matter if the money going to Planned Parenthood comes from the corporate headquarters or a local store. The point is that it is coming from Whole Foods Market, along with the company's "stamp of approval" for the pro-abortion group."

Maybe LDI isn't interested in working with people who just accuse them of wrongdoing without waiting for a reply before trashing the group in public. LDI has obviously done its homework and done it well. I think they can be trusted. No one wants to get sued after all. Looks like someone owes LDI a big and PUBLIC apology!

As for those who excuse PP's abortion business by mentioning they do some good, too, I can think of a lot of others in history who did some really bad things, but they were never all bad. Doing good in some areas is no defense for killing.

So "RikerSpiker" was "rudely treated." Well, boo-hoo. I saw the email you wrote to them and you should be ashamed. You did flatly accuse them. You didn't ask. I don't blame LDI for ignoring you. I plan to do do the same quite soon as well.

As for a lawsuit, I was talking about LDI wanting to get things right so they don't get sued by a company. I was not talking about anyone suing you. And what you call "slander" is merely them telling the truth--they quote from your emails directly. Anyone can read the press release for themselves. Where's the "slander"? Where's the "inflammatory lies"? Anyone can read the newsletter article about you, too, and decide for themselves (http://www.fightpp.org/downloads/pubs... [pages 5-6]).

You consider yourself some sort of truth-getting "60 Minutes"-type investigator when you're really just irresponsible and after some attention. Flipper is right. You are making the abortion industry and the corporations that support them happy. (I gave you the proof on Whole Foods and I notice you've failed to mention that is your last message. Hmmm. But your silence is anything but golden.)

"RikerSpiker," shame on you! Now stop this foolishness! If you're not principled enough to apologize to LDI, at least stop spreading such nonsense.

  • I’m VERY confident
Well, I do not work for LDI. I asked LDI for the email conversations and they sent them to me. Nothing inappropriate. They were not marked "PERSONAL" or "CONFIDENTIAL." You're telling people what LDI said in their emails to you but you don't like when they tell people--by showing them the direct proof--what you have written?

I did read the email about "time." Like I said, I would have ignored you, too. They sent the proof to me right away.

Now your story changes. At first, no Whole Foods Market outlet gave to PP. Now you think we should check with our local store. It doesn't matter which part of Whole Foods gives the money to PP. Who cares if the national office doesn't do it directly; some of their stores do. As Flipper said, Whole Foods could stop this in a second. But they will not do so. LDI's newsletter article gave several references to other stories about the misleading statements made by Whole Foods. You should check them out.

Once again, you cannot point to any "lies"--inflammatory or otherwise, and you cannot point to any "slander."

Well, so LDI should have been nicer to you. Your first email to them was anything but nice. (Sort of like the, "you can keep your 'shame' and shove it" tirade.) Maybe LDI should have ignored your style and tone, but I don't blame them. You came across like a pro-abortion zealot or weak pro-lifer who wants to shop at Whole Foods Market and the truth be damned.

You now have proof. But you persist because LDI wasn't as nice as you would have liked. Well, once again, boo-hoo!

The best way to get people to stop talking and writing about this is for YOU to stop talking and writing about this. Seems pretty simple to me.

  • I’m not shopping at Whole Foods because they actively pay to abort the unborn.
yeah - after reviewing all these messages it seems pretty simple:

Whole Foods is a corporation--they try to "pass the buck" and say they give *local* stores freedom to do what they want and so their HQ is not responsible for what is done in their name.

But until individual stores are actually individual corporations then the main HQ IS RESPONSIBLE for the local stores' actions--the main office approves of what they do and it is done in their name--i.e. they are responsible.

So when you shop at Whole Foods you are shopping at "Whole Foods" and it is "Whole Foods" corporately who, because of their corporate policies, give money to Planned Parenthood, ergo - it is "Whole Foods" who supports abortion with donations to cause abortion.

    So the question is,
"Do I want to shop at a store who will take profit from my business and give it to Planned Parenthood to directly pay for abortions?"

If someone is for helping PP pay for abortions then you would say
    - "Yes, I'll shop at Whole Foods"
and if you don't want to help pay PP to provide abortions you would say
    - "No, I'll not shop at Whole Foods"

    Did I get it wrong?
    • It's PLANNED PARENTHOOD. It's CHOICE. It PLANS.

It explores which way AN INDIVIDUAL PERSON can to go -- many different ways of it, too -- it forces NO ONE to... to what, to explore all possible outcomes in a crisis situaton?! Oh, Horror. Try life in a third-world country -- or just without your FREE INTERNET, for a start -- if you can get some real-WHOLE-world perspective in no other way.

Confused young (or otherwise) women -- who would OFTEN otherwise kill themselves -- ask for this agency's support in times of dire need. It involves them, NOT you, NOT yo mammy, and NOT yo baby-mammy, unless YOU initiate -- and maintain!!! -- contact. Frankly, I'm glad someone is there for these people.

Further, they want to HELP PEOPLE WHO ARE 100% UNDENIABLY FULLY-RIGHTED HUMAN BEINGS!

And, guess what? You do not have to agree, as I don't agree with you. See, our forefathers made sure that, when we left England, we'd be FREE TO DO WHAT WE, AS PERSONAL INDIVIDUALS, NEEDED TO DO, FOREVER MORE.

You really, really don't get what you're doing -- you can't possibly conceive of it. You want no choices for yourself? Then, please, hurry-hurry-HURRY to take away the rights of others! Brill.

Don't you dare to call pro-choice pro-abortion. That makes anyone who "lets" their friend have a cigarette at a party "someone who actively supports other people's death by lung cancer". That makes anyone who thinks they might need to keep a gun in a dangerous city "someone who actively shoots screaming and begging mothers-of-three in the brain". You should join the USA gymnastic team -- the long-jumps category would really suit you.

In semi-closing... Wha? Damn, get a job. You'll be far less angsty about what's zero-your-business if you were taking care of YOUR OWN. Is your house clean? Does your daughter or son KNOW you love him -- have you told her, today -- are they content? How about your pets -- does one need a bath -- a walk?

Is there some CONSTRUCTIVE way in which you can improve YOUR CORNER of the world?? My, yes, there are hundreds of them. Yup, it's still the same -- sorry, nope, we still can't do it for you. For positive change, YOU must clean up YOUR OWN corner of the world.

If we all did that, THE WORLD WOULD BE BETTER... but here's the thing! EVERYTHING still wouldn't be precisely as YOU, PERSONALLY wanted it to be. It would, however, be a world in which everyone could do what they personally (independently of any superiorly placed and uninvited opinions) needed to do.

Don't shop at Whole Foods, if it makes you -- educatedly OR misguidedly -- envision severed fetus parts, then! That would be v. disturbing, for sure. For Heaven's Sakes, Be Happy. But... step OFF of the all-encompassing judgments; you are getting mighty broad with that index finger of yours. Note the four others pointing back at you, post-haste, and Put Down That Weapon!!!

  • I’m happy
I just spoke with the marketing rep at the MKE Whole Foods.
She was very helpful and explained their store policy and also referred me to the corporate pages to review the company's policy.

She explained that all donation recipient information is public. (A real positive sign that the company is being honest about who they support.)

Also, she told me that all recipients who apply for a donation are reviewed, and must meet the "seven core values" (mentioned above....tho' there are only 6 mentioned...she thinks # 7 will be posted soon.)

I found this a positive way to inform customers about the store's approach to supporting other people in their community who can benefit from their charitable contributions.

She was very polite when I briefly expressed my concerns about Planned Parenthood and that in my opinion, (based on my personal experiences with PP), there is not a good match of "core values" between Whole Foods and PP.

All in all, I am glad to have contacted her. She is obviously a very busy employee of Whole Foods. She did a great job of answering my questions and giving me information.

She told me that she cannot claim that PP will never receive a donation from her store....and that the best way to know about any organization they contribute to is the keep checking in the store....where that info is made available.

Hope this helps anyone who is concerned that they aren't indirectly supporting PP, which is mixture of some good "values" mixed in with a tremendous amount of misinformation, deceit and pure evil.

Better idea-- if you object to stores that support Planned Parenthood, just don't shop at the chain. Which is why I support Trader Joe's instead of Whole Foods. Now that's CHOICE!
