Extermination of the stand of unique tundra swan, written down in the Red Books of Russia and Europe.

Respected President!
Ladies and Gentlemen!
Thank you for your address to the government of RF on the problem of forest’s fires in Russia. The government of RF gave instructions through the minister for extraordinary situations to increase in two times the means of fighting against forest’s fires. In spite of these insufficient measures (because of state forest’s protection was liquidated and the means for fights against forest’s fires were shortened in seven times), the voice of the representatives of the World Fund for Protection of Wild Nature was heard by the authorities.
But there is another problem of great importance in Russia connected with a wild nature. In Saint-Petersburg on the shore of Finnish gulf between the mouth of Malaya Neva and Smolenka river there is situated for millions years the very important migration stand of the unique tundra swan. The tundra swan is a rare bird and is written down in the Red Books of Russia and Europe. This stand is very important by the reason that in spring ‘when tundra swan flies to Finnish gulf, all the territory of the gulf is still covered by ice and only in one place , by the reason of a river stream, there are hollows full of water, where swans can feed the fish and the plankton. http://nobilities.ucoz.ru/index/xiv/0-50
Today the authorities of RF and Saint-Petersburg plan to develop a large construction at the same place of the shore the hotels, concert halls and so on. It means that the rare birds will perish. Now the preliminary works to build artificial island they have. Our addresses to Putin and Matvienko didn’t give the necessary results, because commercial profits were for this persons more important meaning, than the preservation of unique birds. We hope that the voice of International organizations will have much more important resonance. We ask you to address to Medvedev and Putin to stop this barbaric extermination of tundra swan.

    • We know very well the WWF office in Moscow. But unfortunately we have to underline the fact that high officials in Russia, including Putin and Medvedev ignore the addresses of the citizens of RF or react on it fictionally as one can see it in case of forests fires. Once again! On the address of the representative of WWF in RF to the authorities on the problem of forests fires the necessary means were increased in two times not in seven as it needs really. So if there will not be the international addresses on this problem and the next summer will be as hot as in 2011, the mankind will have hundred thousands of hectares of Siberian forests in fire (including national parks with its unique faun).
As to the problem of the stand of the tundra swan in then mouth of Neva, it is more complicated, because of a planned construction of the embankment, hotels and concert halls as I mentioned is connected with big commercial interests. Many times the activists of ecological and social organizations addressed to the authorities of RF and Saint-Petersburg about it. The answer was that instead of the real stand of birds they will construct another, artificial territory more far from the mouth of Neva in the Baltic Sea. Vu t in time of standing the swans here there is only one territory free of ice- the mouth of Neva and Smolenka river’ because of its streams. It is the last place in all mouths of Neva, where there is not yet any constructions. So if it will be covered by constructions, there will not stay any place for tundra swans to stand. It means that they will perish. Only the voice of international organizations can influence the authorities of RF to stop this anti-natural project. And that is why we ask you to pass our address to the leaders of WWF.

  • Dear Mikail
WWF International relies on the expertise of our national offices to direct us when a campaign needs to go from a national concern to an international one. At this point, we haven't been advised by WWF-Russia than an international response is required for the Tundra Swan.

At this point we can only encourage you to keep working closely with WWF-Russia around this issue. If we hear anything more at WWF International we will post more around this issue.
