  • Hello and greetings from the Faroes. The pictures may seem very extreme, as if the pilot whales were killed painfully. However, the truth is that we've have and keep developing more modern equipment so the whales will die more painless. At this day they die within few seconds and therefore don't experience the great pain as some of you imply. Sadly, the majority of those who protest against the pilot whaling are carnivores with no knowledge in terms of the whaling. They think that we kill the whales with hooks (as the picture above this comment perhaps convince you). This isn't so either, we just haul he whales to lower water so it's easier to kill them. Their spinal cords are cut so they die instantly. And keep in mind that these are modern methods which are approved by international organizations. We kill the whales for food, not for fun. So the whaling actually isn't worse than killing other animals. And one thing more, don't believe those articles which don't have a neutral point of view. Because the they'll just claim something as for instance that we kill the whales to prove our manhood as some of you might have read.

Thanks to see u reply. Your resaons are not justified. Whole world is tryng protect whales and Dolphins and you guys are killing. I am a vegetraian. And I do not support any kind of killings. You have various options for food.
I am just back from Maldives (a country similar to yours, all islands) very happy to see that they are trying there level best to protect sea animals and ocean. They also take food from sea (mostly Tuna) and lobsters, but at the same time they are also encoraging the Tuna population by various steps and they protect remaning creatures lot. And they import vegetables and fruits.
You also depend on fish and other, and import the stuff. Protect the ocean and ecology. It protects you and your country.

I haven't seen any reply from you for my previous comment I think.

  • Hi, kaarthiik,thota!
Didn't see your comment from before. However, we don't kill those pilot whales to prove our manhood as you've read. We kill them for food. The manhood thing is just a lie activists initially used to convince people with. The pilot whales aren't a threatened species; approximately 1.000.000 are left and we only 1.000 at the most a year which won't affect the population the slightest. It's very rare that we kill 1.000 whales a year. In 2008 for instance we kill none.
It's not like that we're going to stop eating meat, no one is. But to argue about whether vegetarianism is impossible because neither of us can prove anything. It's pretty hard to obtain the vitamins and nutrition elsewhere than from meat thinking of the great variation in the food. So to defend my point of view I can say that the killing of pilot whales isn't worse than killing of other animals.

    Hi Asdasdasdd

Thanks for your reply. I can understand to some extent that some of you guys are not killing them to prove your manhood. But, I heard from some Foresans that they kill to prove manhood and its a sport.
Just be sure that most species that went extinit and are threatend only because of killing by humans. You say those are not threatend, but they are in the red list of threatened species. Search wiki about piolot whales.

And another thing, is if someone search for Forase Islands, the first thing seen by the people is the massive killings, we see nothng good about you people. I strongly belive that there is some good part about you. But this cruelity is hiding it.
And the data you say that 1000000 are present in oceans, its not humans decide the numbers, its the nature ecology that decides.

I did not mean to say stop eating meat. I just want to say that humans do not have right on the creatures of the wild. If you want meat, get them from your farms/import it. For example, Tuna is the most nutrious fish, encorage its population and eat them, there are many fishes in that categoru. And piolt whales have mercury which is not good for brain, I know you guys do not belive and you say that its our acient practice.

Its really worse to kill poilt whales, because of above resaons and the most important thing is these lovely gentle creatures come near humans for love.
They expect the love from us and you guys are killing them.
how would you feel when someone attaks you with a kinfe when you are approaching them for love?

Please stop! I am open for your discussion anywhere, even on Facebook.

P.s: I am not only requesting Forasens, but also Japanense to stop the whaling.

And I bycotted Japanese and Forasean products so I do not buy them until they stop whaling. And I avoid travelling to these countries

I request all of you guys to log protest in the similar way or any other peaceful way.

Protect nature and it protects you!

  • Hi Kaarthiik

Let me begin with your first claim. None here in the Faroes kill the whales to prove his manhood and neither is it a sport. We kill the whales only for the meat to eat. It's simply considered a delicacy here because of the taste which no other meat can provide. And I can assure you that if those "Faroese" people claim that we kill the whales for sport and to prove our manhood, they're not Faroese, because we don't consider it to be masculin to kill a whale.
Most species which are threatened are this, because the humans destroy their environment. We cut down trees as well as we settle down in the places where some species live. And let me paste a sentence from wikipedia about the pilot whales: "Indeed in its Red List of Threatened Species the IUCN lists both the long-finned and short-finned as "Lower Risk; conservation dependent"." So the whales are not going to extinct because of us...
And when you search for the Faroe Islands you'll find information about the beautiful landscape we have here. However, if you search for the whaling, you'll see many misinformed people sneer at the Faroe Islands. Like you, many think that we kill the whales for entertainment and manhood and they don't even know where the meat, they have for dinner, origins.
We don't decide the numbers, we simply just count the whales and say how many they are. The number depends on whom you're asking. Some sources say that the absolute lowest number the whales could be could be 500.000. Even this is a high number and the chances that it's true are incredibly small. So the number is approximate 800.000 to 1.000.000.
We check the numbers all the time in terms of the pilot whales. We attach transmitters on their backs and locate where they mate. Here we can count them more exactly. The ocean is like a big farm where we use modern technology to count the whales instead of having them in capitivity. And isn't it best for the animals to live in the free all their lives instead of living in capitivity and suffer from stress all their lives?
I know it's unhealthy to eat pilot whales - I never deny it. But as I said before, the whale meat is considered a delicacy and it's eaten only a few times a year which makes it harmless to eat. The meat contains many healthy nutritions as well as many healthy vitamins but the mercury makes it dangerous to eat if eaten too much. If you only eat the meat a few times, the mercury will slowly get out of your body.
You can't compare the pilot whales to human. They have no conscience and hence won't come to us to love us. They coincidently swim close to land and then we kill them. It's not like they swim close to land on purpose. They don't expect love from us. And if you approached me with something I didn't know what it was, I don't think I would be scared. However, the whales are stressed when they reach land and won't notice the weapons and won't recognize them either. I have conscience and they don't, that's why they don't suffer mentally when killed.
And why do you boycott Faroese products? It just will make us become dependent on the whales as food and thus just will kill more of them. ;-)

Don't believe those articles which oppose the killing, because they never have their facts straight. One site which provides real facts is www.whaling.fo.

  • to quote asdasdasdd "If you only eat the meat a few times, the mercury will slowly get out of your body"
That maybe true but not untill after it's done it's damage. Many people will be susceptible to these toxins especially pregnant women and children.
    Read this report: http://assets.panda.org/downloads/sma...

To quote him again: "And why do you boycott Faroese products? It just will make us become dependent on the whales as food and thus just will kill more of them."
Well if you can only eat the meat rarely because of health risks then it can't possibly be your STAPLE diet. You can't possibly be dependent on it and if you are NOT dependent on it then you should have no need to be killing such high numbers of whales either now or in the future. I'm sorry but your arguement holds NO water whatsoever and I like many others will boycott everything about your land and Japan.

You clearly have other foods to eat. You farm sheep and salmon and grow vegetables. Could you not be cultivating and growing far more products?
We all have to adapt our life styles as the world changes. It's a wise man who sees problems looming ahead and adapts accordingly.

Yet another quote "I have conscience and they don't, that's why they don't suffer mentally when killed."
Have you ever read anything scientific to prove what you say? Read this report: http://www.think-differently-about-sh...
There is more where this came from if only you used your own intelligence to look for the information instead of blindly quoting from other ignorant people around you.

  • Hi Suzy Peters!
I know it's dangerous to eat the meat if you're a child or pregnant. That's why it's recommended here to stay away from the meat until that status is over.
The thing with the Faroese products was more meant as a joke. I know very well that if we were hit by disaster, we would more likely eat fish than going to search for the whales.
Yes, we could begin growing more vegetables if the world would have wanted it. But we're such a small country that it wouldn't be nearly enough to export. 98% of all our exports is fish. Our chances of export products are limited because of our small islands. The area which we have right to fish in is much bigger than the area we can plant things on. We could stop fishing but what should replace it? And as long as people buy the fish, we'll keep on of course. As well we could become vegetarians but none of you really justifies the reason to stop eating meat and none of apparently will.
Here's a link for what I'm talking about concerning the conscience: http://www.newscientist.com/article/d...
And I think the link you sent was all about fish, not about whales.

  • Hiya......why do you have to export? Can't you be more self sustainable and grow your own provisions so you don't have to import so much? Maybe I'm naive but it's much healthier to be macrobiotic....ie, eating what is grown locally and seasonally. The world's gone mad wanting to eat anything and everything at anytime regardless. Flying all this food round the worlds is contributing massively to global warming. When the hell are we going to start learning?
Sorry but your link has only an item about Magpies on it with some very funny retorts from one guy in particular!
I have actually cut down massively on my meat consumption in the last year. I try to only eat meat killed in a humane way as some abattoirs are as heartless as the whalers. I do not want to knowingly be part of some terrible inhumane slaughter.
And yes, I realised the link was about fish which are nowhere near as sentient or intelligent as ceteceans so I would say the article only highlights my point, not diminshes it!

  • Hi Suzy
Today the human deman many things to live. Maybe it's greed. But the thing is that we could survive only by fishing. But the thing is that we want things that we're not able to make ourselves. We want computers and so on. In these days it's pretty hard to trade food for products. Therefore the only way is to keep our economy up. And yes, everything is about the money. We keep throwing carbondioxide in the air as long it's cheaper than any other fuel.
I actually found information on wikipedia about the self-awareness of animals and I copied the source and paste it here.
It's impossible to eat meat where every animals have been humanely treated. There will always be stress amongst them, fear and so on.
If you're talking about us as the evil whalers, I think you believe wrong. I can agree that it's mean to kill the great whales where they shoot a harpoon into the whale and wait until it bleeds to death. But killing a whale by cutting its spinal cord so it dies instantly isn't that different from killing a cow.
Yes, the link was about fish, not about whales, and therefore it diminishes it. I know that there are plenty of sites on the net which say that the whales are cleverer than humans as well as finding sites which claim that we kill the whales by putting a hook in the whales' eye. I found some information on the site which can't be compared to whales.

I will say reading the responses has indeed made me rethink my initial positon which in retrospect is essential education .

Sometimes images we see are selective, blurred and just damn lies.,

Granted the graphics are damning but there are circumstances and perspective.

    The media does lie.

I do eat meat but I dont eat fish and yes there are moments I wish I never tasted the flesh of another living being. ( just saying)

I really hope in the future this thing we call the internet becomes a tool for the greater good and not the demise and devil of our own making

  • Thanks for replies and your participation, and its nice to see a discussion going on.

Guys, these whales are intelligent but not cunning as humans. They have consince, a small example to prove animals have consince. If you just shout at your pet dog when it comes to you for love, it runs away and even do not eat food and becomes dull until you show love.
Its proven that whales are more intellegent than dogs, so they have consince. So, humans are destroying the trust and faith the other animals have.

I have seen school of dolphins (10-15) roaming around my boat as soon as they sensed us and played around our boat. This happend to me just 2 days back in Maldives. We are requested not to touch/feed any creature so we just follwed request. They followed us for some distance. Its clear that they want to be friendly with humans. And its not coincidence that they come to your shore.

We can understan that you have little space to farm, but there are few countries like yours, but they are backed by all nations for everythng.
Maldives and seychelles are small but they are not doing as you guys do.

If you want money, encorage tourisim stop cruelity, and show the world the possitive thing by doing good. Tourisim would boost your economy.
And you say you kill them for delicacy food, its not a mandatory one. So you guys can live happily without it.

And comming to extinction, why we need to speak weather or not they are on the brink of extinction? They are approaching to threatend status. We need to act before its too late. Protect them.

Why you guys do not follow the things whole world is following? Whole world is trying to stop whaling. if you follow the things you get good oppurtunities. You are not alone in the world.

And, do not export the meat. So no one asks for them. Do not create a unncessary market.

Comming to Fab's comments. Yes this has become economical and politcal debate. Some of the pics might be or might not be true, but the truth is you guys are doing the killings.

Internet is a boon and sin, just like two sides of a coin, it all depends on how you use. If you do good, internet passes it fast, but the bad very fast.

Do not blame media. Its not in place yet, if it is here whole world will be shouting at you. its just message that is circulation, if BBC/CNN was in place and could capture the killing then it would be broadcasted more and more people will be disliking you guys more than expected.

Just please stop! there are many ways to get food and leave happily let the whales leave happily and we the humans help them.

  • Hi. Let me begin with your first claims. The reason why your dog is walking behind you is not because it loves you. It's instinct. Have you ever thought about why when training a dog you always use food persuade him with? It's instinct. He knows that when he's around you, he'll get food as well as rolling on the floor when you say so to him. And when you shout at a dog, he thinks of it as you're angry and perhaps are going to beat him. So it's instinctive that he flees as we all do. So it's not a sign that dolphins and whales have conscience.
The reason why dolphins surround your boat when you're sailing is that dolphins are very curious and are on of the few races which like to play even when grown up. It's not because of love that they surround your boat. For instance, it's not like bears hate humans that they attack us whenever they see us. It's instinct, they see us as a threat when we enter their territory.
We've killed the whales for centuries and if they would've become extinct because we kill them, they should be extinct long time ago. The species of the pilot whales only has an increasing population. They're not becoming extinct.
if we would stop fishing it would be a disaster for our economy. I hope you understand that it will never happen that we stop fishing.
It's not like that if we stop killing pilot whales, many thousand tourists (more than already visit our islands) will come visiting us. National Geographic already elected the Faroe Islands as the most unspoiled islands in the world. The reason why we don't care what the world thinks about the pilot whaling is, because the world doesn't have the proper knowledge to judge us. Like you, the world thinks that we kill the whales for fun and stab them in the eyes when killing them; we've already been approved by international whale organizations which have the proper knowledge to judge us.
This is not a mandatory killing as you said but we've done it for centuries and won't stop. The meat has an incredible taste, it's free and there's no reason to stop killing the whales. I mean, you encourage us to stop killing the whales because of vegetarian reasons. As you probably know, the world will never stop eating meat, me neither, so the arguments you use will never come true. No one has other arguments which justifies the stop of the pilot whaling and therefore we won't stop, because we only see it as a benefit that we kill it.
I don't know you've misunderstood something, but we don't sell the pilot whale meat. It's illegal because it doesn't pass the demands of the ministry of health because of its high toxin content. So the meat is only shared to those who participated in the pilot whaling.
Many pictures you see are photoshopped (by which I mean that the water seems much more red than in reality). But I don't think that the pictures lie that much about the whaling. It's rather the information given which deceives.

  • Hi,

Hope you had a good Christmas!

Firstly, I did not train my pets by giving them rewards in form of food, and I am against that way so I did not sent them to a trainer, I just gave a very basic training to them with the words and actions. And when they do good I cuddle. I was with the dogs from my childhood and its almost 22 years. And my dogs do not go to any one who shows the food. Not only my pets but most of the pet dogs will not get persuaded with foods.

And I never mean to stop you eating meat, I know its very hard. My point is only to say that do not kill poilot whales and other creatures which are protected by many countries. In India Whales and Dolphins share the category of protection the endagerd Tiger is given.

I know its hard to farm vegetables in small islands, and I did not said you to stop fishing. I am requesting you to stop whaling. As you guys do not export the whale meat, its not going to affect your economy too.

And ofcourse I learnt that its a delicay food, previously I was in impression that its your main course. And to be honest none of Foresan said us the same. And just not that we are not only asking you to stop whaling but also requesting Japan.

Extinction of species started rapidly in recent decades. Because people are using technology to kill creatures, even ancient times also ppl used to kill but due to unavilability of modren weapons the damage is little. But now you use speed boats, ships and this makes easy to kill a creature this gets the creature to brink of extinction. As fab impression of internet becomes a devil, the technolgy and inventions you are using for destruction.

And we cut tress for living, but now the world is trying to minimize it and planting more and more,as trees became a part of basic needs so we need to cut them but also we are growing more of them and trying to go greener.
And we are recycling many things, as you are a small nation I ustd that you do not have recycleing facilites as the others have.

Whales are not your basic food, and you can also live happily without killing them. So, you can stop killings. You said world do not know the facts. Make the world to know the facts and get the approval before killing.
Sea life is not a property of Humans, its the the property of nature.

I guess you guys need to know more about ecology.
Do you know that Coral life and sea ecosystem are equally sensitive ecosystems as rainforests?? Very delicate, can be tamperd easily but cant be repaired.
Lets save the Nature for future.

    Thanks
    Kaarthiik

  • Hi, hope you had a good christmas too!

It's probably because of instinctive reasons that your pets listen to you. You give them food and this way your pets perhaps think that to get food they're obligated to satisfy you. I'm not saying this is true but I'm saying that animals only listen to you because of the instincts and benefits you give them.
You ask us to stop kiling the pilot whales. I never define a pilot whale as a whale but rather as a pilot whale. I don't intend killing threatened whales because there are plenty of whales in the ocean. I rather think of the species. If it's a threatened species, then I'll stop killing them (or if I affect their population drastically). So comparing pilot whales to the conception of whales in India isn't right in my mind.
Our technology to kill pilot whales hasn't been changing that much throughout the years. We've stopped using a kind of spear we used to kill the whales with before. As well we're on our way to stop using the sharp hook which we put in the whales' blowholes and then haul them to lower water which has been quite controversial, because it's not proven that the whales are hurt when using these. But my point is that our ways of killing haven't been changing that much that we should've been considered a threat for the pilot whale population. Of course, we use motor boats to drive the to whales to the shore but it only makes the whaling faster (less stressful to the whales).
We do actually recycle things. The Faroe Islands are one of the richest countries in the world taking the size into consideration.
As said, we've been approved to kill the whales by people with the proper knowledge. We make a big deal out of telling people about the whaling but many of them don't listen.
The pilot whales aren't threatened in any way and haven't been for many years. Why they should become endangered now seems strange to me.
However, you've requested us to stop the pilot whaling. And mentioned above I told you that the world doesn't possess the proper knowledge to judge us. So ask you, why should we stop the whaling? We don't affect the world's ecosystem and haven't done that in many centuries.

    Denmark! This is shocking!
The sea is stained in red and its not because of the climate effects of nature.
It's because of the cruelty that human beings (civilised humans) kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins.
This happens every year in Feroe Iland in Denmark . In this slaughter, the main participants are young teens.
    WHY?
A celebration, to show that they are adults and mature!
Can WWF please help mobilize support to stop this nightmare killing of dolphins please advise.

  • It's not only dangerous to pregneant women and children. Men aren't immune to the many poisons which has accumulated in the whales.

Also, the toxins absorbed from eating this tainted flesh affects men's sperm. Weak slow sperm, fewer in number. Killing little whales might excite the men, but they will end up shooting blanks.

As you said, you are killing for food not culture, but I hear from your people is that, it is a part of your culture. Following words are from a person of your nation over the Facebook, the person replied it as a part of our discussion

"Whale-hunt is something that we in the Faroe Islands have done as long as there have been living people on our islands. So ofcause it has become a part of our culture.
Without the whale-hunt it would not have been possible to live on these islands."

I do not say you guys to stop eating meat/seafood, we request you guys to get the meat from the animals you breed in your farms/houses or get some area in sea and then make boundaries, breed them and eat for food.
Its very in-human to depend on creatures of wild. And these species are protected via many agencies and people. I request you to support the good cause.

I also hear that some meat is exported to countries which oppose whale hunt on public, but imports whale meat. Expose them to the world, and share the bad propaganda with them, let the world know it
    • Indeed, it's a part of our culture. Initially it was crucial for the life of the Faroe Islands, because food was very needed back then. However, now it's unnecessary and everyone basically only kills the whales due to the free food. With that said, the killing is not more unnecessary than the killing of other animals, because all the nutrition found in meat can be found in plants all over the world, and with our connection it should be easy to transport the plants. Even so, the world will never stop eating meat. The whales are killed very humanely, and in our opinion the whales are not more worth than pigs or cows, which is a question about moral and ethics.

The pilot whale population is strongly supervised in order to ensure that the population will remain stable. If the whales were to become threatened, we would stop immediately in contemplation of trying to stabilize the species. Doesn't this count as a big farm? Why is it only satisfactory to kill animals, if they're in captivity? It's healthier - both physically and mentally - for the animal to live in the free. I don't believe that the thought of breeding being better than letting animals in the free justifies the halt of the pilot whaling.

  • Guess I struck a nerve. asdasdasdd is firing blanks? Contrary to your assumptions, I care more about people, but I don't speak for the other posters. I don't lump everyone into one category or expect them to hold the same opinion. Of larger concern from me is the long lived radioative isotopes currently being dumped into our environment. It's much more urgent than whether people in the Faroe Islands eat a few whales. Human dieoffs from radiation will take a couple years to accelerate. The WWF should be concerned and warning humans, after all humans are their source of funding, yet I suspect that the WWF probably likes the idea of a human dieoff, it meets the objectives of "Agenda 21".
    • My point was that the people of the Faroe Islands are aware of the potential dangers by eating too much whale meat. This concerns especially pregant women and children. If the meat were too polluted to be eaten a few times a year, the people would stop eating it. However, the toxins are not dangerous if eaten in those quantities we eat it, so there's nothing to complain about in terms of the hazard of eating the meat.
If the whale meat would be contaminated with radioactive isotopes, we would also stop eating it, so don't be concerned about us.

  • BZ,
You are 100% correct, there is no denial, Governments should limit (I prefer to avoid) the use of projects involving radioactive substances, these are more threat to environment.

But this discussion is limited to Killing of Whales. I request that we shall confine this thread only to discuss killings. Else the scope of discussion will be deviated.
If you can create a new thread, pleas do it, and post the reference here, so that we all can start discussing and pressurize WWF.

  • Yes, there needs to be a general thread on radiation and it's effects on animals and humans. The whales and dolphins will eat the radioactive fish and may even die off, but there is nothing that the WWF can do to stop the current nuclear disaster. They should rally their supporters to decommission nuclear power plants, which will likely kill far more whales than the Faroe Islanders could ever eat. The islanders will need to consider that future whale meat will carry radioactive elements like Strontium-90. It won't clear from their systems, it will deposit itself in their bones where it will irradiate their bone marrow continuously, resulting in leukemia.

  • Recently I have been made aware of incessant killings of hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins in Denmark. I believe this happens every year in Feroe Iland in Denmark . In this slaughter the main participants are young teens. Can we stop this cruelty to this magnificient animals...

  • "The sea is stained in red and it is not because of the climate effects of nature. It's because of the cruelty of the human beings (civilized human) who kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins.

This happens every year in Feroe Island in Denmark . In this slaughter the main participants are young teens.

    WHY?
A celebration, to show that they are adults and mature!"

All the replies are from a year ago, is this still going on?
Hasn't Denmark been held in high esteem throughout the world because of their politeness and clean living? What a feather in their cap: "SLAUGHTERING GOD'S DEFENSLESS CREATURES AS THEY APPROACH ADULTHOOD" What do the parents of these young men think? If it is still going on, what is the point of this massacre? Is their meat used for anything besides the feeling of power from all the testosterone running ammock? What a shame not only for the young people in Denmark but for the whole world who has been standing idle while this is going on.
    May God forgive us all!!!!!!!!!

    • There are a significant number of hunts of whales, dolphins and porpoises (collectively known as cetaceans) that take place around the world.
In addition to this hunt, Japan takes thousands of small cetaceans in directed hunts every year, including dolphins, porpoises and small whales such as the Baird's beaked whale. Greenland also takes large numbers of narwhals in a hunt that has been classified as unsustainable. All of these hunts occur outside international regulation and control.

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) regulates and controls directed kills of whales, and has maintained an international moratorium on whaling for several decades. However the IWC currently only has the remit to manage whaling of the great whale species.
WWF has been working for many years to pressure the IWC to expand its remit to include small whales, dolphins and porpoises, which need the IWC's help just as much as the great whale species do.
See the following link for WWF's work at the IWC: www.panda.org/species/iwc

I hope this information has been useful - you will also find more general information on cetaceans on our website http://wwf.panda.org/what_we_do/endan...
and specific information on the work WWF is doing to protect our cetaceans http://awsassets.panda.org/downloads/....
