Thanks for your email and interest in dolphins.

We work on a broad range of threats to cetaceans (dolphins, river dolphins, whales and porpoises) across the globe with particular emphasis on bycatch (problems of incidental catch due to fisheries whereby an estimated 300,000 whales and dolphins are caught and killed each year).

We also have a number of projects around the world on the ground and engage with many international fora to mitigate a variety of threats to endangered species. These include unsustainable trade, unsustainable hunting and a variety of habitat and marine threats that affect migratory species.

We engage with CITES, IWC and CMS -information on all of these can be found on our species website.

I was unable to find out what you were specifically referring to on the website you provided, but I presume you are talking about the narwhal kills in Greenland?

Whichever hunt you are referring to, we agree that hunts of small cetaceans are in many cases a terrible problem, many of them are unsustainable, and none have legitimate benefits for conservation.

However, we do not work specifically on this issue on the ground in Greenland, and would refer you to WDCS, who works more concretely with small cetacean hunts worldwide.

  • Hi
Actually, I got the same e-mail as Luanne.

It is not in Greenland that it happened but on Faroe Islands which is part of Denmark.
Although, Faroe Islands are not part of the European Union and Denmark only has a limited responsibility of the Islands; Defense, foreign affairs and the legal system.

The dolphins are from the Cetacea species. I believe they are Long-finned and Short-finned Pilot Whales. I saw several pictures of them being killed on the coast of the Faroe Islands.
I just wanted to clarify that.

    I have attached one photo.

    Kind regards
    Sanah

    • i'm shocked and deeply touched. Just gave friendly co-operation with Danish colleagues and puzzled how it goes in their civilized country. The World is becoming crazy!!! SOS !!. Soon in Batumi ( Black Sea city) will be restored dolphins' Acqua Park -the favourite place for all.
Such a great doze of cruelty is accumulated in teenagers soul? Why? They seem to have got all they need. Do they need blood? We, in Georgia well know what is blood. Never wish people in Denmark to explore it.

The WWF did not get it at all. I rcvd the same email w/photos of the massacre taking place on the Faroe Islands. How could they see these pictures and "assume" it was referring to narwhals in Greenland?
How frustrating is it to know that an organization dedicated the preservation of the planet and it's marine life cannot see the diff between a narwal and a pilot whale?
Who sits at the desk and replies to emails? A bored civil servant waiting for his/her pension? Sounds like it.
Makes you wonder if there is really any hope for the planet.

    • Being rude and taking your frustration out on WWF isn't going to do much to help the situation.

A very helpful link was posted - http://www.wdcs.org/

WDCS has been involved in a campaign against this cruel hunt since they first founded almost 20 years ago.

Perhaps take the time to read their site, rather than sitting back shooting off nasty remarks.

      From the WDCS website:
      What can you do?
Please send a politely worded letter to the Faroese government and (copy it to the Danish Foreign Ministry) to express your protests about this hunt. The addresses are provided below. Please make the time to mail a letter, or send a fax, as it has more impact than an email.

We will not pretend that ending the Faroe Island’s drive hunts is simple. It is a long tradition of this remote and proud community that is proving hard to break. But traditions evolve over time and, rest assured, WDCS will not give up until drive hunting is consigned to the history books in the Faroe Islands.

i just got the email and if being just a simple websurfer took me all the way to this place and to many others that talk about this horrible masacre then i don't see how those who HAVE the power AND meanings to do it, don't. i mean, greenpeace goes to where a voice needs to be heard!!

i don't know, i am just so shocked to see the images and so about to throw up that i don't know what else to say but.. are they stupid?? i didn't think there were still people like these monsters that want to show their mandhood in the world.
i am using the adreesses and emails and everything to send to all my contacts so, at least i don't stay here doing nothing for those poor dolphins.

  • Hi everyone,
As we stated on our reply above, we have not yet seen this email and were unable to find the information on the website provided. This is why it has been impossible for us to comment on this.

We referred to the massacre of narwhals on the east coast of Greenland because it was a similar sad event that happened recently.

If you have the email, please send it to us at questions@wwf.panda.org and we'll do our best to clarify the matter.

    Hi,

I also received the same e-mail (I'm from Perú)... and first I thought it was a scam... but i started looking up on the internet, and I found a petition site whose goal is to stop RISSO'S DOLPHIN massacre in FEROE, DENMARK. I think signing for this petition is not enough and we should do something about it. PLEASE WWF, i've seen you are also located in Denmark. Can't your office over there do something to stop this brutality? Please let us know as soon as you can!!! I'll really appreciate it.

    Sincerely,

    Rosanna

  • Hi everyone

I have been emailing Jackie Janosi at WWF. Her latest reply stated that they don't have a direct campaign against this but that she'll forward my letter to their species program manager. If they do decide to start a campaign we can join there fight by being members of WWF Passport (membership is free). Maybe we can speed up the process if more people request action in this matter. Jackie's email address: questions@wwf.panda.org

Thanks for the petition site, I'll send it to all my friends and family and MAKE them sign!

Hi luanne, I don't know the answer to this problem but I do know the joy we experience seeing these beautiful animals pass by our coast line, for months on end, twice a year.
I live on the mid north coast of NSW, Australia and every day, before winter we see these beautiful creatures, passing by to go north to have their babies and at the moment they are traveling south with their babies. W e can see this extraordinary site numerous times almost everyday at this time of the year and although we can see it everyday we all still get so excited about the site, that is every human being in our country who see's this wonderful sight.
So how can human being on the other side of the world be so opposite and ruthlessly kill these wonderful creatures.

The pictures I saw were disgusting, but we wouldn't call these dolpins they look more like whales. We also have the pleasure of seeing dolphins almost everyday.

I wonder if these cruel disgusting people saw how much we appreciate the sight of these wonderful animals playing with their babies just off our beaches would it change their behaviour. Probably not!

But if their is anything our community can do to help you stop this disgusting behaviour, please contact me. Wendy Bramble. wbramble@dodo.com.au. If I can get my hands on some photos of the whales frollicking off our beaches I will sent them to you.

Good luck and you would have the support of millions of people, living on the coast of Australia I am sure.
    regards Wendy
    • I completely agree. This week I was so lucky to actually be interacting with the dolphins but this afternoon I received the mail about the dolphin massacre and it broke my heart to see how heartless and cruel those people could be.

The entire episode is so disgusting and it is surprising that Denmark, being a country in Europe cannot do something to stop its people from such crime.

I hope WWF can do something to intervene in this serious matter. We are there to support but they need to be our voice.

  • I’m frustrated
I have been reading this message and I feel sick to the core. How do these sick people who do these things, to some of the most beautiful and intelligent living things on this planet justify any reason for this torture and depravity. Maybe the only thing people like this understand is bloodshed and violence. If there is any justice in this world i hope one day they have a slow and painful death. Why do humans think they own this planet. The animals have as much right to live in peace without fear of being tortured, skinned alive, displayed as circus acts, used in sports, experimented on, used for food, clothing, handbags, necklaces etc. The sea should be free of pollution, toxic, oil, sewage, and any one who is working in this industry is raping the seas of all life. Finally the forests are being butchered. Maybe trees don't have feelings, I think however the mammals from little rodents to larger life forms have a great deal of feeling when man comes along and destroys there habitat and takes away there place of food and shelter. Maybe the only time the world will recover is when one day man is here no more. It is a shame that we wont then see the beauty of the world that god created.

Is there any one out there who knows of something we can do to stop these evil people, hunting and making the lives of these animals, who we share this planet with, better.

...then perhaps we could start a fresh tradition of going to the Faroe Islands and disrupting proceedings?

One guy befriended and secretly filmed the villagers but was caught and only just escaped with his life but still receives life threats. My boyfriend also filmed there for ITN in the late 80's and had a very unpleasant time till they manage to get away. These people do NOT want the world watching......I'm sure for lots of reasons, not least because some of what is written about them has to be true. There is no smoke without fire!

    • It would be worth getting a black eye for causing trouble with the locals and getting it into the news. Yes of course they would be aggressive but if enough people grouped together how much could the locals really do. It would all need to be thought out well. Maybe to come in from the sea. • I’m happy
    Denmark is a big shame.
The sea is stained in red and its not because of the climate effects of nature.

It's because of the cruelty that the human beings (civilised human) kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins.

This happens every year in Feroe iland in Denmark . In this slaughter the main participants are young teens. WHY?
To show that they are adults and mature.... BULLLLsh

In this big celebration, nothing is missing for the fun. Everyone is participating in one way or the other, killing or looking at the cruelty supporting like a spectator

Is it necessary to mention that the dolphin calderon, like all the other species of dolphins, its near instinction and they get near men to play and interact. In a way of PURE friendship

They dont die instantly; they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hocks. And at that time the dolphins produce a grim extremely compatible with the cry of a new born child.

But he suffers and theres no compassion till this sweet being slowly dies in its own blood

How can you claim that your programs for protecting wildlife will bear fruit?

Wake up so called Wild life activists (WWF) and reply us.
    • Hi kaarthiik.thota, did you contact the Faroese government and Danish Foreign Ministry as detailed above, and what was their reply?

It's easy to fume at WWF for an apparent lack of action, but what action beyond this have you yourself taken? Have you contacted the WDCS to see how you might be able to assist their efforts?

I'm not saying this isn't an upsetting issue, but if WWF redirect their resources, who will tackle bycatch (an estimated 300,000 whales and dolphins unnecessarily caught and killed each year!!!!) and critical marine habitat protection?

We can't expect just one organisation to save the world, not against such fierce commercial and selfish exploitation. And we can't expect to save the world by proxy - it's up to all of us to work together, directing our energy to positive outcomes, not infighting.

    Ben, Thanks for your reply!
I am just asking what WWF is doing. As I understand WWF should answer to the questions in this forum. Ben, a govt never respond to an individual mail when a big org like wwf cant do anything. I am asking WWF to start a program to save them. And obviously we the indivduals will be a part of it.
I am sure if WWF will initate many indivduals will follw and provide support.
I never meant to fight with in ourself.
And I am really happy to see some people posting there responses on this. I want WWF to educate more people on this.
I tried contacting WDCS, but no luck, please tell me any good source to contact it. I was trying to contact as many as possible. I am in India and i have mailed many times the WWF teams in various issues, but no responses.
I have waited for WWF response for this question from more than 2 months, you can see my posts in this forum, and it was really very hard time for me to see a forum to contact WWF. Many people do not even know about this forum.
But, I get mailers from WWF abt the accessories and fund raisng stuff.
My main intention is to stop cruelty towards nature.

  • Thank you for your concern and for taking the time to write to us about this issue!

There are a significant number of hunts of whales, dolphins and porpoises (collectively known as cetaceans) that take place around the world. The hunt shown in these pictures is the pilot whale hunt which occurs every year in the Faroes. In addition to this hunt, Japan takes thousands of small cetaceans in directed hunts every year, including dolphins, porpoises and small whales such as the Baird's beaked whale. Greenlandalso takes large numbers of narwhals in a hunt that has been classified as unsustainable. All of these hunts occur outside international regulation and control.

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) regulates and controls directed kills of whales, and has maintained an international moratorium on whaling for several decades. However the IWC currently only has the remit to manage whaling of the great whale species. WWF has been working for many years to pressure the IWC to expand its remit to include small whales, dolphins and porpoises, which need the IWC's help just as much as the great whale species do. We released a report at the last IWC meeting highlighting this issue, and urging the IWC to take action. You can find this report at http://assets.panda.org/downloads/sma...

In addition, several of our partners are doing important work to raise awareness of these hunts. See several links below for reports on a number of hunts around the world.

Our partners have also been successfully running campaigns in the countries in which these hunts occur to demonstrate to those who eat cetacean meat the high levels of contaminants such as mercury and PCBs that occur in some of these animals, and the health risk that poses to those humans who eat the meat. See the following link for a global report on this issue by the Environmental Investigation Agency www.eia-international.org/files/repor... as well as a report focusing on Japan(also available in Japanese.)

  • I think there are two ways to take it ...
    1. Making ppl to stop actually this ... which is the best ... is not acceptable that human race is growing such cruel stuff, cannot call them humans ... Then, what is their tradition deeper, ... what are the causes behind, ... any bad story on the back? ... what can be done in this way, then providing appropriate education to those ppl ... well, seems that Denmark is not quite responsible for that ... and blaming those ppl probably doesn't help ... I think they will come worst and worst, just to show off.

    2. HOW CAN ANY ORGANIZATION, MAKE THE DOLPHINS AVOID THAT PLACE OF DEATH FOR THEM. I BELIEVE THERE ARE SOME ULTRASONIC SIGNALS WHICH CAN WORK OUT TO KEEP DOLPHINS FAR AWAY, AT LEAST AT THAT TWO PERIODS IN A YEAR.
    IS A MATTER OF:
    - SUPPORT FROM SOMEONE WHICH KNOWS WELL HOW THE DOLPHINS REACTS AT WHAT KIND OF SIGNALS, AND SPECIFICALLY APPLICABLE TO THAT SPECIE OF DOLPHINS. ACTUALLY WHAT SHOULD BE THE SPECIFICATION OF THE SIGNAL TO KEEP THE DOLPHIN ASIDE (FREQUENCY, MODULATION, WHAT KIND OF MODULATION, POWER, PROPAGATION IN THE SEA WATER).
    - SEA MAP AND LOCATIONS, FROM SOME SAILORS - CAN GIVE THE BEST SOLUTION TO BE APPLIED POSITION, DEEPNESS OF WATER, AND THE RIGHT PLAN,
    - SOME TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT ... WHICH CANNOT BE VERY EXPENSIVE, AN ELECTRONIST CAN WORKOUT THAT ... BUT ... AGREE, NEEDS TIME AND SOME MONEY ...
    - BOARDING ON ONE OR MORE BOATS, ... OF THAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT
    - FINALLY, A SCHEDULE APPLIED TO THE PLAN ... LIKE WHEN AND HOW ... LIKE HOW MANY BOATS? , HOW BIG THE SIGNAL POWER SHOULD BE? ...
    - LEGAL ASPECTS SHOULDN'T BE FORGOTTEN IN ANY ACTION ... PROBABLY EVERYTHING SHOULD BE DONE IN THE INTERNATIONAL WATERS ... OR THE WATER BELONGING TO DENMARK ONLY, THEN NEED FOR DENMARK SUPPORT TOO.

ANOTHER SOLUTION COROLLARY AT THIS, IS TO ATTRACT DOLPHINS BY THE MEANS OF SIGNALS, IN A SAFER PLACE FOR THEM ... (WHICH CAN BE USED BY THE LOCAL PPL TOO ... ACTUALLY I CANNOT IMAGINE HUNDREDS OF DOLPHINS COMING TOGETHER ON THE BEACH JUST TO BE FRIENDLY ... THEY ARE PROBABLY ATTRACTED IN A WAY OR OTHER)

I might be wrong or incomplete in my assertion but, as your guys here, I'm also feeling crazy about this thing ... and just thinking to a quick and efficient solution ...
I think I'm not the only thinking at that ... but can be a solution, if technically is possible ...

    Hi Dan.

Great Idea! to use the technology to keep the dolphins away for those days. At lease if we are able to save 50% at first its a huge sucess.
Educating and pressing Denmark people takes long time. This can be a quicker and efficent solution for now.

Stake please take Dan's input. And let us know if you need any inputs.

to Dan: your ideas are great, please please please info me if there is any development.
i'm a dolphin lover since i was a kid, i see them rarely because i don't live on the coastal line. i just wish i can see them swimming freely with their babies, so my children and my grandchildren and all my future relatives will still be able to see them.

    Hi everybody,
I also received an email with pictures of the horrible slaughter of the dolphins in the Faroe Islands.
There are no words to describe how I feel about this.
    It needs to STOP.
For now I've signed a petition and forwarded it to all my friends.
I contacted WWF asking to do something and how can we help?
And I emailed all the tourist agencies I could find on the internet of the Faroe Islands, sent the pictures and asked the simple question.....
."Why would I want to be a tourist in your country when the people do this?"

If there is something else I could do to help to stop this insanity, please let me know.

  • The email is making its rounds again and hopefully it will never stop. I have been working in IT for over 20 years so I get these emails and more times then not when I do research I find they are not factual. I was very surprised to find this one to be true. As pointed out in previous posts just fax and email them and sign petitions showing your disapproval. I could never understand this kind of tradition regardless of how it defines these young me or their culture. To say this is appauling I believe to be an understatement.

When you get the email or if you have already received it pass it on to everyone so they can fax, email and otherwise disrupt this type of unecessary and barbaric slaughter.

Anyone can contact me if they have other ideas and options to persue this to the fullest extent fap.remote@gmail.com

  • These whales are killed in a very humane whale. Maybe the pictures are pretty shocking due to the blood, but the whales aren't killed brutally. They're spinal nerve is cut so no blood reaches the brain so they get unconcious and die within few seconds. Please visit: whaling.fo
Please conencentrate on the slaughter of pigs, chickens, etc. They're not killed as painlessly as you thought. They live in cages so small that they can't even stand. And killed painfully too. So please reconcider, where the meat comes from when you buy meat in the stores.
    • view 1 more comment
    • Asdad you are as ignorant as those who join in this brutal killing. This meat is not needed, it is considered too contaminated for consumption. Yes much animal farming is appallingly cruel and needs policing but this particular rutualist slaughter is senseless. Our seas and oceans are dying from the imbalance man is creating thanks to this barbaric world wide activity. It pains my soul and made me weep when I saw the evidence so I donated what `I could to Sea Shepherd and I will write letters to the addresses given above which I will then forward to all those I know so they too can send it.
    • asad what do you mean to say? Killing an animal for just prooving that boys became elder? If they want to proove that they became elder ask those guys to fight with Sharks without any wepon in the sea! Or face a crocodile in water or ask tehm to swim in a dangorous eel zone and come back. Its very Inhuman. How can you support the killing? I do not support any kind of killing.
Cruelity towards Pigs and chikens slaughter can be controlled by putting some guidelines. But its totally incoorect to say that this is humane. Its very very bad.

  • Is there really nothing else to be done apart from writing to the above addresses to appeal against such barbaric mutilation and murder? I will of course write anyway but I am just SO SHOCKED by all this. I know there are many issues and this goes on in many areas of the world to too many different creatures. Britain is as bad with it's cruel farming of pigs, chickens etc. How can we turn blind eyes to this insanity? It makes me feel hopeless and wretched.

  • Hi Guys,
Its seems this barbaric thing is reaching people. I am watching from 9 months few people are giving ideas, from few days I see more people responding to this. But sad thing is not even a single person (I mean people from Wild life protection groups) is taking the ideas into account.

Guys, If you any people from Denmark/Forere Islands pleas ask them to change there minds. If you have any contacts post them here.. so all of us try to change the people's mind.

I am tired of mailing WWF and realted organizations. still waiting to get replies

Can anyone understand what the women filming it were sayingor who they are? Were they for or against it? If against, can they be contacted because I'm sure they'll know some people who can be targeted.
The more people get together on this the better.

I am so desperate to help that when I get enough money together I hope to eventually join the crew of Sea Shepherd to work on their ships for a month and then see what can be done to really turn their attention to this carnage.

  • How about bombarding all tourist offices that deal with the place and any sites the islanders themselves have created to advertise their products, hotels, restaurants etc?

For example I just found this email address info@visitfaroeislands.com so will send a fairly explosive opinion to them.

Maybe local people can be found on Facebook to target. They can of course delete everything but at least a real bombardement may start to make them think about their actions.
If they think their tourist trade may be harmed it may start to turn the tide. I bet tourists don't take day trips to watch the slaughter!!!

    Cheers
    • Hi Suzy,

I also emailed the tourists agencies of the Faroe Islands some time ago with the simple question......"Why would I want to be a tourist in your country when the people do this?" with of course the pictures.
I am so shocked that this is happening.
I also contacted WWF and Greenpeace, received emails from them, but not much came of it.
Needless to say I did not get any response from the Faroe Islands tourist agencies.
A friend of mine will put these pictures on her facebook page. It's a good idea to target the locals on facebook.
      This really needs to STOP!!!!!!
    • K.Schook,

  • Well good for you. We will just have to keep chipping away at this and all the other parts of the world where similar atrocities are happening.
Have you checked out Sea Shepherd? They are certainly aware of the Feroe island massacres. I think it was on their site they mentioned a guy who did some undercover filming who eventually had to run for his life managing to hold onto the film.....not sure if he was part of their programme or on an individual quest. It's clearly a dangerous and intimidating thing to be there and openly against these barbarians.

My boyfriend filmed up there in '97 for ITN and he also got run off the area in a very threatening manor though still kept the footage. it was shown on the news but nothing came of it. We can only hope to change this by re-educating and shaming people and screaming at both theirs and our government but that means a very slow fight. Meantime the massacres will continue
keep in touch though.....all grist to the mill so to speak.

    All,

Please lets do something like making a petion. or something, please put forward some idea. I am clueless after seeing video. I could not even see the full video, shame on Mankind. How could the people be so cruel.

Lets all bring force on tourism industry, and the people near to these islands should stop making bussiness with the residents.
No imports no exports ban the goods from Faroe islands.
Only then people will change.. very very inhuman.
