King Juan Carlos - Honorary President of WWF Spain?

King Juan Carlos of Spain enjoys hunting and killing wildlife for pleasure and so-called sport. On his most recent hunting trip he shot and killed an elephant, which is listed as an endangered species on the website of the WWF Spain. Unfortunately, the King is also the Honorary President of the WWF Spain. This simply cannot be right. To have an individual that likes to hunt endangered species hold such a position makes an absolute mockery of the values and aspirations of the WWF. It is also a massive slap in the face to all of its supporters and volunteers who work so hard to protect animals. The King's position is untenable and swift action needs to be taken to strip him of his Honorary Presidency. The WWF must act now to protect its reputaiton and integrity!

  • I agree completely. A few years ago he was shooting bears and wolves in Romania, now it's elephants in Botswana. As a result he had an accident and needed hip replacement surgery, but he still won't get the message because he is too arrogant. Incidentally, his grandson shot himself in the foot (literally) about the same time, messing about with guns in the family tradition. As a WWF member for many years, I am warning you that you will lose my support if you do not strip him of the honorary Presidency of WWF Spain. And don't do it discreetly!

    Hi everyone,
WWF has requested an emergency meeting to convey our profound dismay at recent developments in Spain, "which has caused outrage from our partners and the public against hunting elephants".

In the letter, WWF states that a response is needed to the "tens of thousands of people who have already used a variety of digital platforms to protest and demand that His Majesty the King not continue holding the honorary presidency of WWF-Spain".

The original letter, in Spanish, is available below:

    Hello,

I’m Paula Borquez from Chile and I just read an article about the horrible elephant hunting that the King of Spain made in Botswana. There is a quote from Roland Gramling (spokesman from WWF Germany) that says: “Even if it’s hard to understand for nature’s guardians, WWF considers that trophy hunting it’s good for the preservation of the species and the protection of nature under strict conditions”...How can a speaker for the protection of animals can say, under any circumstances, that hunting is good!!!! My God, if even an institution that should be on the animal side are saying that this is good, and because of the money helps....WE ARE SO SCREWED!! How can we battle dead with more dead!! How can you say to a poacher that if he pays the money, it’s ok to hunt animals!! And for pleasure!!

I have been faithful to WWF for so many years, but now I am so disappointed on you that I will never help anymore, because now I know what are you trying to help, and how. I'm disgusted, there are less and less animal organizations that really care about animals.

    Bye

  • I’m Insulted
King Juan Carlos of Spain was just caught (april 2012) hunting elephants in Africa.

How is it possible that he is an honorary president of the WWF?

This is pure hypocrecy and is not acceptable. I don't care what family he was born into or how much money he has... an elephant hunter can't be part of this foundation, least of all as honorary president.

It challenges your identity and tarnishes your image. If you aren't willing to do anything about it I will no longer support your foundation, for it is not being true to its beliefs.

  • I’m sad
    Dear protectors of the nature,

my name is Isabel and I'm from Spain. First of all, I want to apologize about my English. I would like to tell you that my family has been member of your organization for a long time and I thought we could trust you. Now, I think you should know about our Elephantkiller King and the magnificent Honourable President of WWF Spain being (unfortunately) the same person. Yesterday I was very surprised when I couldn't read any news from WWF or Greenpeace about our sweet Juan Carlos King and, today, I was looking for some answers on the WWF Spain facebook and I read this: "WWF appreciates all the comments received, that we will send to the Royal House.

WWF remains committed to the conservation of elephants, as we have been doing for 50 years, fighting poaching, illegal ivory trade or destruction of habitats, not only in countries like Botswana where the elephant population has now reached more than 130,000 specimens and hunting is regulated, but in other countries in Africa and Asia where populations are threatened."

Very polite, very correct. You should read the answers... Lots of people want to quit WWF because of this. We are really affected and we don't think we can trust WWF anymore if you don't really have the reaction that the elephants deserve. We thought you were just like us, concerned about the nature, able to denounce politics. I feel sad, disapointed and angry with WWF.

I hope you could react in time so that you can win our respect again, beacause we want to trust you and I think
you want us to trust you too.

Thank you very much for your time.

  • Dear Sir/Madam,

I'm writing about a recent issue on WWF-Spain.
As you may know, last week we knew about the king of Spain hunting elephants in Botswana.
Some years before, in 2006, we read about him hunting drunken bears in Russia. Pathetic.

Despite this dreadful behaviour, Juan Carlos I is still the Honorary Chairman at WWF-Spain.
As many spaniards, I think it's about time to fix this regrettable situation. WWF should make a brave decision and dismiss him from that position.

If you don't move quickly, I guess your corporate image in Spain will suffer terrible damage.

    Sincerely yours,

  • The problem is King Juan Carlos of Spain and the conspicuous absense of any reporting or comment by WWF International on his elephant hunting trip to Botswana!
It is absolutely appalling and outrageous that the WWF should have a wildlife hunter as an Honorary President.

Perhaps he is only concerned with wildlife in Spain? Or, perhaps all wildlife with the exception of those that he wishes to kill on a whim to satisfy his blood lust.

This issue will have a significant negative impact on public support for WWF if it not dealt with.

Do the honorable thing and demand his resignation now.

I follow WWF quite often, (I was in Madrid in the event you guys did with Studios A-cero arquitects...) and I think that with everything that just came up about the king of Spain, killing elephants and all that YOU SHOULD NOT have him related to your brand.

As this will cause uncertainty and insecurity within people like me that do follow you.

    Thanks a million.

The acronym 'WWF' is currently being exchanged worldwide by 'WTF' given the news that elephant-killing King Juan Carlos of Spain has been off slaughtering wildlife again. Large, endangered wildlife. How, may I ask, can you implore the world community to boycott ivory and support elephant protection when the honorary president of the Spanish branch of the WWF hunts them for amusement.

Perhaps you should swap forelock-tugging and sycophantic appeasement of royalty with the appointment of high profile individuals that actually behave in accordance with what you are trying to achieve. Otherwise you may find the money the public are prepared to donate starts to wane even more than it is at the moment.

    Dear concerned supporter,
Here is an update on the situation.

First, WWF sent a letter to the Spanish Royal Palace earlier this week to express our dismay and to state that a response is needed to the "tens of thousands of people who have already used a variety of digital platforms to protest and demand that His Majesty the King not continue holding the honorary presidency of WWF-Spain" (please, see post above)

Second, the Executive Council of WWF Spain has agreed unanimously to initiate the necessary processes to modify the section of its bylaws regarding honorary positions in the organization. We are legally bound to follow a set of legal procedures before any decision is made.

Of course we're monitoring the situation very closely, and we'll keep you posted on future developments. Please rest assured that we are listening to all our supporter's concerns and responding as quickly as we can.

Thank you for contacting us, we'll stay in touch!

I received an email asking me to become a monthly donor to the WWF. I read that Juan Carlos," King of Spain" (not my King), shot and killed a protected Afican elephant. He is the Honorary President of the Spanish branch of the WWF. The WWF considers the
African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) to be vulnerable. He has taken trips to Africa with similar purposes, the hunting of elephants and buffalos. Juan Carlos has been involved in hunting scandals before. Six years ago, officials dismissed as ridiculous allegations that he had shot a drunken Russian bear that had been plied with honey and vodka. He shot and killed his brother in an accident when he was a teenager. Does the WWF protect and conserve endangered wild animals so Kings can kill them?

    Dear Sir or Madam:

Having donated to WWF a few weeks back, I have been shocked today when I read in the papers that King Juan Carlos of Spain is the honorary president of WWF Spain.

King Juan Carlos has been hunting all of his life. He has killed animals countless times, even he shot a domestic bear fed honey-laced vodka in 2006. I am sorry to tell you that I will donate my funds to another nature conservation organization.

    Best regards,

    Edward.

I haven't been able to find much detail on the situation of Juan Carlos of Spain being an honorary president and shooting elephants for pleasure. I emailed my local (Australia) branch of WWF on 17 April to find out what the WWF response was but never received a reply. I have made monthly donations to WWF since 2005 - if Juan Carlos isn't removed from his position in the organisation I will cease to donate. The very least you owe your supporters is proper updates on the situation - I should not have to search for them. To be honest I am really disappointed.

    Atentamente
