New Eviromental Laws

The only way each and every individual is going to be involved enviromental projects, is when the government gets involved first. The government should then spread the message to their people as new laws, as far as the enviroment is concerned.

    Dear Melissa
Why not talk to your national WWF office and see if they are currently lobbying your government with regards to conservation issues? If so, you could be a part in encouraging government action!

Ghandi said "We must be the change we want in the world". Work to influence government yes, but also be a shining example of what you are asking for. This will help the world, we don't have to wait for governments or blame governments.

I think Melissa is talking about top-bottom approach, and Ghandi bottom-up
Sometimes I think it is great to meet somewhere in the middle :) Or maybe that everyone should work on its self, and be an example. But also influence the government and cooperate with them, that is how they see the need for their actions :)

It is difficult to legislate good behavior. Tinkering with a system fraught with legal wrangling will be slow and possibly produce unintended consequences. Playing "their game" will barely slow extinction. It must be grass-roots up. Transcend the paradigm, change the goals, seek to add flexibility, make the rules less complicated - not more, open information flows. If we all know - freely, quickly -we will act more humanely. If all the world's humane people and NGOs concentrated on the immediacy and breadth of information-distribution, they might be shocked how many of us show up ... at once, to say STOP! We hold the power ... it is simply getting us to realize it and come together at once. There is no us and them. Our successful future might well be depoliticized.
    • I do not think you realize John Ford that there are people in this world,''wealthy and politicaly powerfull people at that''who would personaly see to it that every creature alive,''including us humans''would become extinct, if it meant doing so would lead to increased financial profit,or the ability to retain capital that has already been aquired. We need to face the sad fact ,that we live in the age of global capitalism and in this global capitalist system, monetary profits are valued above even human life, thus it is doubtfull that any grassroot movement that does not seek the support of government and government enforced law, will be succsessfull towards the preserving of the envioronmet or any aspect of the enviroment, such as endangered species.

Goverments have a lot of responsabilities in enviromentals problems, but people are the ones to make it real. nobody commands me to love the earth, I do it cause it' s my duty, your idea is very good, we have to make it real. I'm happy to know there are persons who still love our planet and all in it. thanks!

action must start on us as a model citizen.

This is so true. I just can't fathom the fact that governments don't prioritize environmental issues, when in fact that the environment around us is what nurtures us. Gosh, making sure that the environment and its inhabitants are at balance is such a clear choice!

It is becoming increasingly clear that many of the laws and regulations which are supposed to protect our natural world, have the effect of protecting capitalism,or if you will, global monopoly capitalism;not our enviroment. All around the world, the IMF and the World bank, along with their international corporate cronies, have overseen the establishent of large nature ''preserves''which are,and will have the effect of promoting increased capitalist development, because of the fact that the native peoples who have lived sustainably for thousands of years whithin what are now preserves, have been barred from hunting, fishing, gathering and making their homes within those preserves.Even as native peoples who have lived sustainably in undeveloped regions for thousands of years are driven from their homes,''and thus given the choice of either dieing on the street or becoming part of the global capitalist system, the global financial lords have, and continue to promote and finance massive capitalist ventures,''including logging and minning operations'' within some of the planets last unspoiled and enviromentaly healthy regions. The proposed 500 plus square mile Peebles mine in southwest Alaska is a prime example of the enviromental havoc that the international capitalists promote on a regular basis, even as they participate in the establishment of so called nature preserves, which in reality serve to preserve capitalist development by further seperating man from nature.
We should also take note of the fact that while susistance hunting , fishing ,gathering and agriculture are under attack by enviromentalists of various schools of thought,as well as development advocates,so called ''sport'' fishing and trophy hunting, is being touted in many regions as a means of stimulating local economies and preserving the enviroment via the free market. We are supposed to accept the slaughter of non-''game'' species and the systematic alteration, even outright destruction of natural ecosystems nessacary for the promotion of sport fishing and hunting as being enviromentaly sound practices, even as we look upon the individuals and cultures who take a sustainable living from the natural world as being wastefull and crude.Right here in the lower 48 states, our government admits to us that the management of our natural ''resources''is carried out in such a manner as to promote the overall wellbeing of our economy;that is our capitalist economy that depends upon, and thrives upon endless growth, and thus endless development. If you do not believe that our govenment views our natural world as being essentialy little more than a prop for endless development, then I suggest you read the mission statements of both our state and federal wildlife management agencies.Take the time to research the polocies adopted by those agencies,as well as those of the US park service, forrest service and other natural ''resource''management agencies, and you will find that more often or not those polocies have originated with,or at the least are endorsed by the international corporations and banking powers, whom of course benifit the most from those polocies.
Now please do not misiterpret me and believe that I am oppossed to all enviromental laws and,the establishment of ceartain types of nature preserves. You should not think either that I am oppossed to managing ceartain aspects of our natural world for economic purposes. The truth of the matter is, I am in support of nature preserves which serve to protect not just the trees and the critters, but mans traditional material, social and spiritual ties to the forrest, the waters and the life forms found within.I am not oppossed to reasonable creel limits, the rationing of scarce or limited resources, the special protection of endangered species, what I am opposed to is polocies that ultimately lead to more people getting dinner from MCdonalds, rather than from functional ecosytems.I am oppossed to the management of nature in such a way as to mold nature to fit the development dependent economy. If any aspect of nature is to be managed, then it should be managed as if nature were the economy;ultimately nature is the economy. For the time being,or untill the majority of humans once again reconigze ''mother nature'' as mother nature,I would be content with managing the economy in such a way as to fit nature.
Well tomorrow I am going to engage in a little civil disobediance that will be both good for the enviroment and put a fine meal on my table.I hear the trout are bitting worms and corn up yonder in the park, so that is where I plan to be after work.Eat your factory produced artifical lures out, Trout Unlimited ! The ways of the fish and the worm are the ways of nature, and that is the way I'm going !

Everyone needs to be aware the ''cap and trade laws''will not significantly reduce carbon emissions,if they reduce those emissions at all.Cap and trade regulations allow the wealthiest of corporations to continue spewing carbon into OUR atmosphere while at the same time inhibiting the ability of less established buisnesses to compete with the big boys. Now,I am no fan of competition for the sake of competition ,but since we live in a capitalist society which demands that we ''little people'' compete with one another for resources and jobs, then it is in our best interest that buisnesses also be forced to compete with one another, for the privalige of doing buisness with us.Now having said this,I am at heart, a people and tree hugging commie who has the good sense to realize that instead of competing with one another for anything,we should be working together for the common cause of survival upon a planet that is fit to survive upon.Let' be honest about this folks, how many of us,''who are not die hard fans of Ryand'' would dare teach our children that greed is good and cooperation is bad ?

Of all the problems we have the worst has got to be the continuing population explosion. Whatever damage we do to the planet, is multiplied by the amount of people needing everything we continue to demand. Over the last couple of hundred years the planets population has exploded and gathers pace every year. The planets resourses just cannot (without damaging the natural world) support the population today let alone 100 years from now. Humans are without doubt the worst animal to have existed. It would be a brave politician to suggest some limit, but for the sake of the world and the human race something MUST be done. Would two children per family be so terrible.
    • I agree, with already so many people on the planet it's almost impossible to stop all the environmental problems the world is facing: global warming, climate change, destruction of natural habitat, pollution... However, we must do whatever it takes to speak up and let everyone know that we care and want to help save our planet.
I was thinking today how some nations insist on banning "abortions". It doesn't make sense to me, abortion is NOT murder. What about teen pregnancies and rape cases? I think it's better for a child not to live at all than live in an unwanted, unloved atmosphere. It should be the family's decision to get an abortion or not.
Also, maybe instead of saying "Every family MUST have maximum two children!", the government can increase the taxes of the people with crowded families and decrease the taxes of the people with less crowded families.

Thank you for writing in to WWF and your thoughts on this issue.
Recognizing the close connections between population issues, health, gender and conservation, WWF is taking a multi-pronged approach at the local, national and international level to build a sustainable balance between people and nature.

I read what is said should be done, but stopping abortion being being illegal and handing out free condoms etc, is going to make no difference at all. Nor is taxing people who have to many children, this leaves one law for the rich and one law for the rest. This is something that can only be tackled by governments with more than the next election on their minds. I may be wrong , but believe the worst offenders are the uneducated, and poor. We must try to educate and give help to third world countries that agree to limit children to two per couple. If we don't act soon it will be too late and biodiversity will die! Soon followed by the human race. Global warming etc will never be beaten while the human race continues multiplying. We sit back and do nothing, surely just looking at the rate we have multiplied over the last one to two hundred years and the extra food needed to keep us all, must help us to understand we cannot do it without continued deforestation,Or land needed by other species. And of course health and medicines are letting more people live and live longer

    • I understand what you mean, you make a great point. :) Though WWF is not an organization I work for, one of the employees may be able to help.
Suggesting that WWF focuses more on the population, maybe more than it focuses on saving endangered species is what I find best.
Trying to decrease the growth of population should be one of its main goals.
You are right about how urgent this is, but I don't think "forcing" or "frightening" is neccessary. The situation itself is scary enough, and people who at least have something between their ears can understand. It's most important for WWF to start 'taking tangible action' as soon as possible to communicate with governments and discuss this issue once again. It can suggest the governments make new laws, just like the ones you mentioned.
I share your concerns, and hope all your helpful ideas will be appreciated and dwelled on. ;)
    • The WWF need great help from government arround the world to help keep the wild life in a very reliable place.
