Tripoli zoo

Animals in the Tripoli zoo are in desperate need of food and services. The war has left them without bare necessities. They should be evacuated at best and an airlift of food at the very least should take place immediately. Is anything being done to help them?

  • Hello Nellis

Thank you for contacting us about cruelty to animals.

The focus of WWF's work is on environmental and species conservation and not on campaign issues related to cruelty towards animals. We suggest you contact organizations which are specifically working on these issues. These include:

International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) - www.ifaw.org
World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) - http://www.wspa.org.au
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - www.aspca.org
    RSPCA (UK) - www.rspca.org.uk
    RSPCA (Australia) - www.rspca.org.au
Animal welfare organizations in Europe - http://www.eurogroupanimalwelfare.org...
As your issue concerns a zoo – you may wish to contact a UK based organization called "Born Free Foundation" http://www.bornfree.org.uk/index.shtml

You could also contact your local WWF office and they may be able to provide more information about other local organizations who may be able to help. You may find the WWF-Mediterranean office maybe able to help you. Their contact details can be found at

  • Miriam this is not about cruelty to animals!!! And this is not a campaign issue regarding that! This is about species conservation of some 40 + animals that are being allowed to be unconserved in nature, they need to be in their natural habitat, not stuck somewhere with all of us in power allowing them to rot away!! I have been beside the WWF for many years and maybe I'm questioning whether anyone here actually cares about conservation of natural animals in their habitat, or if they would prefer that species conservation best be left to; "lets leave em in the cage, and see what happens." Too much work for us to do. What are we conserving then? Nature has left them without help for conservation, we have to help them, its what the WWF claims to stand by..

  • We agree that the situation for animals in captive situations such as zoos often suffer unnecessarily during times of conflict, and indeed often in times of peace! The point my colleague was trying to make was that WWF simply does not have much direct dealings with zoos, as we are not mandated for this area of work. Our expertise lies in developing and implementing conservation programmes at the habitat level.

Should these animals, and others in areas of conflict, be helped? YES! However, WWF does not have the infrastructure in place to answer this call. There are several organisations that focus specifically on animals in captivity, pointed out previously, and we support their efforts in this vital area of work. Similiarly, WWF is referred to by those organisations if they receive questions more about conservation. Each organisation has to work on what they do best and what they are resourced to do. Our donors and membership expect that of us. It is not a matter of turning a blind eye, rather making sure these questions get sent to the people most able to assist.

It is often the case that people think of WWF first when seeking help with any wildlife tragedy. And we are happy to be the first port of call with our supporters, and often assist in redirecting their inquiry so they may find the best resolution.

Unfortunately, this current crisis is in a area in which it is difficult to maintain a consistent presence. However, hopefully one of the organisations listed above will be able to give you some idea of who might be involved in any rescue operations.
