Yahoo mail, only has SSL for login, and not for the whole connection. This is very unsecure for everyone.Gmail already has this. When is the yahoo mail planned to have the full SSL support.

Surprised that there is no full SLL mail connection. Especially after gmail has it as standard. When will it be available as if not then the chances are I'll be dropping the account.

Yahoo now has OPTIONAL SSL support. That means you need to enable it and yahoo mail will load with https. You just need to login, go to your settings page and check the "Use SSL" option and save. More details here -

From my experience, yahoo will ask for your password 2 times once you enable the option. But that's just one time.

There's a Gmail Account Hacking Tool about to be released, which is one reason Google implemented the idea.

Google Mail also has free pop and imap support on virtually every mail reader. Yahoo requires mail plus ($20 a year) and has ZERO imap support.

Yahoo mail and contacts without SSL is a let-down.

It's enough to make me switch email providers.

Actually, I researched more and found that there is another way to obtain Full SSL support. Yahoo already provides Full SSL support via it's IMAP and SMTP servers for free. The servers are as follows:

IMAP server: imap.mail.yahoo.com
SMTP server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com

These servers can be accessed via desktop email clients like Outlook, Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird or mobile email clients on Iphone, Android phones etc. Just make sure that SSL is enabled while configuring the email client. A patch is needed to enable IMAP support in Mozilla Thunderbird and it is available for download via the following link:

I would really like to know if and when Yahoo plans to implement this feature. Their new Beta interface is the best in the freemail biz, but it's 2011, not 1995. SSL is a requirement, and one shouldn't have to pay $20 a year for it when Gmail and Hotmail offer it as a free service.

I don't see any mention of Plus offering this on that page.

I think this a feature that should be added soon. I just had my account commandeered and it sent out spam to all my contacts. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a virus on my machine, but someone grabbing an open yahoo mail session over wireless (ala firesheep). Yahoo should implement SSL, as it can save them the money and hassle of dealing with some of these zombie spamming accounts.

"Surprised" indeed to partially quote a previous poster. Goodness, we even use Yahoo Small Business account. Its "Shameful" in this day, for "YAHOO" ( once a household name for a lot of things internet ) to not have this functionality. So pretty please with anti-phishing cherry on top. Get what is needed first. Who cried that we didn't have the new UI.

Yahoo has it shaded out so it's not selectable like it is when you set up Gmail.

Only two of my yahoo email accounts have the option to 'turn on SSL'. Implementation of that feature is not universal as none of my other contacts have that option on any of their yahoo email accounts.

I don't have the option to enable "Turn on SSL", but I can change the http to https in the address bar after loading mail and it works. The only issue with doing that is it breaks some of the applications.

I just checked and another of my yahoo accounts now has that feature. I just turned it on. I would suggest just checking whenever you think of it.

I enabled the SSL feature and now every time I go to Yahoo Mail, I frequently get stuck in a loop where it keeps asking me to login over and over again. It also frequently temporarily locks my account so I can't get to mail.

When I get it and try and turn it off, it dumps me out. :(

I managed to turn it off using Internet Explorer 8. Firefox does not like the new mode at all because Yahoo mixes http and https on the page which Firefox disallows.
