My email address has been hijacked!

  • Question
  • Updated 2 years ago
Someone has hijacked my email address and sent out an email to every contact in my contacts list. I got a bounce back email that showed all the contacts who were sent the email. how can I stop this from happening? Some people are receiving random emails from me that I didn't send.

It happened to me too. It's really easy to hijack your email. Just need DOB and Zip Code. I wrote asking them to strip password recovery. I got a completely worthless reply from their customer care:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Yahoo! Customer Care.

I appreciate the opportunity to address your report regarding Account
Security. My goal is to provide you the best service possible,
especially when it comes to safeguarding your account. I've sent you
this auto-generated response as confirmation that my team has received
your report and also to provide you with information dealing with the
most common Account Security questions.

INVALID PASSWORD:
If you are unable to login to your Yahoo! account due to an invalid
password error please visit:

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/edit...

CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD:
If the above information did not assist you, please attempt to request a
new password. Remember that our team may not reset your password or
remind you of your current password.

To change your password:

1. Sign in to your Yahoo! account using your current password by
signing in on any of Yahoo!'s personalized services (such as My Yahoo!,
Yahoo! Mail, etc.)

2. At the top of the page, click on either your user name or name that
appears in bold or the "My Account" link

3. Re-enter your current password to continue

4. Click on the "Change Password" link in your Account Information page

5. In the space next to "Current Password," enter your current password
or the new one we issued to you

6. In the space next to "New Password," enter a new password of your
choice. Passwords are case-sensitive (meaning that PASSWORD, PaSsWoRd
and password are not equivalent), so be sure to take this into account
when entering your new password.
It is recommended your new password not contain any part of your old
one, for security reasons.

7. In the space next to "Confirm New Password," confirm your new
password by typing it again

8. Click the "Save" button to put your new password into effect

STILL HAVING TROUBLE?

If you have followed the directions above, and are still unable to
obtain a new password for your account or feel that your account may
have been compromised, please reply to this email with the following
information you supplied during your Yahoo! registration.

Please know that we do have access to original account information and
that we will be unable to provide login or other assistance without
completely verifying your account.

1) Horse. Barn. Door. Get good antivirus, antispyware and firewall software and keep them up to date.

2) Stealth your answers. What was your Mom's Maiden Name? Chartreuse? What is your favorite color? Smith. Think, people, think.

Do you have access to your account -- I don't? Yahoo themselves are no help as all the settings have been altered by the hijacker and I am being asked to prove the account is mine.

Yahoo's Account Security at 866-562-7219 can help, for there's data they have which a hacker can never change that can be used for recovery.

I currently have this problem and have not been able to get Yahoo customer service to help. When ever I send an email the hijacker has the reply set up to go to a fake account that looks just like my email account with one extra letter.

it is a hassle to get anyone from yahoo.com to talk to me. My email has been hijacked and the password changed but nothing I've read in the maze of yahoo customer care has made any sense or has assisted me so far. All I want is my god damn email back is that too much to ask? all my business contacts has it. Can someone cut to the chase and get me a KISS direction. I have the same email accessing my FB a/c yet I cannot read my own yahoo emails wtf

First tell me which email service provider you use. Suppose you are using ymail or gmail then according to me try to change the password of your account. It's the best way to recover the account but if your account is not recovered then contact with your email provider's customer care.

Another solution is that you will create a new email account with secure webmail provider that provides email security filter and the foolproof security mechanism of your data. These securities are really helpful for receiving and sending emails without virus. I know one website that provides such securities and the name is email.biz. I am confident if you will use this website, your account will never hacked or compromized and you will not get any spam email in your Inbox.
